James Montgomery Band Returns To THE BLACK BOX - Jun 22

THE BLACK BOX, downtown Franklin’s theater, music, and event venue, presents the renowned James Montgomery Band on Friday, June 22 at 8 p.m.

Blues legend James Montgomery plays with authority. While growing up in Detroit, he learned firsthand from the masters – James Cotton, John Lee Hooker, and Jr. Wells – at the legendary “Chessmate.” Over the years, Montgomery has carried on in the tradition and continues to be a vital presence in Blues as one of the most dynamic performers on the scene.

He formed the James Montgomery Band in 1970 while attending Boston University. Montgomery’s inimitable harmonica playing, combined with his energetic live shows, led to the band’s quick ascension on the New England music scene. Within two years, the James Montgomery Band was among the hottest acts in Boston, along with J. Geils and Aerosmith, and they were quickly signed to a multi-album deal with Capricorn records.

Since that time, Montgomery has recorded six albums. His first, First Time Out, has been re-mastered and re-released by MRG/Capricorn. Others include James Montgomery Band on Island Records, which was number nine on Billboard’s national playlist; Duck Fever, with members of the David Letterman Band; Live Trax, with the Uptown Horns (the Rolling Stones’ horn section); and his release on Tone-Cool, The Oven Is On.

Montgomery has toured with major artists including Aerosmith, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Springsteen, the Allman Brothers, Steve Miller and others. He has jammed on stage with B.B. King, Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker, Jr. Wells, James Cotton, Charlie Daniels, Bonnie Raitt, Gregg Allman, Laverne Baker, Patti LaBelle, and Peter Wolf, among others, including an impromptu session with Mick Jagger at New York’s “Trax.”

Over the years, Montgomery’s band has been a springboard for many musicians, with members having included Billy Squire, Wayne Kramer (MC-5), Jeff Golub (Rod Stewart), Jim McCarty (Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels), Jeff Pevar (Ray Charles Orchestra and Crosby, Stills & Nash), Bobby Chouinard (drummer with Ted Nugent, Squire, and Robert Gordon), Jeff Levine (Joe Cocker), Aerosmith’s Tom Gambel, and many others.

Josh Perry, Managing Editor of HockomockSports.com, provides the game recap of Franklin High School's Super 8 championship win. FHS went through the Super 8 tournament undefeated and beat Central Catholic 3-2.

"In the bottom of the eighth inning in Monday night’s Super 8 final at Brockton’s Campanelli Stadium, it looked like Central Catholic had finally figured out Franklin starter Bryan Woelfel. A single and a double put two runners in scoring position with nobody out in a tie game. 

Franklin coach Zach Brown decided that he needed to make a change and called in third baseman Jake Noviello. The Fairfield University-commit had been warming up during the Panthers at-bats just in case and was now called on to try and get out of the ultimate high-leverage situation. 

“We had a shot,” said Brown about how he felt bringing in his ace in that situation. “I felt like it was a spot in the order and just knowing Jake and knowing his competitiveness I thought we had a shot.” 

Noviello explained, “I pitched against them the other day and I got hit around in one inning, so I knew to just come at them tonight and just try to gas them up.” He added with a shake of his head, as the accomplishment settled in, “It’s unbelievable, unbelievable.”

June 17, 2018 To the Tri-County Community, Graduation is in the books, MCAS 2018 is complete and we are looking forward to finals this week. Our spring sports are drawing to a close with Spring Sports Awards for Track and Field on the 19thand all other spring sports on the 20th. Fall sports signups will begin next week. Congratulations to the Class of 2018 it was a beautiful Sunday afternoon and with the exception of some wind gusts almost perfect for an outdoor ceremony. Many thanks to our special guests and thanks to the parents and families that attended. Each class has its own personality and this one was no exception, well behaved and fun, and very supportive of each other. MCAS 2018 has us testing freshmen for the first time. Our honors Biology freshmen took the test with the sophomores. We look forward to seeing their scores in the fall, they were a very confident looking group. As we look at changing our schedule over the next few years to allow for four lab sciences in addition to more Advanced Placement sections, we would like to see all our freshmen take a Science MCAS in the future. Please note that we have changed our finals schedule this year with half days for students June 19-22 and a makeup day on Monday June 25. Students will take two finals per day so attendance is important. Lastly, we are pleased to announce Sara Martin has been appointed to the Athletic Director position.  We wish Sara much success in her new position. Have a safe and happy summer! “These kids were a part of our community and part of our lives for a time”

"In 2014, the community suffered a traumatic shock after siblings Lexi Munroe, 8, and Sean Munroe, 7, died after being trapped inside a hope chest. On Tuesday, Sean would be graduating from the fifth grade at Davis Thayer Elementary. 

On Monday morning, the day before Davis Thayer’s fifth-grade “stepping up” ceremony, 38 pink lawn flamingos were bunched up on a field nearby where the children would get their graduation certificates. 

The plastic bird flock is part of an effort to raise money for a scholarship in the name of the Munroe children, but they took it a step further this time - a flamingo was planted for each of the 37 students who were graduating, but added one more to represent their classmate, Sean, whom they lost four years ago. 

But the birds won’t be at the ceremony; the group has been asked to remove them. The siblings’ aunt, Kristin Williams, said the administration told them that rehashing their deaths might be emotionally harmful for the students."

Town of Franklin (MA): Budget Collection - FY 2019

"Fireworks cost about $20,000 and is paid for purely with donations from local businesses and residents"

"A classic 4th of July tradition will return to the first town in the United States to be named after the founding father Ben Franklin. 

A fireworks display will be shot off from the field in the back of Franklin High School on July 3 at 9:30 p.m., and joins the annual carnival that be held at the town common starting June 29. Though there is no parade again, the Fourth of July Commission has its hopes up that the event will return next year. 

The town common will be packed with carnival rides, live entertainment, food booths, and town vendors for the holiday stretch. 

Commission Chairman Joe Carmignani said that this was an important event to keep alive. 

“We wanted this tradition to keep going,” Carmignani said. “It’s great for families and kids that aren’t able to go away for the 4th of July holiday.”
