Strawberry Stroll - June 14, 2019
“The Strawberry Stroll is our opportunity to invite people to come together downtown and have fun experiencing the local businesses throughout our community that are unique to this area,” said Scott Martin, president of the Franklin Downtown Partnership and event chairperson. “The mix of activities, crafters and entertainment we have for this year’s festival will make this community event special for all ages, while showcasing what shopping and dining downtown offers.”

For the first time, the FDP is inviting residents to wear straw hats to the Stroll to honor Franklin’s straw hat manufacturing history!

For the second year in a row, Dean Bank has organized Dancing on Dean, a fun dance party featuring two local bands: Matt Zajac and The Northeast Groove.

Franklin Historical Museum: EXPLORING STONE WALLS - Jun 9

Our Second Sunday Speaker Series continues with EXPLORING STONE WALLS. Robert M. Thorson, Professor of Geology at the University of Connecticut, will present a program of images, stories, and readings based on his three books on New England's fieldstone walls, the region's signature landform. After reviewing their deep history, cultural geography, and dryland ecology, he will focus on the clues you can use to interpret your own favorite walls. He will conclude with a message from Henry D. Thoreau for reverencing stone.
Robert M. Thorson

Copies of Thorson's books on stone walls and Thoreau will be available for purchase and signing as a fund-raiser for the museum. Thorson, a Midwestern native turned western geologist turned eastern academic, is coordinator of the Stone Wall Initiative. Recently he has become a book reviewer for the journal Environmental History, the Wall Street Journal and Orion. This promises to be a very interesting and educational talk. Join us at 1:10 PM, Sunday, June 9. The Second Sunday Speaker Series is sponsored by the Friends of the Franklin Historical Museum.

On Friday, June 14 the museum is happy to participate in the annual Strawberry Stroll. We will open our special Summer exhibit, Victorian Secrets. Bloomers, chemise, corset covers, camisoles, petticoats, hoop skirts and more. It took an awful lot of layers to properly dress a fashionable Victorian lady. View garments from the museum's collection carefully prepared and beautifully displayed. The special Friday night opening coincides with the Downtown Partnership's annual Strawberry Stroll. Enjoy refreshments on the front porch and live music by local entertainer, Kai Olsson.

Now available for sale in the museum gift shop, Franklin collectibles by the Cat's Meow. Three styles are presently available for $18 each: The Red Brick School, The Franklin Library and the Downtown Train Station. They are great gift ideas for anyone who loves Franklin's landmarks. Come in and get them while they last. Proceeds benefit the Friends of the Franklin Historical Museum.

The museum has resumed our summer hours, Thursday evenings 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM, Saturday mornings 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM and Sunday afternoons 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM.

We are wheelchair accessible, admission is always free, and donations are always welcome. Come in and find your history!

Great turnout for the Strawberry Stroll (photo essay)

Friday night was the largest crowd I have ever seen for a downtown event. The weather threatened and held off to provide opportunity for lots of families to make the walk to and around downtown.

I stopped at the Historical Museum first. Heard there was a waiting line to get in when it opened at 4. The bridal gowns are on display through August so if you haven't yet been, go.

Bridal Gown Exhibit opens today at Franklin Historical Museum

The Franklin Historical Museum will open its annual Bridal Gown Exhibit in coordination with this year’s Downtown Partnership’s Strawberry Stroll on Friday, June 8th. The museum will open early, at 4:00 PM for this special event.

Bridal Gown Exhibit opens today
Bridal Gown Exhibit opens today
This year’s exhibit will focus on Franklin brides and their vintage mid-century gowns from our collection. The display will include Emma Velluti’s famous Parachute Dress, a one of a kind original creation of a wartime gown locally designed and hand made from a silk Japanese parachute sent home by her groom, Edward Rabioli, in 1946. The train on this dress is so long, the dress needs a room of its own to be displayed.

Also included is the beautiful preserved gown worn by Franklin’s own Stella Jeon. Stella’s daughter donated the dress, still boxed in its preserved state, to the museum after her death. The gown had been professionally preserved, as many gowns were in those days. When the carefully wrapped and sealed box was opened, it was the first time anyone had seen the dress in over 60 years and the first time Stella’s daughter had seen it other than in photographs. The dress along with many mementos from Stella and Nick’s wedding day will be showcased together for this display.

The exhibit includes photographs, newspaper clippings, and stories of the brides, their grooms and their special day.

At least a dozen beautiful vintage gowns will be on display in the exhibit that runs through the summer from Friday June 8th through Sunday August 26th.

Two special presentations will take place in conjunction with exhibit. Why do brides wear white? Does a slice of wedding cake under your pillow bring good luck? Learn all about wedding traditions, superstitions and their origins in Something Borrowed, Something Blue on Sunday July 8th.

And on Sunday August 12 Maureen Taylor, the Photo Detective returns to share clues in how to identify people in family photos. She’ll focus her talk on wedding photos, styles and fashion hints. The Photo Detective’s presentation is sponsored by the Friends of the Franklin Historical Museum. Both presentations begin at 1:15.

The Franklin Historical Museum is located at 80 West Central Street, is wheelchair accessible and is always free.

“Who doesn’t love strawberry shortcake?”

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:

"The town has deemed the strawberry shortcake a staple of summer, and in 2002 Franklin made it a point to celebrate the fruity dessert with a Strawberry Stroll.
Sixteen years later, the stroll will shut down the roads on half of downtown and down Dean Street where more than 100 vendors and two live music performances on Friday evening from 5 to 8 p.m. will bring the spirit of summer to Franklin.
This will be the first time the event is held on a Friday. The intention is to get families to spend time in local stores and restaurants throughout the night.
It’s easy to say that there are more than a few residents that mark the event on their calendars, said chairman of the Downtown Partnership, Lisa Piana."

In the News: Strawberry Festival Thursday, woman driver under the influence

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:

"The Franklin Downtown Partnership believes its next events - this week’s Strawberry Stroll and October’s Harvest Festival - could be among the biggest in its history.
Partnership Executive Director Lisa Piana said Monday that the 15th annual Strawberry Stroll (4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday) has seen record interest.
“We have over 70 booths; we typically have around 20,” she said. “It kind of caught us by surprise, but it’s a great surprise.”
Piana attributed the increase to a number of factors, including the end of the downtown streetscape project, new business in town and an enhanced interest in downtown. The new booths, she said, will be manned by local crafters, area schools and the local senior center."

"Police on Saturday arrested a Franklin woman who they say was driving under the influence of drugs with 5-year-old child in the car on Interstate 495.
Hopkinton Police arrested Angela Boucher, 40, on Saturday at noon.
Police received a 911 call from a concerned driver, prosecutor Kristen Hughes said at Boucher’s Framingham District Court arraignment on Monday.
“A civilian reported the car was driving erratically,” said Hughes. “The driver appeared to have fallen asleep behind the wheel of the car. When she awoke, she was groggy and continued driving.”

Bridal Gown Display opens at the Franklin Historical Museum - June 8

The Franklin Historical Museum opens its popular Bridal Gown Exhibit on Thursday evening June 8. Doors open at 4:00 for this special event.

Dresses dating from 1893 through the 1950s will be on display through the summer months. This is always one of our most popular exhibits, and with the time it takes to get all of the gowns out, pressed, dressed, researched and displayed, we thought we’d give everyone the opportunity to enjoy it all summer long.

Two dresses of note will be in the exhibit again this year. The parachute dress, made from the silk of a Japanese parachute, worn by a young Franklin woman, as she married back in 1946, after the end of World War II. There is a beautiful story that goes along with the acquisition of the parachute and the making of the dress. Come in and learn all about it.

Our oldest gown is from 1893. It is unique in that it too was made by the bride and includes a bodice made with whale bone. The fabric is very delicate at this point, but the dress is really something to see. We have a photograph of the bride from nearly 125 years ago.

We also have a beautiful 1950’s gown from Priscilla of Boston. Trimmed in delicate blue flowers, this gown is a favorite at the museum. And we’re very proud to have on display again this year the gown worn by Franklin’s own Stella Jeon. The lovely gown, gloves, hat and veil had been preserved for nearly 60 years before being opened and presented to the museum as Stella wished. Photographs and keepsakes from her wedding are also on display.

Over 100 volunteer hours have gone into the preparation of this exhibit and we’re thrilled to have it open through the summer. We will have two guest speakers during the exhibit. Maureen Taylor, the Photo Detective will give a presentation and slide show on the History of the Wedding Dress, Sunday June 18th at 1:15PM. And Karen Antonowicz will give a presentation on Bridal Fashions on Saturday July 29th at 10:30AM

The opening of the exhibit is in conjunction with the Franklin Downtown Partnership Strawberry Stroll. There will be lots to see, do and enjoy throughout the downtown area. The museum will also have an exhibit of gorgeous classic cars displayed out front, courtesy of the Red Devils Car Club. Join us for all the fun.

“We are very excited to close Main Street for the first time for the Strawberry Stroll, and we’re bringing in more booths, more music and entertainment, and making more room to enjoy the strawberry shortcakes. Dean Bank’s staff is serving up the signature Strawberry Shortcakes under the tents in front of the bank, layering more than 800 shortcakes with nearly 200 quarts of berries, sliced and sugared by Dean College, and using dozens of cans of Garelick Farms whipped cream to top off the desserts.

“Dean Bank employees always enjoy serving the shortcakes and we look forward to this event every year,” says co-organizer Jennifer Hurst. “This Stroll is a fun way to meet our customers and their families while giving back to our community. Hopefully we’ll see some nice spring weather to bring out the crowds.”
