In the News: Medicare for all; US Senate candidates review positions

“Medicare for all” is a popular phrase that Massachusetts residents have heard often in recent years. 

The idea to create a single, tax-funded health insurance plan for all Massachusetts residents - also known as “single-payer” - is supported by some of the state’s leading political figures, including Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jay Gonzalez. 

“I’m a former health insurance CEO who thinks we should get rid of health insurance companies,” Gonzalez said during a recent interview with Wicked Local. 

The Democratic nominee previously served as chairman of the Massachusetts Health Connector, the state-based health exchange. He left to become president and CEO of CeltiCare Health, a subsidiary of Centene Corp., a publicly traded health insurer that reported 2017 net earnings of more than $800 million, according to federal filings."

"The three U.S. Senate candidates talked with reporters and editors from the Telegram and Gazette, the Daily News and other GateHouse publications Thursday to state their cases, appearing before the editorial board for wide-ranging discussions on issues including immigration, student loan debt and health care. 

“It’s this fundamental question about how people see government, and what is the role of elected representatives,” said Democratic incumbent Elizabeth Warren, 69, describing the race she faces as well as races around the country. 

Independent candidate and entrepreneur Shiva Ayyadurai, 54, kicked off the day and did not pull any punches - name-calling, criticizing any unfavorable or counter-narrative media coverage as “beyond fake news ... invisible news,” and saying racism and collusion were responsible for everything from keeping him off the debate stage to the failure of immigration reform and the high price of prescription drugs."

Franklin Police Association - 5K Foot Pursuit - Nov 3

Registration for the 1st Annual 5K Foot Pursuit takes place at Franklin High School, 218 Oak St, Franklin, MA on Saturday November 3. 

There is plenty of parking on site. Registration opens at 7:30 AM and the 5K race starts at 9:00. At 8:15 AM there will be a Kids Fun Run, free for kids 13 and under.

The 5K course is USATF certified. The 5K will be professionally chipped timed by The Empire Timing Co.

REGISTRATION
Pre-Registration for the 5K is $20 for the first 100 registered and $25 thereafter. Race day registration is $30.

5K Pre-Registration for runners 17 and under is $10 and $15 on race day. The Kids Fun Run is free for kids 13 and under.

T-Shirts for the first 100 registered for the 5K.

– Franklin scored a goal in each half to pick up a win over visiting Attleboro. Tim Duval scored an unassisted tally in the first half as the Panthers took a 1-0 advantage into the break. Junior Sam Stowell converted a penalty kick in the second half for the Panthers.

Girls Soccer = Franklin, 2 @ Attleboro, 0 – Final
– Erin Quaile opened the scoring just before halftime, tapping in the rebound from Sabrina Addi’s free kick that came back off the bar. Calen Frongillo added the second from the penalty spot in the second half.

In the News: Tri-County 8th grade open house; Attorney General candidates debate

"The goal at Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School is to show the future, and that’s exactly what officials plan to do during this year’s open house. 

This year’s eighth-grade open house at Tri-County takes place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1 at the school, 147 Pond St. 

Scott O’Brien, head of Tri-County’s guidance department, said the point is to get students who are looking to take their educations outside the usual classroom setting. 

“We’ve been reaching out, but mostly to tell people that we are one of the most evolved programs that is currently available to students,” O’Brien said. “We really just want to let people know that this isn’t your grandfather’s traditional vocational school.”

"Attorney General Maura Healey on Wednesday afternoon parried a series of attacks from her Republican challenger Jay McMahon over the Democrat’s record on guns, drugs and suing the Trump administration, defending her office over the course of the final, hour-long debate in the race. 

Healey, who is widely expected to win a second, four-year term as attorney general, highlighted her work prosecuting drug traffickers and preventing dangerous copycat assault weapons from being sold in Massachusetts. 

She also said that while she doesn’t relish suing President Donald Trump, she will continue to do so if she believes it’s in the interests of the state or its residents. 

“I don’t wish for or want opportunities to sue the federal government. But it is my job as attorney general to stand up for the interests of our state, for our residents, for our businesses and for our values,” Healey said.

Franklin Turkey Trot Helps Feed Local Families in Need - Nov 22

For the hundreds who will come out on Thanksgiving morning for the Franklin Turkey Trot 5K Family Fun Run, the motto is “Run now, gobble later!” When families gather together for their traditional feast after the event, there will be many more grateful for the bounty that results from the race. The registration fee of $20, or 20 nonperishable goods, goes directly to the Franklin Food Pantry, keeping donations local to help feed those in need.

The event begins and ends at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS Church) at 91 Jordan Road in Franklin. The race, open to runners and walkers of all ages, attracts experienced runners as well as families who want to get out and exercise together before their traditional holiday get-together. A professional race organizer officially records timing, pace and rankings for each runner.

“Thanksgiving is truly a time to be grateful for the many blessings we have,” said Erin Lynch, executive director for the Franklin Food Pantry. “But it is also an occasion to think of others who are struggling to put food on their tables. The Franklin Turkey Trot rallies our community to give back and help protect others from the threat of hunger. The nearly 1,000 individuals we serve are grateful to our community for coming out to support us.”

The November 22 race will begin at 8 a.m. Registration can be done online at franklinturkeytrot.org; at the LDS Church from 7 – 9 p.m. the Wednesday before the race; or the morning of the race from 7 – 8 a.m. Official race t-shirts can be purchased online for $10 for those who register by November 2.

The registration fee of $20 is preferred as it allows the Pantry to “stretch our budget for leaner times,” said Lynch. “Our capacity to store the donated goods is extremely limited this time of year.” If participants prefer to donate goods, Lynch said they can check the list of current needs on the Pantry’s website at franklinfoodpantry.org.

Lynch is grateful for the hard work of Race Director Krystal Whitmore who volunteers her time and energy to coordinating this traditional event. “We are fortunate to have an incredibly hard-working group of volunteers, led by Krystal, who make this event possible,” said Lynch. “Krystal organizes church members, high school students, and her own family members to volunteer. The amount of work involved is amazing. We could not do this without them.”

FHS field hockey and volleyball teams top Attleboro

Field Hockey = Attleboro, 1 @ Franklin, 7 – Final
– Attleboro scored early in the second half to cut Franklin’s lead in half but the Panthers responded with five goals in a 15-minute span to earn a big win. Cassi Ronan and Regan Paterson (from Amanda Lewandowski) scored in the first half to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead at the break. Alex Compton scored for Attleboro to make it 2-1 just two minutes into the second half. Franklin responded with goals from Victoria Quinn (from Paterson) in the 41st minute, Ashley Reutinger (from Lewandowski) in the 45th minute, Paterson just 17 seconds later, Lewandowski in the 50th minute, and Ronan in the 55th minute. Christina Luccini and Anna Jardine each had three saves in net.

Volleyball = Attleboro, 0 @ Franklin, 3 – Final
– Franklin completed its undefeated regular season (17-0) with a 3-0 win over visiting Attleboro (25-9, 25-14, 25-11). Ellie Wisniewski (three aces) had a team-high eight kills while Peyton Arone (two aces), Hailey Sanders, and Lily Galluccio had six kills apiece. Lauren McGrath finished with 26 assists while Emma Clifford ended the game with an ace for the Panthers.
