Cultural Connections is an arts and culture roundtable. We will meet Feb 1 to discuss how to create strong Community Partnerships.

Join us! Cultural Connections, a free arts and culture roundtable, will be held Feb. 1 at 7pm at the Franklin Historical Museum, 80 W. Central Street, Franklin. Anyone interested in arts and culture, from any organization in any town, is invited to attend.  The subject of this roundtable will be Community Partnerships, and our discussion will be led by Athena Pandolf and Kelly Artamonov. Athena is the Executive Director of the wonderfully vibrant Natick Center Cultural District, and Kelly is an integral part of the team at ArtWeek, a statewide arts festival sponsored by the Boch Center.  Both of these amazing women have experience in creating strong partnerships between arts organizations, local businesses, and the community. They will present their thoughts on the subject, followed by an open discussion with you sharing stories of what has and hasn't worked for your organization, along with the opportunity to ask questions of others.  A great opportunity to network! Curbside Tree Pickup Scheduled for week of Jan 8 through Jan 13

Christmas Tree pick up is next week 1/8/18 -1/13/18 on your regular scheduled Trash and Recycling pick up day.

However due to the weather changed schedule trash and recycling next week will be delayed a day so if your regular scheduled pick up day is Monday your Trash, Recycling and Tree will be picked up on Tuesday and so on.

But Monday isn't a holiday? No but Monday will be the pick up day for those who were scheduled for last Friday. See the table below.

What’s the All Night Party? Every year after the FHS Senior Class graduates, we throw an awesome party at Horace Mann Middle School! It’s the communities way of keeping our kids safe. It takes about 300 volunteers to pull it together every year.

This is not a town paid event. The community has come together to make this event happen year after year since 1991.

For fun, we are having our second annual wine tasting at Franklin Liquors on Jan. 27, 7 PM.

I’m happy to reserve a seat or table for you and your friends! It’s a great way to get out with friends!

Meeting to review "Council Procedures Manual" - Jan 10

Before the Town Council meeting on Wednesday, Jan 10, the subcommittee looking to possible revisions or updates to the Council Procedures Manual is scheduled to meet at 6:00 PM in room 205.

The procedures manual is what sets out the order (agenda) and conduct of the meeting. The meeting is governed by Robert's Rules of Order per this manual.

Side note: when visiting New Bedford this summer, I found out that Captain Henry Martyn Roberts had been assigned there to build Fort Rodman (now called Fort Tabor Park) to protect the entrance to the harbor. It was while stationed there, he conducted a meeting and lost control of it. He went home that night to write down the process so that wouldn't happen the next time. These parliamentary procedures are what we know and use today as Robert's Rules of Order.

In the legislature we have completed much work but there is so much yet to do in this legislative session. As the new year begins, we reflect on what this past year has brought us and for what we are thankful. We addressed healthcare reform where I co-sponsored bills to address rising costs, negligent caretakers and risky insurance practices. I filed bipartisan legislation to improve access and affordability of cancer clinical trials across the state. We took up the issue of graduate student loan debt that is affecting our children and families and debated telecommunication regulations for the coming year. These are just a few of the many important topics taken up this session. Be sure to read more about my legislation in the Legislative Spotlight section. In the past year, I've worked to bring back significant funding to this district for various programs and projects, including infrastructure improvements, environmental protection grants, public school aid and much more. I've also worked to maintain fiscal discipline in our state budget and only spend within our means – and not waste your hard earned tax dollars. The Spring 2018 session will be a busy one and I am looking forward to working with my colleagues to continue improving our great Commonwealth. YMCA: Get Ahead With Our New Technology Lab And Technology Club

Thanks to a generous donation from a good friend, a technology lab has been created at our Franklin Y.

The goal of this space is to teach middle school and high school students about careers in technology.

Join us for our next Technology Club Meeting on Tuesday, January 9 from 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM at our Franklin Y.

This is a free member opportunity.

Guest speakers will be Jeff Boudreau, President of Dell EMC Storage Division as well as Gartner Research executives.

This club introduces students to the benefits of a career in the technology field and provides a safe place to learn and prepare for a job in technology.

Upcoming meeting dates are February 6, March 6, April 3, May 1, June 5 and July 10.

Franklin Children's School (FCS) announces registration for the 2018-2019 school year. Registration has begun and will run through February 8, 2018.

In the News: computer chips need patching; Medway increases mailbox reimbursement

"Technology companies are scrambling to fix serious security flaws affecting computer processors built by Intel and other chipmakers and found in many of the world’s personal computers and smartphones. 

The two hardware bugs discovered can be exploited to allow the memory content of a computer to be leaked. Such a leak could potentially expose stored passwords and other sensitive data, including personal photos, emails and instant messages. 

Researchers at Google’s Project Zero and academic institutions including the Graz University of Technology in Austria discovered the problem last year and disclosed it Wednesday."

"Residents who have their mailboxes taken out by a plow during storms may see an increase in their reimbursement by the town. 

The Board of Selectmen this week voted to increase the amount the town offers to $50, up from $25. 

Town Administrator Michael Boynton raised the matter at the board’s Tuesday meeting, saying he felt $25 was on the low side. 

“I’m beginning to think $25 is from a day gone by,”′ he said, noting that the standard mailbox likely costs closer to $50."

Franklin's mailbox policy provides for reimbursement of $45

"The reimbursement amount for damaged mailboxes is $45.00. For a resident to receive a reimbursement, they are required to provide a paid receipt or invoice. The DPW will not pay more than $45.00 per incident per household per year. 

The Franklin DPW does not provide replacement mailboxes and will not perform any repairs to mailboxes. All receipts and invoices are due no later than May 15th of the current fiscal year."
