Both FHS girls and boys basketball teams open season with wins vs. Oliver Ames

Via HockomockSports.com, we share the results of the fall sports competition for Franklin High School on Tuesday, December 13, 2022. We also provide the link to the full set of Hockomock League results below.

Boys Basketball = Franklin, 55 @ Oliver Ames, 42 – Final
– Franklin overcame a slow start to erase a double-digit deficit and pick up a win on the road in Easton. Oliver Ames came to play, racing out to an 18-5 lead after eight minutes with senior Chris Elias (11 points) and sophomore Cole Craffey (14 points) each hitting a three. But the Panthers flipped the switch and dominated the second quarter, holding the hosts to five points while its offense got going with 24 points. Justin Allen, who finished with 14 points, hit a pair of threes in the quarter, junior Andrew O’Neill (13 points) added one, and junior Sean O’Leary went off for 13 of his game-high 24 points in the second. Allen, O’Neill, and O’Leary each connected from downtown in the third to keep the Panthers ahead (44-30) going into the fourth.

Girls Basketball = Oliver Ames, 45 @ Franklin, 54 – Final
– Franklin was able to hold off a fourth quarter charge by OA to pull out a foul-filled season opener and continue its long win streak in league play. The Panthers jumped out to a 17-7 lead after the first and extended the advantage to 14 heading into the final eight minutes. OA rallied, scoring 18 points in the fourth and twice cutting the lead down to as little as seven, but Franklin made enough plays to seal the victory. Katie Peterson battled foul trouble in the second half, but finished as the game’s top scorer with 13 points. Chloe Fales, Caelyn Leonard, and Lizzie Newman each scored 10 points for the Panthers and Bridget Leo added eight. Freshman Kamryn Derba scored a team-high 11 points on her varsity debut for OA. Maeve Horsman added nine points, including seven in the fourth, Annie Reilly had eight, and Maddie Homer had seven in the loss.

Tis the season for Project PJ , and you can help!

Franklin High School Baseball, MA (@FHSCoachZBrown) tweeted Mon, Dec 12, 2022:
FHS'23 Ethan DePaolo (@DepaoloEthan) is looking for your support.
Ethan's running this years Project PJ & has a lofty goal of collecting 325 pairs of new pajamas for foster children of all ages (newborn-18yo).
Please see his email below! Any consideration is appreciated! Thank you!  https://t.co/RI9BOo8dvp

Hello!                                                         December 2022

My name is Ethan DePaolo and I am a Senior at Franklin High School. Project PJ was started in 2007 and eight years ago. my sister was contacted by one of the families who had previously run it asking if she would take it over, as my family has participated in this project for over 10 years. Since Ryan is at school in NYC, I have taken over. Project PJ is a community service project founded to bring awareness to kids in need placed in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts foster care programs.
I am asking people to donate NEW pajamas for foster children of all ages, newborn to 18 years. The pajamas I collect will be donated to the Whitinsville office of the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families which helps the communities in our local area. Including Franklin.

Foster children are very unfortunate to be placed in the situation they are in. They leave their homes with barely anything and families are only given $20 a day to spend for their daily needs. Pajamas help ease the transition for these children and I would like to ask you to support Project PJ this holiday season. Last year, the project donated around 300 pairs of pajamas and this year the goal is 325.
All sizes are in great need. Pajamas can be dropped off at 48 High Ridge Circle at your convenience. We have a large plastic container on our side steps for collection. If you'd rather purchase pj's online, you can have them shipped directly to our home.
Donations in the form of cash, check or Venmo, @Ethan-DePaolo are also accepted. We would like all donations by January 1st, but later donations are always appreciated. If you have any questions do not hesitate to email me at ethan_depaolo@gmail.com or message me on Instagram at @ethan.depaolo

I appreciate your consideration in supporting this cause!

With Gratitude,
Ethan DePaolo

CommonWealth Magazine: "More permeable surfaces can help save our waterways"

"IMAGINE SWIMMING in a water so murky that you can hardly see your toes, a water laden with toxic algae, a water devoid of the marine life we know and love. This could be the reality of Bostonians within the coming years if stormwater runoff continues to pollute the Boston Harbor.

Impervious pavement, which prevents water from naturally seeping into the ground, allows water from storms to flow into the local waterways. This stormwater is often laden with garbage, nutrients, chemicals, and other pollutants that can negatively impact the health of the local waterways. The excessive amount of impermeable pavement in Boston enables an increased amount and flow of polluted stormwater into local waterways. This surplus of water can lead to flooding and catastrophic effects on infrastructure. To protect our waterways and houses, impermeable pavement in Boston must be replaced with a more eco-friendly permeable pavement."

In Kyiv, I saw Dante under sandbags – a modern image of the hell of war | Clive Myrie | The Guardian

"I took quite a lot of photos on my phone when I was in Ukraine this year, but this one jumped out at me as I was scrolling through them. Here we have Dante – the Italian poet, philosopher, writer – with his marble head poking up out of the sandbags. It’s in a park on Volodymyr Hill in the centre of Kyiv.

It’s not just an arresting image. Dante is a harbinger of the Renaissance; he’s a symbol of culture and learning. And that is the opposite of war, which is a regression to dark times. This is what Ukraine and Kyiv are having to labour under – and so Dante finds himself stifled by sandbags. Of course, one also thinks of the Divine Comedy and the seventh circle of hell, which is violence. That’s what the people of Ukraine have been enduring: a modern circle of hell.

The fact that Dante had to be covered with sandbags tells you everything – the Russians are attacking things that are nothing to do with a military campaign. That is a particular hell, when civilians are seen as legitimate targets for an advancing army. And as soon as I see this image, all of this floods into my mind."

HockomockSports.com: "2022-2023 Hockomock Girls Basketball Preview"

Via HockomockSports.com we share the Franklin High School girls basketball preview and provide the link to the full listing of girls basketball previews.

FRANKLIN
2021-2022 Record: 22-2
2021-2022 Finish: Reached Div. 1 Quarterfinal
Coach: John Leighton

Franklin has dominated the Kelley-Rex division for the past four years, which included a state title run as well, but with a lot of new faces jumping into the lineup this season, the league title race could be a lot closer this winter. The Panthers may not be able to overwhelm teams with size like they have in past few years, but an athletic core of players returns to play typically tough defense and get out and run on the break.

The focal point this season will be senior forward Katie Peterson. After a breakout junior year in which she led the team in scoring, the UMass girls lacrosse commit comes back as one of the top wings in the league. Her athleticism will be critical on both ends of the floor. Senior guard Bridget Leo is also back to run the offense and will be one of the team’s top perimeter defenders. Senior Lizzie Newman emerged last season as a solid rebounder and post defender and her outside shooting could be a major factor.

There are also several players who stepped in at times last year that will need to take on bigger roles for the Panthers this season. Junior Sasha Tracey gives Franklin good length on the wing and adds another athlete that can get out on the break and finish. Her improved outside shot will also help stretch defenses. Sophomore Chloe Fales is a newcomer to watch with her athleticism and ability to score at multiple levels.

“This team is working to find its identity and play unselfish basketball,” said Franklin coach John Leighton. “I have been very impressed with the leadership of our seniors who have stepped up and provided mentorship to our younger players to speed their integration into the team.”

FHS' O'Leary featured in "Boys Basketball: Ten Players to Watch in 2022-2023"

Via HockomockSports.com we share the "Boys Basketball: Ten Players to Watch on 2022-2023." Sean O'Leary is featured for Franklin. We provide the link to the full listing of Players to Watch.

SEAN O’LEARY, SENIOR – FRANKLIN

Franklin had a lot of new faces in their lineup and despite being a young team, had a lot of success. One of the big reasons for all of that success was the emergence of forward Sean O’Leary. A 6-foot-4 forward, O’Leary can do it all on the offensive end of the floor and enters the year as one of our preseason picks for Player of the Year.
O’Leary kept improving each and every game last year, finishing with 11.3 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game, and earned HockomockSports All-Underclassmen Team honors. At his size, he’s a matchup problem in the post and is really crafty finishing around the rim, but he really separates himself with his ability to score from just about anywhere on the offensive end. Defensively, he’s very sound and his length makes it very difficult for opponents.

FRANKLIN
2021-2022 Record: 6-11-4
2021-2022 Finish: Reached Div. 2 Round of 32
Coach: Mike Lubin
Franklin is the only team other than Canton to have won a Hockomock League title and the Panthers come into the season with a more experienced, and deeper, roster to try and get back on top. Former assistant Mike Lubin has taken over as head coach after the retirement of longtime coach Margie Burke and he has a balanced lineup to work with this winter.

The Panthers will be hoping to be more solid on the defensive end of the ice this season, building on the structure they have created in all three zones. Senior Shaw Downing is a four-year varsity player and a dynamic skater along the blue line, not only being sure on the puck in her own zone but also capable of carrying the play into the attack. Junior Lindsay Dennett continues to improve each season and sophomore goalie Izzy Brown is coming off an impressive rookie campaign between the pipes.

Sophomore Julia Flynn was the team’s leading scorer last year and she is back to power the Franklin offense. Senior Lindsay Atkinson is also back, after missing all of last winter with an injury. Atkinson had a big sophomore season and will be a huge addition to the top line. Senior forwards Dana Stott and Molly Hurley bring two-way strength to the forward line.

“We’re a close group with great leadership and a good mix of young talent,” Lubin said. “We’re all excited to get the season started and build on our strong team chemistry from last year.”
