In the News: MA joints state compact on PPE; MA adds RI to restrictions list

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:

"Massachusetts is among seven states that are entering formal talks with manufacturers with the goal of facilitating rapid point-of-care antigen tests that could more quickly detect COVID-19 outbreaks in workplaces, schools and congregate care settings.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, who announced the interstate testing compact Tuesday, negotiated the agreement with the Rockefeller Foundation in his final days as chairman of the National Governors Association. Plans call for each state to purchase 500,000 tests.

“Increasing both testing capacity and access to testing is a critical part of stopping the spread of COVID-19,” Gov. Charlie Baker said in a statement. “We are pleased to join this interstate compact and look forward to working with this bipartisan group of governors to collectively build on these shared goals.”

"Rhode Island on Tuesday was added to travel advisory lists for Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

The new rules for self-quarantines when traveling from Rhode Island to those states were imposed after Rhode Island saw recent upticks in coronavirus cases.

The rules apply to Rhode Islanders traveling to those states, as well as to people returning to those states from visits to Rhode Island. There are some exceptions, like people who have been in Rhode Island for less than 24 hours.

Massachusetts added Rhode Island later on Tuesday, hours after the tri-state area did. There are exceptions in Massachusetts, like going to work or producing a negative test. Massachusetts’ order is effective Friday."

Contollo Mass Manufacturing donates PPE as promised

On Tuesday, June 30, 2020 Contollo Mass Manufacturing donated PPE gowns, both reusable and disposable to several of the local fire departments in a brief ceremony at the Franklin Fire Station #1.

Franklin Town Council Chair Tom Mercer opened the remarks. He had received the first call inquiring about the machine at the former Clark-Cutler-McDermott facility and who the current owner was.

State Representative Jeff Roy spoke highlighting that Contollo was one of a couple of dozen Mass companies to receive grants from the State.

Peter Berzin, CEO of Contollo (https://contollomassmanufacturing.com/), spoke of the effort to get started and that they are operating currently on one shift producing about 7,000 gowns per day, with plans to expand to second shift and increase capacity.

Chief James McLaughlin coordinated with the local area fire departments (Milford, Medway, Plainville, Bellingham, Norfolk) to have representatives there for the ceremony.

“The biggest thing is that they’re cost-effective”

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:
“Cutter #2” - the 81-year-old die-cutter inside the Contollo Mass Manufacturing factory in Franklin - has been churning out roughly 2,500 medical gowns a week less than a month after previously collecting dust for four years. The new operators of the previously-vacant facility, which reopened in the middle of May, said there are 40-50 institutions in Massachusetts alone that are interested in placing orders for the gowns, with the smallest order received requesting 500,000 of them.

The largest order requested – by the Defense Logistics Agency – was 110 million.

The factory, housed in the building once operated by the Clark-Cutler-McDermott company at 5 Fisher St., has bid on about 14.2 million of those gowns, said Contollo Mass Manufacturing CEO Peter Berzin.

“Our phones have been ringing off the hook,” said the Pennsylvania resident, who joined forces with Chief Engineer Norb Jankowski, a former Michigan resident, and Chief Operating Officer (COO) Bob Vozzella, a Franklin resident and business owner, to run the operation. They’ve received constant calls for gowns from institutions across the state, including from the Seven Hills Pediatric Center in Groton, Boston EMS, the Boston Medical Center, local Veteran Affairs (VA) hospitals, and intuitions in New York, Ohio, North Carolina, Maine and California.

"factory plans to produce three levels of medical gowns"

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:
"The previously-vacant Clark-Cutler-McDermott Company building in Franklin will be brought back to life next week when it starts producing its first round of personal protective equipment (PPE).

“It’s coming along - they’re getting very close (to starting production),” said Town Council Chairman Tom Mercer of the factory building on Fisher Street, which will begin production of medical gowns on Tuesday or Wednesday.

The facility, which has the potential to make more than 100,000 gowns weekly for first responders and hospital workers throughout Massachusetts and Rhode Island, will deliver its first batch of gowns to Milford Regional Medical Center.

The factory expects to receive its last materials on Monday to begin production, but likely won’t start operating at full capacity immediately, said Mercer."
