This session shares the Franklin, MA School Committee meeting held on Tuesday, March 21, 2023. The meeting was conducted in the Council Chambers with all seven members present.

School Committee Chair Denise Spencer opens the meeting at 7:02 PM.

Key items on the agenda

  • Recognition of several FHS students

  • Superintendent's recommended budget for FY 2024

The show notes contain a link to the full agenda and to my notes & photos captured via Twitter during the meeting.

The Committee entered Executive Session on a negotiation discussion and did return to public meeting. I did not capture that portion of the meeting.

The recording runs about three hours, thirty four minutes, so let’s listen to the Franklin School Committee on March 21, 2023.

I split the audio into two sections

  • #963 - Part 1 - covers the opening of meeting, FHS student recognitions, Parmenter presentation (less the musical audio segment - approx 5 minutes), and then the closing of the meeting after the budget presentation (net of 1 hour and 25 minutes)

Franklin.TV: Winning Ways - All about our high school kids, as courageous leaders

by Pete Fasciano, Executive Director 02/12/2023

The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association, MIAA and the MSAA, Massachusetts School Administrators Association team up with Franklin TV to produce a new TV series highlighting excellent student athletes across the state. The series will be available through local public access channels.

Who are these dedicated student leaders of tomorrow? Peabody’s Penny Spack and Pentucket’s Henry Brien are both excellent examples.

Penny Spack is a senior at Peabody High School. She has a 4.07 GPA and is ranked 6th out of 403 students. Her intended major in college is Math and Neuroscience. She is currently on the Mayor's Leadership Council and taking six Advanced Placement classes: Literature, Physics, Economics, Calculus, European History, and Spanish. She received AP Scholar with Distinction in both 2022 and 2021 as well received Exceeding Expectations in Math and English on the MCAS in 2021.

Jay Horrigan and Pete Royce, Penelope Spack & Executive Director Bob Baldwin. They discuss Penelope’s selection as MIAA’s Student Athlete of the month.
Jay Horrigan and Pete Royce, Penelope Spack, Executive Director Bob Baldwin. They discuss Penelope’s selection as MIAA’s Student Athlete of the month.

Penny is a force in the classroom and in athletics. She is a three-sport captain in Ice Hockey, Soccer, and Softball with All Star honors in two of the three. She is currently tied as the leading scorer on the Peabody/Lynnfield/North Reading girls hockey team with 13 points (9 goals, 4 assists). In total, she has points in 12 out of 14 games. This is an impressive feat given she is a defenseman and the overall depth we have in our top ten ranked program. The Boston Herald named her a Defensive Player to Watch for the 2022-2023 season and was selected as a Boston Globe Player of the Week on January 17, 2023.

Henry Brien is an outstanding student at Pentucket Regional High School. He is currently taking the following courses: AP Biology, AP Statistics, Honors Pre- Calculus, Honors World History, Honors World Literature and Composition. Henry is a High Honors student enrolled in arguably the most difficult courses offered at Pentucket, and earned a 4.3 GPA for the 2nd quarter. His term GPA for the 1st quarter (taking the same courses) was a 4.6.

Jay Horrigan and Pete Royce, Henry Brien, Executive Director Bob Baldwin. They discuss Henry’s selection as MIAA’s Student Athlete of the month.

Henry has a remarkable athletic career at Pentucket. His accomplishments as part of the swimming co-op with Triton High School are incredible. He is a multi-year captain and has been named the Cape Ann League Male Swimmer of the Year for 2 consecutive years (2021 & 2022) and, no doubt, will be a favorite to win the award again this season. He holds school records in two individual events (100 yd. Butterfly 54.53 & 50 yd. Freestyle 22. 71) and in all three relays. Henry placed 10th in Freestyle, and 12th in Butterfly at the State meet last winter and should be among the Top 10 this winter. Henry was also named to the Boston Herald All- Scholastic team last winter.

Both Penny and Henry are very dedicated to serving their communities as well. Penny Spack and Henry Brien; two of our future courageous leaders.
Look for Winning Ways with MIAA where every student has an inspiring story.

Thanks for listening to 102.9 wfpr●fm.
And – as always – thanks for watching.

Franklin High School Theatre Company performs "LORD OF THE FLIES" - Mar 3 & Mar 17

Franklin High School Theatre Company performs LORD OF THE FLIES

William Golding's LORD OF THE FLIES adapted for the stage by Nigel Williams

Evacuated from a war-torn world and marooned on a tropical island when their plane crashes, a group of pre-adolescent boys find themselves battling for survival with no adults to help them.

At first, the fair-minded and mild-mannered Ralph seems a natural leader, but as vestiges of civilization fall away, the more aggressive Jack takes control. Jack organizes the boys into a tribe of hunters, searching for pigs to kill and eat and, more alarmingly, watching for the Beast - a malevolent force that the boys believe is stalking the island.

Gradually the frightened youngsters slip from civilized behavior into red-blooded savagery. They battle with inner demons and external fears, with the weakest and most vulnerable at the highest risk. Ultimately, driven by a primitive blood-lust, childish “games” lead to tragic consequences and Golding’s timeless fable exposes the Beast that is in us all and debunks the myth of childhood innocence.

Required reading for most secondary school pupils and one of the greatest novels of the twentieth century, this adaptation of Lord of the Flies by Nigel Williams stays true to Golding’s original novel and is a compelling piece of theatre.

Performed by a stellar cast from the FHSTC with a required 40-minute cut for the METG Drama Festival, you do not want to miss this powerful production.

Tri-County RVTHS Students’ Art Brings Life to New ThermoFisher Lab

ThermoFisher Scientific recently opened a 290,000 square foot manufacturing facility in Plainville, MA. The new facility will be used for manufacturing life-saving gene therapy products that will impact patients all over the world. In order to decorate the Quality Control (QC) testing hallway, ThermoFisher created a SmART Contest open to students ages 13-18 and our students answered the call.

Science themed art work created by contest winner Sinead Bergeron of Medway and runner-ups Catriona Keefe of Wrentham, Morgan Fleury of North Attleboro, and Alexander Vasilyev of Walpole line the QC Hallway and have also been utilized as decals to add color throughout the lab. The students were tasked with creating either computer generated graphics or hand-drawn images and explaining how the artwork displays “science” to them. “You have some amazingly talented students!” commented Marcia Goff, Director of External Communications for Pharma Services at Thermo Fisher Scientific.

The students and their guardians were invited to the ribbon cutting ceremony in August to celebrate the official opening of the new facility. Attendance at the ribbon cutting included: former Gov. Charlie Baker, Attleboro area Congressman Jake Auchincloss, Senator Becca Rausch, and State Representative Shawn Dooley. During the ceremony the four Tri-County students were honored for their works of art which reflect the company’s research efforts.

“Our students utilized the skills they have gained from Graphic Communications to clearly portray their idea of ‘science.’ It is interesting to see the range of ideas that were born for the open-ended contest,” said Linda Thompson, Graphic Communications instructor.

The state-of-the-art site was purpose-built for large-scale manufacturing. It will offer a flexible and scalable configuration of laboratory and production suites co-located with adjacent warehousing and office space.

“All 16 of the Career Majors offered at Tri-County have a foundation in STEAM education. The incorporation of critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving helps prepare our students to be innovators and combine left and right brain thinking. It is an honor to have our students’ artwork hanging in the halls of a state-of-the-art facility for a worldwide leader in the pharmaceutical industry,” said Dr. Karen Maguire, Superintendent/Director, Tri-County RVTHS.

Pantherbook: Student Spotlight - The Tyler Morrill Story

Ryan Martin has a great profile of Tyler Morrill:

"You’re in the championship. With the gold medal on the line, the score is tied. As the clock winds down the few seconds it has left, your teammate zips a pass in your direction. You nail the shot as the buzzer sounds, sending everyone into a frenzy: You are a champion.

The narrative has been dreamed of and practiced by countless kids on turf fields, ice rinks, and courts around the world. For Franklin’s Tyler Morrill, the moment came to fruition last June as he was a part of the Franklin Unified Basketball Team. Morrill’s buzzer-beater in the Special Olympics final crowned Franklin the Gold medalists.

“I was so confident I was going to make that shot!” Morrill said, grinning."
