School Committee gets updates on after school clubs and from the Food Pantry (video)

The Franklin School Committee met as scheduled on Tuesday, October 14 in Council Chambers with all 7 members present and participating.

Franklin TV video is available for replay -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gEwf-tNffMs

Quick recap:
  • FHS club fair held, 35 clubs presented, looking to finalize what's active with signups and payments to confirm membership. If not all to operate there are additional proposals being developed that could be implemented in lieu of some that didn't make it. High school has a late bus confirmed, awaiting word from bus company on one for the middle school
  • Middle school working on confirming advisors and also setting survey to determine student club interest. Hopeful of get the matching done during November
  • Franklin Food Pantry presentation by Laura Doherty and Tina Powderly. Much work to create awareness, address stigma, expand available of food for those who need it. Lots of coordination, collaboration underway with School District, more to come. Empty Bowls will continue, looking also to expand and offer bowl workshop outside of the high school to community. Looking into why middle school student who were part of the back pack program don't continue with it into high school
  • Good of the order raised the following items
    • Consideration of removing restriction on citizen comment about something on the agenda, esp. now as it is at the end of the meeting; could be an opportunity to gain immediate feedback on something discussed during the meeting
    • A public education slot to share info on current topics, to help address the misinformation still bantered about in the social media channels
    • Do something to help the new Town Council get up to speed quickly, perhaps to include a tour of the schools, many don't seem aware of the details of daily operations
  • entered into Executive Session not to return to open meeting

"Welcome to our work on progress

Looking at this reminds me how far we've come in just a few short weeks. So much thought has gone into this reorganization and the library is no exception. We will have a fully functional library - one exclusively for middle schoolers! - before you know it (or, you know, November-ish.)

Meet Me in the Middle: Franklin Middle School Sees Summer Reading Success

When more than 1,000 students walked into Franklin Middle School this September, they already shared something in common: the books they read over the summer.

The summer reading program, a long-standing requirement in Franklin Public Schools, calls on students to read at least two books over the break to support both academic growth and social-emotional development.

This year, as Franklin Middle School welcomed students into a newly reorganized building, the leadership team sought to take the program a step further.

"Our goal was simple: to ensure that every Franklin Middle School student entered the year not only as a reader, but also with a shared story that could spark conversations, build community, and ease the transition into a brand-new school," said Erin O'Leary, Reading Specialist at Franklin Middle School.

Six titles were selected for the program, each centered on a middle school-aged character navigating challenges familiar to students. They were: "Twerp" by Mark M. Goldblatt; "The Tenth Mistake of Hank Hooperman" by Gennifer Choldenko; "Counting by 7s" by Holly Goldberg Sloan; "Other Words for Home" by Jasmine Warga; "Fast Break" by Mike Lupica; and "Bye Forever, I Guess" by Jodi Meadows.

The effort was met with strong participation: 75 percent of students completed the required reading, with some choosing to read multiple books. When the school year began, teachers set aside time for students to gather by book title and share reflections with classmates.

Students reported that the program made reading more enjoyable and also provided a way for them to bond with their peers.

"Having a list made it easier to choose," one student shared.

Another said, "I picked it because my friend was reading it and we wanted to read the same thing."

Through these shared stories, Franklin Middle School's summer reading program helped prevent summer learning loss while also building community among students.

"This experience shows the power of books to unite students," said Superintendent Lucas Gugiere. "It gave our students common ground to start conversations, build friendships, and feel at home in their new school."

BLAST is back !!

BLAST is back !!
BLAST is back !!
#BLAST is back!!!

Eight years ago @caleighsage and I met with the goal of trying to get the @franklinpubliclibrary into the school system.

We talked, we planned, we fought, we readjusted, and we succeeded.

In the years that followed, BLAST became part of our identity. It spread to five other schools in the district, some charter schools, and even some neighboring towns.

Today was the first time we had BLAST with everyone under one roof at #FranklinMiddleSchool It felt momentous - it was something to celebrate

Cheers to BLAST Wednesdays! (And if your student needs a public library card, have them see me. )
