Via HockomockSports.com and Twitter, we share the results of the fall sports competition for Franklin High School on Friday, January 13, 2023. We also provide the link to the full set of Hockomock League results below.

Boys Basketball = Franklin, 72 @ North Attleboro, 59 – Final
– Locked in a one-point game just over a minute into the fourth quarter, Franklin ran away with a win behind a strong final six minutes. North Attleboro sophomore Jonnie Obuchkowski scored a layup with 6:20 to play, bringing the Rocketeers within a point at 55-54 but Franklin senior Justin Allen (10 points) answered with a deep three and the Panthers outscored the hosts 14-5 the rest of the way. Bradley Herndon, who scored a career-high 20 points, hit a free throw and scored off an offensive rebound and Sean O’Leary converted a putback as the Panthers pushed the lead to 63-54 with 4:43 to play. Franklin forced a pair of turnovers, including a steal from Allen, that both led to transition layups for Herndon to help pull away. O’Leary carried Franklin through the first three quarters, finishing with a game-high 28 points. North Attleboro had a balanced scoring attack, led by senior Givany Carney with 13 points. Obuchowski finished with 11 points while sophomore Chase Frisoli added 10 points.

Girls Basketball = North Attleboro, 17 @ Franklin, 64 – Final
– Franklin’s defensive pressure shut down North to secure a win that keeps the Panthers within one of league leader Attleboro. The Panthers held the Rocketeers to six points in the first quarter, 15 for the half, and then clamped down even further after the break. North was held to a single basket in the second half, a fourth quarter bucket for Maryellen Charette. After doubling up the Rocketeers in the first half, 30-15, a 24-0 third quarter broke the game wide open. Katie Peterson led 11 Franklin scorers with 11 points. Chloe Fales and Bridget Leo each added nine points and Lizzie Newman chipped in with eight. Sam Faria and Katie Corsetti were North’s top scorers with six points apiece.

MA State News Roundup: MLK monument; Wu leaves Twitter; cannabis pricing plummets

(1) Today "The Embrace" is scheduled to be unveiled on the Boston Common. Good timing for the Martin Luther King Jr holiday weekend. This will be a new excuse for a day trip into Boston on a good weather day.

Artist Hank Willis Thomas, who conceived "The Embrace," is seen in his studio in Brooklyn, N.Y. JENNIFER S. ALTMAN

(2) CommonWealth Magazine runs a headline "Citing increasingly toxic climate, Michelle Wu turns away from Twitter"

A sad state of affairs for anyone using social media tools these days. You can read the full article here -> https://commonwealthmagazine.org/politics/citing-increasingly-toxic-climate-michelle-wu-turns-away-from-twitter/

(3) Common Wealth Magazine also provides some insights into the cannabis market. Why does this matter to Franklin? Given the change in the host community agreements, the Town of Franklin is still schedule to get a percentage of the revenues from cannabis sales and we have both growth facilities as well as retails facilities. With the budget cycle starting, these changes will perhaps show up in a lesser amount anticipated on the revenue sheet.

"ON A RECENT DAY, a Brockton customer looking for some marijuana could have bought one-eighth of an ounce of LA Kush Cake flower for just $20 at Commonwealth Alternative Care. Nearby, Legal Greens was advertising one-eighth of an ounce of Jet Fuel flower for $25, according to the marijuana marketing website Leafly.

The prices are way down from the $50 or $60 that a decent strain of marijuana was going for just two years ago. That’s good news for consumers tired of paying some of the highest prices for marijuana in the nation, but it’s bad news for the state’s legal marijuana industry. Just four years after cannabis shops opened, the price decline is destabilizing the industry and threatening to force companies out of business. Policy makers are being urged to consider radical action, including placing a moratorium on the granting of new cultivation licenses."

About a minute later Anthony Lampasona slides it across the crease to Ben Paterson for the shot, the rebound finds Dan Daley's stick in front and he puts it home. Franklin up 2 goals early. Vinnie Pasquarosa and Tommy Balducci would have some nice shots, but nothing found the back of the net. E. Greenwich found the net late in the first to make it 2-1 but the rest of the period was uneventful. Jack O'Connor was between the pipe and saw 4 shots in the first period.

2nd period Recap:

Logan Marchand follows the deflection and takes it on the breakaway to beat the goalie making it 4-1 Franklin. Forwards Mike Gates, Zach Langevin, Pat Daley had some strong shifts presenting some good opportunities. While Liam O'Rielly, Carmine Iannuzzi and Aidan Kuykendall played strong defense that would contribute to another scoreless period for E. Greenwich. As we were just about to close the period Ben Paterson steals a puck and freezes the goalie and snaps it top shelf for the goal making it 5-1 at the end of 2 periods. The FHS boys hockey team had a game situation scrimmage with Braintree with the results as follows:

Scrimmage Results: Franklin 4 Braintree 2
1st Period Recap:
Off the drop of the puck the boys came out firing, up tempo and pushing the puck. Ben Jarosz, Sicchio & Dylan McEvoy had lots of chances to put one home, but the first goal of the game comes at 13:27 into the 1st off low blocker high slot shot by Logan Marchand that's then tipped by Ben Paterson to Anthony Lampasona who buries it. Second goal comes at 9:45 after Braintree dumps it into the zone and Aidan Kuykendall immediately snaps it up the boards past a Braintree defender to Ben Paterson who slides it to Dan Daley who's streaking down the right side of the ice for a 2 on 1, Dan Daley slides the puck over to Anthony Lampasona who punches the ticket to make it 2-0 Franklin. With 4:24 to go in the first Colby Wagner fends of a big breakaway but Braintree would find the net a minute later off a turn over inside the defensive zone. The boys finished off the period on the penalty kill allowing 2 shots and blocking 4. Strong first period by first year defenseman Vinnie Pasquarosa, returner Tommy Balducci who was a forecheck machine and Colby Wagner who was solid in net seeing 13 shots.
2nd Period Recap:
Quiet 2nd period until about 7:38 left in the period when Ben Paterson wins an offensive zone faceoff to Anthony Lampasona who slides it to the weakside defenseman Aidan Kuykendall. Aidan snaps a low wrister off the goalie's pad that finds its way to Dan Daley's stick who snipes it putting Franklin up 3-1. Period would end at 3-1 Franklin; Colby Wagner stops another 13 shots for the donut on the period and that will end his night. Returner Liam O'Rielly has another solid period and newcomers Mike Gates, Zach Langevin, Carter Balducci, Jack Wernig & Rhys Greenwood all working hard & playing strong. Couple in some good shifts from Carmine Iannuzzi and Lucas Sheehan that rounds out the period. Solid overall performance for the period but not as good as the first.
3rd Period Recap:
Starting the 3" Jake Torraco gets the call in the pipes to take the boy's home. The period is uneventful lots of back and forth until 6:08 left in the game Franklin takes a tough penalty and in the same transition Braintree puts one home to make it 3-2. Franklin will spend 5 of the last 6 minutes serving the major. Jake Torraco does a great job weathering the storm while Logan Marchand, Liam O'Rielly, Ben Jarosz and Ryan Sicchio go into lockdown mode. With 2:05 to go in the game and off a relentless forecheck by Dylan McEvoy and Tommy Balducci, they cause a turnover at mid ice and Tommy Balducci is off to the races putting it away making it 4-2 Franklin - FINAL!!!

Solid night by the team! Great to see lots of puck distribution, team play & chemistry. Tons of hustle and of course some things to workon but we are onterra forma and no question season will be exciting!!

Voting #YESon4 is a vote for safer roads by allowing qualified drivers, no matter their immigration status, to pass a road test, buy insurance, obtain a license, and legally drive in Massachusetts.

Everyone benefits when all drivers are given the tools to drive safely.

The commonsense #WFMA law behind #YESon4 passed with resounding support from law enforcement, labor unions, immigrant rights groups, and the State Legislature.

But now that victory's at risk.

An opposition group that has been using fear tactics and spreading disinformation has qualified for the November ballot with the goal of overturning the #WFMA.

We can't let that happen.

Voting #YESon4 ensures that immigrants, no matter their status, can legally make essential trips like dropping their children off at school and getting to work, medical appointments, or the grocery store.

Voting #YESon4 will ensure that Massachusetts joins the 17 other states that have already successfully passed and implemented similar laws and saw declines in hit-and-run crashes and uninsured drivers

We're not giving into our opposition's fear-mongering — our coalition has taken on tough fights and won before because the #WFMA is a commonsense step forward for mobility and road safety.

Sign up to join us, fight back, and uphold the #WFMA:

MA Attorney General asks DPU to dismiss request for 'renewable' natural gas

Via Priya (https://twitter.com/priyainmasswho is a clean energy attorney @CLF  Massachusetts, we share the following Twitter thread:

"Good news: @MassAGO has asked the Department of Public Utilities to dismiss Liberty Gas’ request for approval to receive so-called “renewable” natural gas (aka biomethane, yet another dangerous, polluting fuel) for the next 20 years. A thread: 1/6 #MAPoli

Right now, the DPU is considering what the role of gas companies will be in our clean energy future, which requires utility companies to present plans for their energy supply. (Spoiler: an ideal plan doesn’t include any climate-damaging, polluting fuels: just clean energy). 2/6

Much to no one’s surprise, utility companies presented plans that were fancy pretenses for business as usual. Liberty Gas was one of these companies, and like others, its plan relied heavily on using biomethane in its fuel mix. 3/6

According to @MassAGO, the DPU can’t approve Liberty’s request while it’s still investigating the “future of gas” And, by requesting DPU’s approval WHILE the investigation is happening, Liberty is trying to bypass thorough review of biomethane’s impacts. 4/6

We agree with the AG. Reality check: Biomethane used for home heating still pollutes our climate while clogging and dirtying our air. This isn’t a climate solution, this is a cover for maintaining the status quo. 5/6

Now, we wait to see what the DPU will do. Utility companies’ claims, especially regarding biomethane, are highly doubtful. And it won’t help MA reach our climate goals which, at this point, is a matter of our lives. Stay tuned for what the department decides. 6/6"
