Franklin Newcomers and Friends Club 43rd Annual Craft Fair - Nov 5

The Franklin Newcomers and Friends Club 43rd Annual Craft Fair is THIS SATURDAY! 9:00 am until 3:00 pm, at the Tri-County Regional Vocational High School in Franklin.

Our craft fair is a tradition for the Town of Franklin and several local charities benefit from the funds raised by this annual event. Admission is $3, children 12 and under are free, with a maximum charge of $10 per family. 

Start your holiday shopping and pick up some unique handmade gifts! We have over 70 artisan crafters making a variety of products - holiday items, clothing and accessories, home decor, jewelry, art, candles, specialty food, handbags, stained and painted glass, ceramics, soaps, and more. Many are from Franklin and surrounding towns, so this is a perfect "shop local" event!

We are also accepting donations of non-perishable items for the Franklin Food Pantry. Donations may be dropped off at the entrance. In addition to food, items especially needed are shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant and hand soap. Please be sure to check expiration dates as the Food Pantry can not accept expired items.

Franklin Police Lieutenant's Daughter Completes FBI Training during Summer 2016

Kendyl Ryan, daughter of Franklin Police Lieutenant John Ryan, recently completed Session 18 of the FBI-National Academy's Youth Leadership Program in Quantico, Virginia. The program focused on leadership styles, overcoming adversity, and building relationships for positive outcomes.

"The town's legislative delegation gave its report to the Town Council Wednesday night - discussing efforts to direct resources to local ends and deal with the statewide opioid crisis. 

State sens. Richard Ross, R-Wrentham, and Karen Spilka, D-Ashland, and State Rep. Jeffrey Roy, D-Franklin, spoke before the council at its regular meeting. 

Spilka cited an opioid bill as one of the Legislature's biggest accomplishments over the past few months. She said it was a follow-up to a bill passed two years ago; the new one, she said, focused on treatment and prevention. 

"We did things that were first in the nation, and are now the model for other states," she said."

"For the time being, the town will not move forward with its municipal energy aggregation efforts. 

The town has received state approval for its aggregation plans - which would seek to lower local electrical ratepayers' bills by bidding out to energy suppliers - but Deputy Town Administrator Jamie Hellen said the current state of the market did not justify a change. 

"Unfortunately, the rates on the bid we had did not come out advantageously for the community," he said. "The savings were microscopic." 

While this means there will be no immediate contract with a new supplier, Hellen said, the town may choose to go out to bid at any time."

Spilka - confidence ratings are high, indices are good, trying to figure out how to explain it, possible for internet sales (without tax revenues) to be driving this, but research is inconclusive at this time

Ross - I'll be glad when the election is over

Nutting - we did reach out to all the agencies, they said it is waiting on the Governor's release
do you have a crystal ball for FY 2018?

Roy - ask us after Dec 6 (when the revenue forecasts are due)

Spilka - we need to look at health care costs, if Congress isn't doing anything, we need to, it take 40% right off the top

Nutting - it takes 10% at our level, it is a tough issue because every one does want great health care

Spilka - $15.893 Billion is the unfunded State OPEB amount, everyone is in this boat (yes, you read that properly - almost $16 Billion dollars)

Jones - continuing the road repair money, what ever help you can provide is great

Dellorco - one good factor is your phone is always open
Ross - your phones are on, so it makes it easier to get a question answered

Roy - the SAFE Coalition has done good work, approx 7 deaths and 35 saves
protocols and NARCAN being administered and used

Spilka - we are working to create another 450 beds this year and another 450 next year
we are working on the supply of NARCAN via bulk purchasing

Ross - saving them is one thing, getting them to avoid doing again is another thing
we all know people who have been affected by it
