"150 tons of washed beach sand poured to a depth of 12 inches"

There may not be any surf nearby, but there’s certainly plenty of sand at King Memorial Park in Franklin where the town has paired with a local Eagle Scout to construct a regulation-sized beach volleyball court.
The idea had been talked about for awhile in the Recreation Department office, according to director Ryan Jette, who said Program Director Megan Woodacre, a former collegiate volleyball player and coach, had been looking into what it would take to construct a regulation-size court.
That’s when local teenager Jack Jenkins approached the town with his idea to construct a beach volleyball court as part of his Eagle Scout project.

In the News: Franklin candidates, NE power sources

One new candidate took out papers recently to run for local office, and two have returned their nomination forms with the needed signatures.
Franklin School Committee member John Jewell sought papers to retain his seat on Aug. 21, the most recent candidate to have done so.
Town Council candidate Judith Pond Pfeffer and Board of Health candidate Donald Ranieri Jr., both incumbents, returned papers over the last week. Ranieri's signatures have been certified, and he will be on the ballot.

From 2000 to 2014, Bloomberg said the system’s power has shifted from being generated by coal, nuclear and oil, to natural gas.
In 2000, nuclear energy made up 18 percent of the system’s capacity, or maximum power that can be generated with existing resources. That figure is now down to 15 percent.
Oil made up 34 percent of the system’s capacity, but dropped to 21 percent in 2014.
Coal, the dirtiest fuel in terms of air pollution, dropped from 12 percent to 7 percent capacity, while natural gas, which emits less carbon emissions than any other fossil fuel, increased from 18 percent to 43 percent.
Power from hydro-electric dams and other renewables, including wind and solar, decreased from 11 percent to 9 percent capacity, but Bloomberg said that is mainly due to several hydro plants being shut down.

Shades IN Place: Boy...Oh boy!

The Blind Spot
'Shady' stories in the life of a Brazilian (small) biz owner
August - 2015

I think that August should have 60 days in its month. At least we could enjoy Summer a little longer.... I know I would. Too many things to do before the longer days are gone... Enjoy the short newsletter while at the beach and pay special attention to my newest section at the end called But Before I Go... Hope you'll enjoy!

Boy...Oh Boy!

Last month I wrote about my new working van and how happy I was. Can you believe that, in a little over six weeks, I have driven almost 5,500 miles already? Yeah, between jobs all over the place like Boston, Cape Cod and the Islands, Motorization Courses, Plantation Shutter courses, and a tax-free weekend, our monthly newsletter took a backseat (no pun intended).
I know that you didn't really miss me, as window shades aren't required at the beach. But next month, things are getting back to normal. Sorry for breaking the news that Summer is almost over! (in case you didn't know it).

Before you know it, it will be time for home decorating again and new window treatments. Why not avoid the rush and start thinking about what to do (see photos to inspire) with those large windows in the living and dining room? Perhaps you've been putting off getting those new blackout shades for a better night's sleep in your bedroom? No problem, just call or text my cell phone at 508-904-2108, or shoot me an email to schedule a visit.

But Before I Go....Last Tuesday on August 25th, it was our wedding anniversary. And what better way to celebrate than to bring Ana with me to Nantucket? Now, don't let me fool you...I went there to work, but the install was completed by noon and we enjoyed the rest of the afternoon at the beach appreciating the breeze and the ocean, and took a moment to look forward to many more anniversaries to come!

What I do...

People don't shop for window coverings often. In fact many haven't
bought new shades in 15 - 20 years!

My job is to introduce you to the many wonderful features & benefits
that automated shades have to offer.

As a result you will be able to control privacy, home security (protection) and prevent sun fading via smartphones and tablets whether you are home or away.

The archives come in handy

A question on a Facebook forum on "why the 'general government' line item in the budget for FY 2009 grew about $6M over the prior year?" was one I thought I could answer. I recalled the discussion about moving the Facilities budget from the School side of the ledger to the Town side.

Why the Schools were managing all the Town's facilities (buildings) did not make much sense either then or now.  It had been the way. It got changed in FY 2009. Management of the school custodians moved from the School to the DPW. The line item in the budget moved from the Schools to the Town and has been there relatively unchanged since.

One oddity remains in that while the Town in their budget has all the facilities, the personnel, and the expenses for the maintenance; the one piece that the School budget retains is the Facility Director position and associated salary. It is not good or bad. It is. As long as it is properly accounted for (and it is), then it is okay.

Anyway, part of the answer to the question was found in the budget workshop held in January 2010 which I had recorded. Each recorded segment has links for the associated documents that are referenced. Spend a couple of hours and walk through an explanation of the entire Franklin budget both Town and School including the debt management, stabilization funds, water and sewer operating accounts... The story is all there.

How relevant is it? Well, some of the numbers may have changed since 2010 but the funding model is still the same. The cost drivers are generally still the same.

So step back in time to learn a whole lot that still matters today.

You can find the 2010 posting here but I have re-copied it here to make it easier for you.

Enjoy!

Ice Bucket Challenge comes to Franklin

"It's not typical for us, in that it's for a younger group - most of our events focus on adults," he said. "It's a unique idea - it's the end of summer, kids are going back to school, and we thought it would be a good way to get kids involved."
Greg Sullivan, an assistant baseball coach at Boston College and a friend of Pete Frates, said his older brother, Chris, is a Franklin resident.
"He thought it would be cool - a different dynamic and demographic to spread awareness," he said. "The Ice Bucket Challenge last August was awesome. My niece goes to the Kennedy (Elementary) School, though, and while a lot of friends thought it was hilarious (that) adults were dumping ice water on themselves, they may not have gotten the idea behind it."
Sullivan said, in addition to the typical field day activities, there will be a station where people can take the Ice Bucket Challenge.
