Crandall scored twice more, first from Carney and then from Sophia Cueno, sandwiched around a goal from Haley Wernig (from Crandall and Lindsay Dennett). The Panthers carried a 4-0 lead into the second half and tacked on three more in the third: Crandall (from Chloe Essam), Carney (from Cuneo), and Addie Weiss (first career goal). HockomockSports.com preview of Kelly-Rex Div football for 2023 season - FHS

FRANKLIN
2022 Record: 7-3 (Kelley-Rex division co-champions)
2022 Finish: Reached Div. 1 State Quarterfinals
Coach: Eian Bain

Key/Returning Players: Derek Dubriske, Sr., WR/DB; Brendan Larivee, Sr., FS; Jack Nutter, Sr., MLB; Michael Davide, Sr., RB/LB; Cody Howard, Sr., OLB; Ben Ryan, Sr., OL/DL; Brandon Large, Sr., OL/DL; Jermaine Flecha, Sr., SS; Julian Rampino, Jr., DE; Jack Murphy, Jr., OL/DL;

Outlook:
For the second straight year, Franklin graduated a talented group of seniors but coming off back-to-back Kelley-Rex division titles, expectations are still high for head coach Eian Bain and the rest of the Panthers.

Franklin will mostly be an inexperienced group to start the season but the Panthers do possess some key players in key spots all throughout the lineup. Having those veteran presence on the field will be very important as the Panthers turn to sophomore James Bruso will look to take over as the starting quarterback in Week 1 at Wachusett. There will be a familiar face in the backfield as senior Michael Davide will carry the load in the run game, and he’s got some strength to run behind. Senior Ben Ryan is back at tackle, senior Brandon Large returns at guard, and junior Jack Murphy steps in at center to bolster the run game for Davide and protection for Bruso.

Franklin has had some of the best receivers in the league the last couple of seasons like Luke Davis and Shane Kindred, and the next man up could be senior Derek Dubriske. Coming off a strong junior season playing mostly in the slot, Dubriske gives the Panthers a reliable go-to option they can count on. There’s some good talent on the defensive side of the ball as well, with returners Brendan Larivee, Jack Nutter, and Cody Howard back in the mix. Larivee will anchor the secondary alongside senior Jermaine Flecha, Nutter and Howard headline the linebackers group, and junior Julian Rampino is a name to keep an eye on along the defensive line.

“We need to stay focused on the process and less on the results to find success,” Bain said.

Selected FHS football games to watch via HockomockSports.com

With the current setup of the football schedule, it seems like there is a marquee match-up almost every week. The start of the season includes some intriguing non-league clashes that will see top teams from the Hock take on some of the best teams in Massachusetts. As always, the league schedule has a ton of good games and there are even some big non-league tilts sprinkled throughout the later weeks. And with Thanksgiving being a league game, it’s possible we’ll see some de facto championship games on the holiday. We scoured the schedules and came up with these games to keep an eye on this year.

OCTOBER 13TH – CENTRAL CATHOLIC @ FRANKLIN – 7:00
Franklin has a gauntlet of a schedule every year with its Kelley-Rex opponents, but head coach Eian Bain is really putting his squad to the test this year with the Panthers’ non-league slate. Franklin opens at home against Wachusett and then at Brockton (both made the D1 playoffs last year) before taking a trip to Duxbury (2022 D4 state champs and three straight trips to the state final). After a pair of league games against North and Taunton, Franklin welcomes Central Catholic, who was the #3 seed in D1 last year and made it to the state semifinals. We can’t predict Franklin’s record but we know the Panthers will be one of the most battle-tested teams in the state.

OCTOBER 27TH – FRANKLIN @ MILFORD – 7:00
A year ago these rivals split the Kelley-Rex division title and this fall, in the final week of the regular season, their meeting will have heavy implications on who wins it this year. Both teams have followed an upward trajectory under their respective head coaches but both the Panthers and Scarlet Hawks have graduated back-to-back senior classes. That leaves the challenge of developing consistency year in and year out, and it looks like both programs are at that point. This rivalry predates the Hockomock League so there is a lot of history here.

HockomockSports.com: Player of the Week - Luke Davis, Franklin Football

Via HockomockSports.com, we share the "Player of the Week" selection

"Franklin senior Luke Davis has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Nov. 20 through Nov. 26. Davis is the 12h player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2022-23 school year.

Davis came through in his final high school football game, scoring three touchdowns and catching the game-winning two-point conversion to help Franklin rally for a win at King Philip on Thanksgiving. It was not only the second straight win for the Panthers against the Warriors, but also clinched a share of a second straight Kelley-Rex division title (shared with first-time league champ Milford). This is the first time that Franklin has won back-to-back league titles since completing a three-peat in 1971.

“Luke Davis has always answered the call,” said Franklin head coach Eian Bain. “We lost a lot of fire power from the 2021 group. He helped replace a lot of production on the season. On Thanksgiving, we tried just about everything to get him in opportune spots to shine and he didn’t disappoint. He showed why he is one of the best receivers in the state and in our program’s history."

FHS football comes back to top KP on Thanksgiving 29-28 to take back-to-back Hockomock titles (video)

Via HockomockSports.com, we share the results of the fall sports competition for Franklin High School on Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 24, 2022.

Franklin, 29 @ King Philip, 28 – Final
  • 1st Quarter: (F) Jase Lyons 69-yard pass to Luke Davis, Garrett Portesi XP good; (KP) William Astorino 2-yard rush, Matthew Kelley XP good.
  • 2nd Quarter: (KP) W. Astorino 12-yard rush, M. Kelley XP good; (F) J. Lyons 6-yard pass to L. Davis, G. Portesi XP good.
  • 3rd Quarter: (KP) W. Astorino 2-yard rush, M. Kelley XP good; (KP) Tommy McLeish 26-yard pass to W. Astorino, M. Kelley XP good; (F) J. Lyons 19-yard pass to L. Davis, G. Portesi XP good.
  • 4th Quarter: (F) Mike Davide 3-yard rush, J. Lyons 2-point pass to L. Davis.

Josh Perry, Managing Editor of HockomockSports.com, provides the game recap:
"King Philip got the ball back up by seven points with just under two minutes remaining in the third quarter of Thursday morning’s holiday matinee at Macktaz Field and went back to work with the ground game that had been nearly unstoppable for most of the game.

After running more than seven minutes off the clock, KP had first down from the Franklin 30 and looked like it was maybe one or two plays away from clinching the title-deciding showdown.

Rudy Gately (21 carries, 116 yards) was stopped for a loss of three by Emmett Lackey. Quarterback Tommy McLeish took the next snap and went on a sweep around the left side, but Franklin read the play and pried the ball loose. Devine Johnson pounced on it at the 34 to give the visitors a chance with 6:11 on the clock.

Mike Davide (11 carries, 40 yards) broke free for a 13-yard gain into KP territory and Jase Lyons (20-of-27, 232 yards) hit Josh Ribeiro on the sideline. Ribeiro refused to go out of bounds, cutting back infield and eventually gaining 17 to the KP 28. After back-to-back completions to Luke Davis, Lyons kept it himself, looking for contact in the secondary and being brought down at the three. Davide finished the drive to bring the Panthers within one."

MIAA bracket says FHS will play Methuen at a date/time TBD

Field Hockey = Division 1 = #28 Barnstable, 0 @ #5 Franklin, 2 – Final
Josh Perry, Managing Editor of HockomockSports.com, provides the game recap:
"Franklin has made no secret of its desire to make another deep playoff run, but, even for a team that reached the state semifinal a year ago, it’s natural to feel some extra nerves ahead of the opening tournament game, especially when facing an unfamiliar foe with a still relatively young roster.

The Panthers got a stiff challenge in Friday’s first round game at the Beaver St. Field. Barnstable, the No. 28 seed, was able to withstand Franklin’s pressure for long stretches of the game, keeping within a goal until the final five minutes of a 2-0 loss.

It was the type of battle that can be a reminder for a team that scored 129 goals in the regular season and has gone unbeaten in more than 60 straight league games that things are different once the tournament kicks off.

“You never know,” said Franklin coach Michelle Hess. “I’ve never played them before, I didn’t know anything about them, you can only watch so much film, and they show up and they’re better than I expected, especially being the 28 seed.”

Milford tops Franklin football 43-24 on Friday

Via HockomockSports.com, we share the results of the fall sports competition for Franklin High School on Friday, October 28, 2022. We also provide the link to the full set of Hockomock League results below.

Milford, 43 @ Franklin, 24 – Final
1st Quarter: (M) Nick Araujo 4-yard rush, N. Araujo XP good.
2nd Quarter: (F) Garrett Portesi 28-yard field goal; (M) Romeo Holland 15-yard rush, N. Araujo XP good; (F) Jase Lyons 69-yard pass to Luke Davis, G. Portesi XP good; (M) Evan Cornelius 10-yard pass to Andrew Rivera, N. Araujo XP good.

4th Quarter: (M) E. Cornelius 3-yard rush, N. Araujo 2-point rush; (M) R. Holland 1-yard rush, N. Araujo XP good.

Josh Perry, Managing Editor of HockomockSports.com, provides the game recap:
"When Milford was putting together its game plan for Friday night’s visit to Pisini Stadium, the Hawks thought there were opportunities to attack Franklin’s defense with the passing game, trying to utilize their weapons on the edges. After 24 minutes, the game plan was boiled down to line up behind the big offensive line and let the running game do the work.

The Hawks rushed for more than 300 yards as a team, all but nine of those yards from running backs Nick Araujo and Romeo Holland and quarterback Evan Cornelius, and five touchdowns. Milford only threw one pass in the second half, even as Franklin’s offense started to click, and rolled to a 43-24 victory that sets up a three-way tie atop the Kelley-Rex division.

“Up front, we were incredible tonight,” said Milford coach Dale Olson about his offensive line of Oliver McKee, Anthony Dew, Ryan O’Connor, Keith Lee, and Tyler Potter. “I looked at the kids at halftime and said we might not throw a forward pass because every time it’s 4, 5, 6 [yards]. That’s a testament to our guys up front. They just dug in and they pushed a good Franklin team around tonight.”

Field Hockey = Franklin, 2 @ Walpole, 6 – Final
– In a battle of two of the top teams in the entire state, Walpole earned a 6-2 win over the Panthers. Franklin thought it scored first when a deflected shot found the back of the net but the shot was ruled dangerous and the goal was wiped off. Walpole took a 1-0 lead into halftime before Kaitlyn Carney found the back of the net to make it 1-1. The Porkers scored back-to-backs but the Panthers got one back before the end of the third when Shaw Downing redirected a shot from Carney to make it 3-2. Boys Soccer = Milford, 2 @ Franklin, 1 – Final
– A strong first half resulted in a pair of goals for the visiting Hawks, and that proved to be enough to secure a key two points on the road to pull into a first place tie with Franklin. Nick Ribeiro’s cross found Eduardo Santana for the opening goal of the game, and Milford doubled its lead when John Borges played Jonny Tacuri Castro in to make it 2-0. Milford played the final 20 minutes down a man after a red card, and Franklin cashed in just moments later when Rex Cinelli finished a free kick from Noah Cain, but the visitors were able to play out the rest of the game with the lead. Lucas Fernandes had a strong game, including a massive second half save to preserve the lead.

Girls Soccer = Franklin, 3 @ Milford, 0 – Final
– Franklin scored late in the first half and added a pair of late goals to pull out the road win. Caitlyn Bruno opened the scoring with three minutes left in the first half, from a Chloe Stavely assist. Olivia Costa had a brace in the second half for the Panthers. Anya Zub and Bridget Leo had the assists. Rachel Welch and Hailey Aniki combined for six saves and a clean sheet. Milford coach Lou Colabello praised his team’s performance against one of the league’s elite, taking a lot of positives from the game. He noted the play of freshman Kaleigh Tourtelot, who impressed in only her third varsity game in goal.
