Summer Services at First Universalist Society in Franklin

The First Universalist Society in Franklin (FUSF) is pleased to announce its summer worship services. These services will explore the theme of individual spiritual practices.  The series starts on July 9 and runs through August 27, 2023.

Services begin at 10 a.m. and all are welcome to attend.

Each Sunday, members of FUSF will share a spiritual practice that resonates deeply within them.  Attendees will have the opportunity to explore practices such as prayer; mindfulness meditation as inspired by Thich Nhat Hanh or walking the labyrinth.  Connection with nature underlies several other services. We will also explore poetry writing as a spiritual practice.

During the last service of the summer, Reverend Beverly Waring, Interim Minister, will explore a multitude of ways to enhance your daily life through engaging your mind, body, heart, will and soul with themes such as contemplation, activity, relationships, action and creativity.

Schedule of Spiritual Practices Sundays at FUSF:

July 16: Writing Poetry
July 23: Walking the Labyrinth

GoFundMe: Help Reese fight her ongoing battle with FND

"Reese Doyon, 17, a current student at Franklin High School, was recently diagnosed with FND, functional neurological disorder, and is currently battling non-epileptic seizures, occurring almost daily for up to multiple hours at a time. She has been fighting this battle since June. There are very limited resources for adolescents with this diagnosis. Reese has been admitted to Boston Children's Hospital, has been to the ER multiple times, has gotten multiple EEG’s and brain scans done, has seen multiple neurologists and therapists, and we can’t seem to get these events under control.

These seizures prevent Reese from living her everyday life, causing her to miss almost half of the school year so far. She is currently involved in various things such as Best Buddies, unified basketball, unified sports, AAU basketball, and varsity basketball at Franklin High school. Her involvement in all of these have been put to a stop due to her current state.

These seizures leave her unconscious with the loss of speech and mobility from her hips down. These could take up to 24 hours to come back. Because these seizures can occur daily, she isn’t able to live her life like an average teenager.

With this being said, we are trying to raise money for her to get a seizure-alert service dog that would help her know when a seizure is coming and KEEP HER SAFE. This dog would give both Reese and her family some comfort knowing that she will always be safe.

Also, If anyone is aware of any other resources, PLEASE let us know or contact Amy Doyon.

Any donation or share helps!!"

“Give us this day, our daily bread.” - Interfaith Thanksgiving Service, Sunday, November 20 at 7 PM

“Give us this day, our daily bread.”

Many of us grew up saying some version of these words regularly, and quite a few of us still do. In this time of Thanksgiving, let’s consider what we are really asking when we request “our daily bread.” What is the deeper meaning in sharing a meal, in asking for relief, and is it the same today as it was for the Pilgrims of Massachusetts in 1621?

The Franklin Interfaith Council announces its annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service for the community. Everyone is welcome! Please join us on Sunday, November 20 at 7 PM at Franklin Federated Church, 171 Main Street, Franklin.

This year, the service features preacher Rev. Bev Waring, Interim Minister at First Universalist Society of Franklin, and live performance by the Interfaith Choir, directed by Mary Diehl of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The collection will benefit the Interfaith Fuel Assistance Fund, administered by the St Vincent de Paul Society.

The Franklin Interfaith Council is an organization whose membership is composed of faith communities in the town of Franklin, Massachusetts. It addresses the various needs of its community by recognizing the power of faith as defined by the individual spiritual traditions.  However, it is these same traditions that unite us in the common goal to initiate and sponsor activities that enrich and challenge the citizens of Franklin. The intent of the council is to sensitize the Franklin community to issues of deprivation and social injustice, and to promote tolerance and understanding through shared worship, programs, performances, and publications, and to bring the understanding of our faith traditions to bear on these issues. Additionally, through these same devices, the council seeks to acknowledge and celebrate both the diversity and the common values existing within the community. The council is a nonprofit organization that has as its primary purpose the betterment of the community it serves.

"Until we feel we have an adequate level of staffing"

"T riders, be warned.

After months of slowdowns, shutdowns, and nearly unprecedented federal intervention, the MBTA said on Wednesday that summer service cuts on the Red, Blue, and Orange Lines are being extended into the fall. The transit agency also said Green Line service will be reduced and bus service will be trimmed further starting Aug. 28.

The moves mean T riders will have to endure more infrequent trains and buses just as students are starting classes and many workers are considering, or being required to make, a post-Labor Day return to downtown offices."

Franklin Matters is leaving Facebook; your alternatives to consider to remain "in the know" (part 1)

Effective Nov 302021 the Franklin Matters Facebook page will go away. You are given notice to find one of the other options to obtain the valuable information shared but not longer directly by me on Facebook.

Someone can also set up a way to take what I share and share it themselves to Facebook. I have no way to stop that. Folks occasionally do so on their own today.

My personal account will remain on Facebook to maintain my family and network connections. I have limited what is posted and shared in that way and am willing to take the risk to maintain those family connections.

I can no longer take the risk exposing your information in this way. Facebook needs to change and only actions like this will get their attention to do so.

Why Nov 30?
The Franklin election is important and as divisive as Facebook is, for those who depend upon it for info, I will provide some time for them to begin to make their move to one of the alternatives.

Need or want Help
If you need or want help setting up email or RSS, I've scheduled a few Zoom sessions to walk through the options to subscribe (other than Facebook).

Franklin Food Pantry re-evaluates and changes plans for 138 East Central St

The Board of Directors, at the recommendation of Franklin Food Pantry leadership, Franklin Food Pantry Building Committee, and the team of professionals hired to build out 138 East Central Street, has decided to put 138 East Central Street on the market for sale, effective immediately.

We are extremely disappointed that this property no longer meets the operational needs of the Franklin Food Pantry (FFP). We are appreciative of the hundreds of hours of work spent exploring every possible avenue to successfully open the building as the Pantry’s new location. Not only have staff and our team of architects, builders, engineers, traffic consultant, legal services, and site planning experts worked tirelessly to vet potential solutions, the public also has been incredibly supportive of this endeavor.

After almost 18 months of work, we concluded that while 138 East Central was a viable option for FFP pre-pandemic, COVID-19 so drastically changed our operations and programming that the property no longer allowed us to fully meet the needs of our neighbors.

Some of the new programs that this property was challenged to support include:
  • Curbside Distribution – shown to be incredibly important for our neighbors with health issues, mobility concerns, young children, constrained schedules etc.
  • Home Delivery – critical for our most vulnerable neighbors facing chronic disease, cancer treatments, transportation limitations, and other situations that restrict travel
  • Holiday Distributions – this program grew under COVID, adding a permanent Summer Distribution to augment the two winter distributions

We also faced logistical challenges on the site that would have limited the ability of our community to contribute through the food drives or our community donation bin – both of which are key aspects of our success. Finally, a number of discretionary site planning requirements became evident. Meeting these would have drastically and negatively impacted our services.

We are actively pursuing other options for a new Franklin Food Pantry site. The limitations of our current site remain, and our reach has expanded beyond what our current site can do. We are grateful to Rockland Trust for allowing us to continue to operate under their roof – our neighbors rely on us, and them, to access support during difficult times. What we learned through this process is valuable and will be applied to the next site. While this pivot is a temporary change in direction, the strategic decision to move to a new location has not wavered and the project has not lost steam.

For all of those who financially supported our new building campaign, rest assured that it is happening. For all of those who provided your expertise, letters of support, time on our various Committees and continue to be Ambassadors to what we do every day – thank you. We take that commitment to our mission very seriously and will achieve our goal of a new space.

In the meantime, we continue to serve those who need us. Food insecurity isn’t merely a physical struggle, but a social, mental and emotional burden that FFP tries to meet with kindness, grace and humility. We will continue serving, every day, without waver, while we work to secure our new home.
