Tri-County AD, Sara Martin, was recognized with the Theodore “Ted” Damko award by the Massachusetts’ Secondary Schools Athletic Directors Associations (MSSADA)

Over five years ago, Sara Martin accepted the position of Athletic Director (AD) at Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School. Martin has been a history teacher for more than 20 years at Tri-County and coached girls soccer, girls basketball, and track and field before her AD appointment.

Martin’s passion and dedication is being recognized as she has been selected for the Theodore “Ted” Damko Award from the Massachusetts’ Secondary Schools Athletic Directors Associations (MSSADA). This award is presented annually to an athletic administrator with 3-5 years of experience who has exemplified the highest standards of their profession and has made significant contributions to their school and community. “Sara is a dedicated and passionate Athletic Director. She is constantly supporting and cheering on our athletes. She is engaged with our athletes during and outside of games, always committed to their well-being. As a coach, I appreciate her support during the seasons, she makes sure that we always have what we need. She is always brainstorming new ideas to bring in culture to our athletic program. The athletes appreciate her support of them!” says Julie Caffrey, coach and Special Education teacher.

Martin was a three-sport athlete at North Smithfield High School in Rhode Island and a graduate of Providence College. Her dedication to the students’ well-being both on and off the field speaks volumes about her character. She feels that education and sports go hand-and-hand. “Sports are an extension of the classroom. The things that students are learning in the classroom, they can take with them out on the field,” remarks Martin.

One of the biggest challenges Martin has faced is the uncertainty of the pandemic. With games being canceled and attendance restricted, Martin and Tri-County coaches had to adapt and meet the challenge with passion. “Kids aren’t going to remember the scores, wins and losses. They are going to remember the memories that they make with their teammates,” Martin says. This mindset helped the Athletic Department persevere, so the students could continue participating in the activities they love.

“Sara is unafraid to try new things in order to create opportunities for our teams. She communicates in an organized and professional manner. All of the coaches and Sara share a common vision- centered around the success and development of our student athletes. Put simply, Sara is certainly deserving of all of the accolades she receives,” remarked Steven LaPlante, coach and English teacher.

“I’d like to recognize the herculean efforts of my coaching staff before, during, and after the pandemic. They have worked tirelessly to keep kids engaged over the last two years. The amount of time and energy they invest in their athletes and helping them be the best versions of themselves goes unrecognized. They embody the values of the Tri-County Community and the mission of the Athletic Department,” commented Martin.

We extend our congratulations to Martin and wishes for continued success both on and off the field.

2022 HockomockSports Boys Basketball Awards recognize: Digiorgio, Vinson, O'Leary, Harvey, and Coach Neely

HockomockSports.com has posted their listing of awards for Boys Basketball for the Winter 2021-2022 season. We shared the FHS selections and provide the link to the full listing.

Second Team

Henry Digiorgio – Franklin – Guard
After getting a taste of varsity basketball a year ago, Franklin sophomore Henry Digiorgio looked like a veteran for the Panthers this year. He was a handful on the offensive end with his ability to pull up from range plus the ability to take defenders on one-on-one and attack the basket. He was one of the best rebounding guards in the league this season. He had a team-high 16.1 points per game to go along with 6.1 rebounds while shooting 41% from three-point range and 85% from the free-throw line. “Hank made huge strides from his freshman to sophomore year going from a role player off the bench to a go-to scorer and one of our best rebounders,” said Franklin head coach CJ Neely. “He also showed a huge amount of toughness coming back from a difficult injury and competing hard in the state tournament. I am really excited to see the next step in his development.”

Sean Vinson – Franklin – Forward
Franklin senior Sean Vinson had a breakout year for the Panthers and emerged as one of the top players in the Hockomock League. Despite playing few minutes prior to this season, Vinson was an impact player from the first tipoff of the season to the last second of the playoff game. He hurt defenses with his shooting, played solid defense night in and night out, and was a leader both on and off the court for Franklin. He finished the year with 12.6 points per game and hit on 38.5% of his three-point attempts. He was third on the team with 5.2 rebounds per game. “Sean has been one of the best leaders we have ever had at Franklin,” said Franklin head coach CJ Neely. “Right from the start of the year, he did all he could to help his teammates feel comfortable and thrive. He really gave us a huge lift on both ends of the floor, whether it was timely buckets or giving a great effort on defense.”

HockomockSports.com Boys Basketball Underclassman of the Year

Franklin sophomore Henry Digiorgio has been named the HockomockSports.com Boys Basketball Underclassman of the Year for the 2021-2022 season, the 10th year the award has been given out.
Digiorgio got his feet wet during last year’s COVID-shortened season, getting minutes as a freshman, and showed little flashes of what was to come. This year, Digiorgio was a part of the starting lineup and took over as the go-to scorer for the Panthers. He showed off his range with his three-point shooting and he attacked defenses with great confidence, finishing strong at the rim.
I am really excited to see the next step in his development.

All Underclassmen Team

Henry Digiorgio, Franklin
Franklin sophomore Henry Digiorgio had a great season for the Panthers this year. He had a team-high 16.1 points per game to go along with 6.1 rebounds while shooting 41% from three-point range and 85% from the free-throw line. He earned HockomockSports.com Underclassman of the Year honors (see above) for his achievements this season.

Sean O'Leary, Franklin
There were a lot of new faces for the Panthers this season, and Franklin sophomore Sean O’Leary seized that opportunity and emerged as one of the better players in the Hockomock League. A versatile player, O’Leary can play multiple positions on the offensive end and can be a real mismatch for opposing defenses. He finished the year with 11.3 points per game to go along with 5.1 rebounds and 2.3 assists, shooting at a 36% clip from three-point range. “Sean was at the center of so many big plays for us this season,” said Franklin head coach CJ Neely. “I am most impressed with his character and versatility. He has some of the best inside moves I have seen in a long time, can take opponents outside and knock down threes, and is one of the best help defenders on our team, leading our team in charges as well.”

All Defensive Team

Ben Harvey, Franklin
Franklin junior Ben Harvey emerged as the top defensive option on the Panthers, who were once again on the of the best defensive teams in the Hockomock League. The Panthers had a host of good defensive players but Harvey’s versatility and willingness to commit to the defensive end made him stand out. He could match up with the physicality of the big men, and he was quick enough to keep up with speedy guards. He averaged 4.7 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game. “A great leader and one of the toughest competitors I have ever coached,” said Franklin head coach CJ Neely. “Beef is always ready to take on any challenge and do anything our team needs night to night to get the win. He does all of the little things that teammates and coaches respect that don’t always stand out in the newspaper the next day but are essential to what we do as a team.”

HockomockSports.com Boys Basketball Coach of the Year
Franklin head coach CJ Neely has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Boys Basketball Coach of the Year for the 2021-2022 season. It’s the first time Neely has been honored with this award.
Neely guided a young and inexperienced group to a terrific season, posting a 21-4 record with the second-best offense in the league (64.3 points per game) and second-best defense (48.8 points allowed per game) in the Hockomock. Coming into the season, Neely had to replace his entire starting lineup last season and a total of 123 career points among all returners. He started three sophomores, a junior, and one senior and battled through a difficult schedule. Franklin’s only losses came to Kelley-Rex division champs Taunton (the Panthers were the only Hock team to beat the Tigers this season), twice to rival Mansfield (who reached the D2 Elite 8), and Catholic Memorial (D1 Elite Eight) in overtime.

Going up against some of the top teams in the state, Marchand was Franklin’s go-to option in the offensive zone. First Team

Cole Pouliot-Porter – Franklin – Goalie
Franklin sophomore Cole Pouliot-Porter took over in net for the Panthers this season and looked like a veteran from the start, helping the program clinch yet another Kelley-Rex title. Not only was Pouliot-Porter successful in league play, but he also had strong performances against some of the best teams in the state. He finished the regular season with 459 saves in 18.2 games played, posting a 2.62 goals against average with a 0.910% save percentage. “What can I say, he was our heart and our backbone all season,” said Franklin head coach Anthony Sarno. “This kid is just amazing and only 15 years old. To me and our squad, we consider him the best in the state! I can’t say enough about Cole, such a great person off the ice and in the classroom as well. A pleasure to have on our team.”

Dylan Marchand – Franklin – Forward
Franklin senior Dylan Marchand had a dominant season on the ice for the Kelley-Rex division champion Panthers. A speedy, skilled forward, Marchand was a handful for opposing defenses to deal with. He was among the top scorers in the league with 12 goals and was a catalyst in setting up the Panther offense, finishing with 17 assists in the regular season. “Dylan is a player with great speed that has the ability to change a game in an instant,” said Franklin head coach Anthony Sarno. “I call him the Energizer Bunny, as he never stops…great kid and a pleasure to have. He is going to be missed.”

Second Team

Jack MacKinnon – Franklin – Defense
Franklin senior Jack MacKinnon had a great comeback season, captaining the Panthers to their 11th straight Kelley-Rex division title and a trip to the Division 1 state tournament. Still battling through an injury, MacKinnon is a smart defenseman that reads the ice very well. He can jump into the offense too and does a nice job moving the puck around in the offensive zone. “He gave us everything he could once he was cleared,” Franklin coach Anthony Sarno said. “I cannot say enough great things about Jack. He is just an amazing young man and elite in the classroom as well, a National Homer Society member and highly respected by his peers for all he brings to the table. He works extremely hard to improve himself each and every day and has a very bright future shared. He will be missed.”

Christian Shabbick – Franklin – Forward
Franklin senior Christian Shabbick had a standout season on the ice at forward for the Kelley-Rex division-winning Panthers. Noted as one of the most improved players on the squad, Shabbick gave Franklin much-needed depth in its attack as the Panthers battled some of the top teams in the state. He finished the regular season with 12 goals and 12 assists, including two goals against eventual state champs St. John’s Prep. “Christian Shabbick has been my most improved and hardest working player day in and day out,” said Franklin head coach Anthony Sarno. “He works so hard and has a great skill set and he put that on display for everyone to witness this season. He is a great teammate as well. He deserved to be an All Star as he represents what an All Star should be!”

All Underclassmen

Cole Pouliot-Porter – Franklin – Goalie
Franklin sophomore Cole Pouliot-Porter looked like a seasoned veteran more than a first-year starter, helping the Panthers clinch another Kelley-Rex division title. Playing against some of the best teams and offenses in the state, Pouliot-Porter turned in strong performance after strong performance, giving Franklin a chance in those contests. He finished the regular season with 459 saves in 18.2 games played, posting a 2.62 goals against average with a 0.910% save percentage. “Everywhere we go and teams we play, they always comment about how mature and incredible skilled Cole is, especially for his young age,” said Franklin head coach Anthony Sarno. “Looking forward to seeing him between the pipe next season as he grows and matures even more.”

Logan Marchand – Franklin – Defense
Franklin sophomore Logan Marchand battled through injury all season but still was a big contributor for the Kelley-Rex division champs. Despite playing against some of the best offenses the state has to offer, Marchand was a rock in the defensive zone for the Panthers. He finished the regular season with three goals and added eight assists for 11 points. “Logan Marchand is as tough of a defenseman as you will find for a sophomore,” said Franklin head coach Anthony Sarno. “He has size strength and the ability to transition to offense pretty quick. He is such a good teammate and a great person, any coach would love to have him. I can’t wait to see him with two good strong knees next season as he will be a dominating force on the blue line again!”

Ben Paterson – Franklin – Forward
Franklin sophomore broke into the lineup for the Panthers and became an instant contributor, helping the Kelley-Rex division champs establish a deep and talented forward group needed to compete with their loaded schedule. He finished the regular season tied for second on the team in points, scoring 10 goals along with 14 assists to tie teammate Christian Shabbick with 24 points (seventh-most in the league). “Ben Paterson came in as a sophomore with a good skill set and displayed that every practice and game,” said Franklin head coach Anthony Sarno. “He was our second-leading scorer in point on the point and was counted on in special teams play and performed well. His ability to see the ice and get to stops is nice to see for a sophomore. I can’t wait to see him as he grows and matures as a player.”

HockomockSports.com: Girls Basketball Awards recognize Peterson, Padula, and Quinn

HockomockSports.com has posted their listing of awards for Girls Basketball for the Winter 2021-2022 season. We shared the FHS selections and provide the link to the full listing.

First Team

Katie Peterson – Franklin – Forward
Franklin junior forward Katie Peterson made a huge leap this season, developing from a role player on last year’s team into the leading scorer this season. Peterson averaged 14 points per game, while also leading the team in steals and deflections and shooting nearly 50 percent from the field. With the range to stretch defenses and the ability to take it to the basket off the dribble, Peterson helped Franklin win a fourth straight league title, completing a perfect Hock campaign, and advancing to the Div. 1 Elite Eight. She was selected as an all-star by the Hockomock League coaches. Franklin coach John Leighton said, “I am so proud of Katie’s development this season. Her athleticism and hard work has helped her become a dominant player in our league.

Second Team

Stefany Padula – Franklin – Guard
Franklin senior guard Stefany Padula developed into one of the league’s top outside shooters and one of its top perimeter defenders this season. The Springfield College commit helped Franklin win a fourth straight league title and reach the Div. 1 Elite Eight. Padula averaged 11 points per game and shot 40 percent from long-range this season, giving the Panthers a threat from deep to complement its strength in the paint. Padula was selected as a Hockomock League all-star by the coaches. Franklin coach John Leighton said, “Stef has served as a role model to younger players in our program. She is the first on the court and the last to leave as she tirelessly works to improve her game.”

Olivia Quinn – Franklin – Forward
Franklin senior forward Olivia Quinn had another impressive season for the Panthers, helping them win a fourth straight Kelley-Rex division title and reach the Div. 1 Elite Eight. Franklin lost only one league game (and six games overall) in her four-year career. The Wesleyan University commit averaged 11 points per game this season and finished with 904 for her career (missing out on reaching 1,000 because of the COVID-shortened 2021 season). She also came up big in the playoffs with 23 and 25 points in her final two games. She was selected as a league all-star. Franklin coach John Leighton said, “Olivia is one of the best players to ever come out of this program. She has played an integral role in our unprecedented success over her four years.”

All Defensive Team

Stefany Padula, Franklin
Padula, a senior guard, is a tireless worker who has developed her game in so many ways over the course of her four-year career. This season she became one of the league’s top perimeter defenders, frequently being matched up with the opposition’s best scorers. Her work rate, length, and ability to read the game made her tough to shake. Franklin coach John Leighton called her the “top defender” on the league champion Panthers, adding, “She is the first on the court and the last to leave as she tirelessly works to improve her game.”

FHS' Bain = Coach of the Year; Arone, Gulla, Kindred, Tracey, Marino, Tirrell, and Portesi recognized with football awards

HockomockSports.com has posted the Football Awards for the fall 2021 season. Franklin High School was well represented by the following individuals:

HOCKOMOCKSPORTS.COM HOCK 5 QUARTERBACKS
Jared Arone – Franklin – Senior
Franklin senior Jared Arone had a standout season at quarterback for the Kelley-Rex division champion Panthers, guiding the team to one of their best seasons in program history. Arone was very confident in the pocket and spread the ball around to a talented group of receivers. He rarely made mistakes (only two interceptions) and put a lot of pressure on defenses with his ability to read the coverage and find open receivers — and deliver on the mark. “The leader of the Kelley-Rex’s leading offense, Jared threw for over 2,000 yards while completing 68% of his passes,” said Franklin head coach Eian Bain. “His 28 touchdown throws compared to only two interceptions had Jared as one of the most efficient quarterbacks in the state.”

HOCKOMOCKSPORTS.COM HOCK 5 RUNNING BACKS
Mack Gulla – Franklin – Senior
Franklin senior Mack Gulla was a workhorse for the Panthers this season, not only adding a key element in the running game to balance the offense but emerging as one of the most dangerous backs in the Hockomock League. The Panthers have had a strong passing game for a bit but Gulla really made the offense as good as it was with his strong running, often overpowering his way through the defense. “The focal point of the Franklin attack, Mack ran for 1,700 yards on 250 carries,” said Franklin head coach Eian Bain. “Mack’s 17 touchdowns were among the leaders in the league. Also a threat out of the backfield, Mack had over 200 yards receiving and while being a workhorse on the ground.”

HOCKOMOCKSPORTS.COM HOCK 5 WIDE RECEIVERS/TIGHT ENDS
Shane Kindred – Franklin – Senior
Franklin senior Shane Kindred was one of the toughest covers around, not only in the Hockomock League but in the surrounding region and in all of Division 1. After developing some chemistry during the Fall 2 season, Kindred and quarterback Jared Arone were in sync throughout the entire year, leading to a Kelley-Rex division title and the top seed in the D1 State tournament. It seemed like Kindred was a threat to take it to the house almost every time he got his hands on the ball. “Settings school records for receptions (59) and yards (1,020), Shane found the end zone 12 times on the year,” said Franklin head coach Eian Bain. “Shane had a knack for making big plays in the passing game, while also playing special teams for the Panthers.”

Will Tracey – Franklin – Senior
Franklin senior Will Tracey had a breakout season at receiver for the Panthers, who won their first-ever Kelley-Rex division title and first Hockomock crown since 2009. Tracey joined fellow weapons Shane Kindred and Mack Gulla to make the Panthers one of the most well-balanced and dangerous offenses in the league and Division 1. If defenses tried to focus on the other options, Tracey continually made defenses pay. He also came up with some of his biggest performances in some of the biggest moments of the year. “Will seemed to come up big and in the biggest moments,” said Franklin head coach Eian Bain.”Tracey hulled in 41 receptions for 551 yards and 10 touchdowns. In the playoffs, and in big league games, he shined the most.”

HOCKOMOCKSPORTS.COM HOCK 5 LINEBACKERS
Jack Marino – Franklin – Senior
Franklin senior Jack Marino was one of the unsung heroes of the Kelley-Rex division champion Panthers this season, emerging as a reliable and depending option at linebacker for head coach Eian Bain. He was a key piece of a much improved Franklin defense, starring at middle linebacker. He will be remembered in program history for his fourth down stop against KP on Thanksgiving, clinching the Panthers’ first win over the Warriors in a decade on the holiday. “Jack Marino always came through in the biggest moments for the league-leading defense,” said Franklin head coach Eian Bain. “Eighty-seven tackles, 10 tackles for loss, and six passes defended made Jack a stalwart on a dominant defense.”

Joe Tirrell – Franklin – Senior
Franklin senior Joe Tirrell was very dependable for the Kelley-Rex division champion Panthers, shining on the defensive end of the ball for head coach Eian Bain. Tirrell was like a coach on the field for the Panthers, organizing a defense that allowed a league-low 167 points against (under 16 per game). Not only could he drop back in coverage and make plays, but his speed was also utilized in blitz packages to pressure opposing defenses. “One of the most versatile defenders in the Hock, Joe Tirrell amassed 78 tackles to go with 10 QB pressures, two forced fumbles, five passes defended, and four tackles for loss,” said Franklin head coach Eian Bain.

HOCKOMOCKSPORTS.COM HOCK 5 SPECIAL TEAMS
Garrett Portesi – Franklin – Junior
Franklin junior Garrett Portesi made the most of his opportunities in his first year as the starting kicker for the Panthers. Franklin had a very reliable kicking game the past couple of seasons and Portesi continued that trend this season. He was very consistent in the kicking game, getting a lot of work after Franklin scored 340 points this season. His kickoffs also helped the Panthers often win the field position battle. “His first year on the varsity roster, and the second year overall playing football, Garrett was as clutch as could be in the kicking game,” said Franklin head coach Eian Bain. “With key field goals against Milford and Methuen, he helped secure big wins along the way to a 10-1 record.”

COACH OF THE YEAR
"Franklin head coach Eian Bain has been selected as the 2021 HockomockSports.com Football Coach of the Year. Bain led the Panthers to their first ever Kelley-Rex title and first Hock title since 2009 as well as the top seed in the Division 1 state tournament.
The Panthers went 10-1 on the season, going a perfect 5-0 against division opponents to win the Kelley-Rex. Franklin’s lone loss came in the D1 State Semifinal in a shootout with Springfield Central, who went on to win the D1 State Final. Franklin was the top defense in the league with under 16 points per game allowed and the top offense in the Kelley-Rex with over 30 points per game.
In the playoffs, Franklin dominated both Braintree and Metheun to reach the semifinals. Franklin went toe-to-toe with the Golden Eagles, Bain helping the Panthers respond almost every time before falling 60-49."

HOCKOMOCKSPORTS.COM FIRST TEAM

Kendall Jones – Franklin – Defense
Franklin senior Kendall Jones closed out her three-year varsity career by helping the Panthers continue their long unbeaten run in league play, win a third straight Kelley-Rex division title, and advance to the team’s first state semifinal. Jones was selected as a league all-star and picked to play in the Best of 60 Mass. State Coaches Association all-star game. As a threat at both ends of the field, Jones chipped in with eight goals and nine assists, while helping Franklin hold teams to just 14 goals in 22 games. Franklin coach Michelle Hess said, “Kendall is a very skilled and fast defensive player. Kendall’s leadership skills both on and off the field are quite impressive and a huge reason we had so much success over this past season.”

Kaitlyn Carney – Franklin – Midfield
Franklin junior midfielder Kaitlyn Carney put together an incredible individual season to help the Panthers win a third straight league title and advance to the first state semifinal in program history. With 37 goals and 18 assists this season (including seven points in the playoffs), Carney was the top scorer in the league for the second straight season. She has more than 100 points in her first three years and was selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Year (see above). Franklin coach Michelle Hess said, “Kaitlyn is one of the most talented athletes I have ever had the pleasure of coaching but Kaitlyn also works very hard at her skills. Kaitlyn has a drive and determination that is rather impressive, she never settles.”

Shaw Downing – Franklin – Forward
Franklin junior forward Shaw Downing was a key part of the league’s top offense. Downing scored 20 goals and had nine assists this season and was sixth in the league in scoring during the regular season, helping Franklin score 124 goals as a team, on its way to a third straight league title and the program’s first-ever state semifinal appearance. Downing was selected as an all-star by the Hockomock League coaches. Franklin coach Michelle Hess said, “Shaw can put the ball in the net once she gets it in the circle. Shaw is a fast and highly skilled forward that is aggressive to the ball and has the ability to find the net and collect rebounds off the goalie’s pads and redirect them skillfully into the goal.”

HOCKOMOCKSPORTS.COM SECOND TEAM
Kate O’Rourke – Franklin – Defense
Franklin senior defender Kate O’Rourke was integral to the success of the Panthers defensively this season. With O’Rourke on the left side, Franklin allowed only 14 goals in 22 games this season on its way to a third straight league title and a spot in the state semifinal for the first time. O’Rourke was selected as an all-star by Hockomock League coaches and chosen to play in the Best of 60 Senior All-Star Game by the state coaches association. Franklin coach Michelle Hess said, “Kate is a very smart and highly skilled player who relies on her speed, skill, and aggressive play to keep her opponents out of the circle. Kate is our trail on our defensive corners and makes it very difficult for teams to execute their corner plays against us.”

Emily Carney – Franklin – Midfield
Franklin freshman Emily Carney stepped right into the heart of the midfield this season and became a crucial piece of the Panthers winning a third straight league title and making a run to their first state semifinal. She scored six times and had 18 assists, as part of the league’s top offensive unit, but also helped shield the back line as part of the league’s top defensive group. In one of the most difficult positions on the field, Carney never looked out of place and showed a game sense beyond that of most freshmen. Franklin coach Michelle Hess said, “Emily’s presence on the field at center midfield was noticed immediately. Emily’s field hockey IQ and her ability to play both offensively and defensively were instrumental in the success of our team this year.”

Haley Wernig – Franklin – Forward
Franklin freshman forward Haley Wernig jumped right into the varsity team and provided a boost to the league’s top offense. In her first season, Wernig scored 16 goals and added six assists. Her 22 points were in the top 10 in the league this season and helped the Panthers win a third straight Kelley-Rex division title, extend their long league win streak, and reach the state semifinal for the first time. Wernig played on both wings and showed the speed and skill to compete with the top teams in the state. Franklin coach Michelle Hess said, “Haley has a bright future ahead of her especially because her work ethic is impressive. Haley is always coming to me for feedback and asking how she can execute her skills better, she is very reflective and a pleasure to coach.”

COACH OF THE YEAR = Michelle Hess
"Franklin’s Michelle Hess has been selected as the 2021 HockomockSports.com Field Hockey Coach of the Year. Hess led the Panthers to their third straight Kelley-Rex division title and to the program’s first-ever Div. 1 state semifinal.

“Coming into the season, it wasn’t obvious that Franklin would be the dominant team they turned out to be,” said HockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry. “Michelle fit players into the right spots and built a team that was not only a league power but a statewide one. Talent helps, but Michelle kept the Panthers focused on the goal from the start of the season and they made program history.”

Despite returning only three starters from last year and beginning the season with three freshmen in the starting lineup, the Panthers finished as the top scoring team in the league with 124 goals, which was more than double that of second-place Attleboro (61). Franklin also allowed only 14 goals in 22 games all season (and five of those goals came in the semifinal against Andover). With a goal differential of plus-110 in a competitive league, Franklin put together a historically dominant season."

FHS' O'Neill, Cinelli, and Griffith recognized with soccer awards by HockomockSports.com

HockomockSports.com has posted the Boys Soccer Awards for the fall 2021 season. Franklin High School was well represented by the following individuals:

HOCKOMOCKSPORTS.COM BEST XI
Terry O’Neill – Franklin – Midfield
Franklin senior Terry O’Neill had another great year controlling the midfield in the heart of the Panthers’ lineup. A three-year starter for head coach Fran Bositis, O’Neill consistently plays at a high level and can be counted on to make the right choice each and every game. Sitting in a defensive midfielder role, he shored up one of the best defensive units in the league and added a team-high six goals along with one assist. “Terry was our best player, our hardest worker, and an excellent leader both on and off the field,” Bositis said. “He has an excellent understanding of tactics and he was the player for us who set the tone both offensively and defensively. Everything we did went through Terry.”

Rex Cinelli – Franklin – Defense
Franklin sophomore Rex Cinelli was a towering presence in the Panthers’ back four, making his squad one of the hardest teams to score against in the Hock. The lone underclassman selection in the Best XI, Cinelli partnered with Aidan Griffith to form the best center back duo in the league. He logged a ton of minutes this season and consistently made good decisions in the air and with his tackling. He also added a pair of goals and four assists for Franklin, who finished second in the Kelley-Rex. “Rex was very consistent throughout the year,” said Franklin head coach Fran Bositis. “He was a lockdown defender for us and did a great job of winning 50-50 balls whether they were on the ground or in the air. He certainly had a big impact on the success of our team defense.”

HOCKOMOCKSPORTS.COM SECOND XI
Aidan Griffith – Franklin – Defense
Franklin senior Aidan Griffith had a standout out season this fall, emerging as one of the best defenders in a league known for tough defenses. He partnered with Rex Cinelli to form the best center back duo in the league. His veteran leadership was key throughout the season and his ability to come away with the ball on key challenges was a big reason the Panthers allowed less than a goal a game this year. “Aidan was the leader of our defense and also played a big role in initiating our attack,” said Franklin head coach Fran Bositis. “Aidan has great feel for the game and he was very good at making defensive adjustments on the field. He was very calm under pressure and always made good decisions on the field.”

FHS' Zub, Anderson, Welch, and Regan recognized with soccer awards by HockomockSports.com

HockomockSports.com has posted the Girls Soccer Awards for the fall 2021 season. Franklin High School was well represented by the following individuals:

On the first eleven:

Anya Zub – Franklin – Forward
Franklin sophomore forward Anya Zub followed up her stellar rookie season by becoming one of the league’s most prolific forwards. Zub led the Panthers with 20 goals and added six assists, helping them retain the Kelley-Rex division title and reach the Round of 16 in the Div. 1 state tournament. Her 26 points were the fourth-highest total in the league during the regular season. She was selected as an all-star by the league’s coaches and as the HockomockSports.com Underclassman of the Year (see below). Franklin coach Jodi Klein said, “Anya just keeps getting better. She is a very effective striker, composed in front of the goal and makes excellent decisions on whether to shoot or pass. She eagerly accepts the pressure of being our top scorer.”

Norah Anderson – Franklin – Defense
Franklin junior Norah Anderson was dominant in the heart of the Panthers’ back line this season, helping Franklin secure back-to-back Kelley-Rex division titles and reach the Div. 1 Round of 16. Anderson’s leadership and athleticism were instrumental in the Panthers recording nine clean sheets this season and allowing only 11 goals in 18 games. Only twice this season did teams manage to score more than one goal in a game against the Panthers and no one scored more than two. Franklin coach Jodi Klein said of Anderson, “The captain of our defense. One of the toughest and smartest defenders I have ever had the pleasure to coach. Virtually unbeatable one-on-one, directs play from the back, and a leader on and off the field.”

Rachel Welch – Franklin – Goalie
Franklin sophomore Rachel Welch is the next in a long line of talented goalkeepers for the Panthers and she played a key role in retaining the Kelley-Rex division title and reaching the Round of 16 in the Div. 1 state tournament. Welch had a goals against average of just 0.60 this season, recording nine clean sheets, and allowing only nine goals in 15 games this season. Only twice this season did a team score more than one goal in a game against the Panthers. Franklin coach Jodi Klein said, “Rachel is an incredibly talented goalkeeper and has an impressive level of poise and maturity in the goal for just her second high school season. She still has two more years at the high school level and she will continue to be a player to watch leading our team from the back.”

On the second eleven:

Stella Regan – Franklin – Midfield
Franklin senior midfielder Stella Regan was one of the top playmakers for the Panthers, creating scoring chances for herself and for teammates as Franklin won a second straight Kelley-Rex division title and reached the Round of 16 in the state tournament. After suffering a horrible injury as a sophomore, Regan was finally back to 100 percent this year and finished the season with 11 goals and six assists, none bigger than her perfectly weighted chip that led to the overtime goal against Reading in the opening round of the playoffs. Franklin coach Jodi Klein said of Regan, “She creates multiple scoring opportunities in every game, has an unstoppable engine, and a perfect touch allowing her to consistently create attacking chances.”

Underclassman of the Year:

Anya Zub – Franklin
"Franklin sophomore Anya Zub has been selected as the 2021 HockomockSports.com Girls Soccer Underclassman of the Year, as the top performing freshman or sophomore player. The sophomore forward was one of the leading scorers in the league, as the Panthers won a second straight Kelley-Rex division title.

After a breakout season last year on the wing, Zub moved into a center forward role this fall and scored 20 goals and had six assists, making her the fourth-leading scorer in the league during the regular season and the top scoring underclassman. She also came through in big games, scoring against both Mansfield and King Philip in the final games of the season to ensure Franklin won the league title outright.

“Anya just keeps getting better,” said Franklin coach Jodi Klein. “She is a very effective striker, composed in front of the goal, and makes excellent decisions on whether to shoot or pass. She eagerly accepts the pressure of being our top scorer.”
