New England Clean Energy Connect, a 145-mile transmission project of Central Maine Power Company, is expected to link the electrical grids in Quebec and New England to provide cleaner and more reliable hydropower directly to a converter station in Lewiston, Maine, and into the regional power grid.
This week, CMP’s parent company filed a lawsuit against the state of Maine claiming a ballot question that project opponents got on the November ballot to overturn a key permit approval is unconstitutional. That suit came days after the Maine Supreme Judicial Court ruled in a separate case that contested signatures turned in by project opponents were valid.
Bay State utilities and Gov. Charlie Baker’s administration chose the project to help Massachusetts meet its statutory requirements to increase renewable energy supplies after their first choice -- the Northern Pass project through the White Mountains of New Hampshire -- was stymied by regulators there."
"In a decision blasted by South Shore lawmakers as reckless, irresponsible and dangerous, Gov. Charlie Baker’s administration on Friday approved air quality permits for a natural gas compressor station in Weymouth, with state environmental regulators concluding the Enbridge Energy project conforms with air pollution regulations.
The project will support natural gas capacity upgrades and the expansion of a gas transmission pipeline system that runs from Mahwah, New Jersey, to Beverly, Massachusetts, for transportation and deliveries on the Maritimes & Northeast Pipeline system. Collectively, it’s referred to as the Atlantic Bridge Project, which includes the siting of the compressor station, and which received federal approval in January 2017.
“This reckless and irresponsible decision is harmful to the health, safety and well-being of residents of Weymouth and the entire South Shore,” said Rep. James Murphy, D-Weymouth, in a statement released after state energy officials disclosed their decision just before 5 p.m. Friday.
“Generations of residents living in the Fore River basin have been burdened by industrial pollutants. These industries once supplied much-needed jobs to the area, while simultaneously poisoning the earth, water and air,” added state Rep. Ronald Mariano, D-Quincy. “Now, Enbridge plans to expose current and future generations of Quincy and Weymouth residents to a new source of toxins, all in the name of padding the profits of a multinational energy corporation. With today’s decision, Enbridge is one step closer to succeeding.”

"Officials from Eversource are hosting an open house next week at the Franklin Senior Center to discuss and answer questions about a project the company is undergoing that is designed to provide transmission system upgrades.
The hearing takes place from 5-7 p.m. on Sept. 20 at the Senior Center, 10 Daniel McCahill St.
According to Eversource, the so-called Medway to Walpole Reliability Project calls for the company to separate two existing transmission lines onto new structures along an existing right of way (power line corridor). The project is expected to take about a year to complete, and runs from the West Medway Substation to the Walpole Substation. It will take place in portions of Bellingham, Franklin, Medway, Millis, Norfolk and Walpole.
Michael Durand, a spokesman for Eversource, said the project is due to start construction in early 2020. He said that during the construction period, there should be no interruption in power in affected areas."
