"The artificial intelligence research lab OpenAI on Tuesday launched the newest version of its language software, GPT-4, an advanced tool for analyzing images and mimicking human speech, pushing the technical and ethical boundaries of a rapidly proliferating wave of AI.OpenAI’s earlier product, ChatGPT, captivated and unsettled the public with its uncanny ability to generate elegant writing, unleashing a viral wave of college essays, screenplays and conversations — though it relied on an older generation of technology that hasn’t been cutting-edge for more than a year....In its blog post, OpenAI said GPT-4 still makes many of the errors of previous versions, including “hallucinating” nonsense, perpetuating social biases and offering bad advice. It also lacks knowledge of events that happened after about September 2021, when its training data was finalized, and “does not learn from its experience,” limiting people’s ability to teach it new things.'

National Day of Action to Discredit Bad Banks. Tuesday, March 21 (3.21.23): Activists nationwide are urging customers to move their money away from the "Big Bad Banks" that do most of the lending to fossil fuel corporations. Join 350 Mass' direct action wing Climate Courage for a noon visit to Chase Bank downtown, attack a giant credit card with a chainsaw to the music of a brass band, and inform the public about how banks are funding the climate crisis. Then, march to the nearby Bank of America. Sign up here. For more information and a list of other activities in Greater Boston on that day, see the national website.
Special Greater Franklin Node Meeting (Zoom), Thursday, March 30, 7:00 PM. Hold that date for a presentation and discussion led by Ingrid Geis, 350 Mass member and chair of our Stop and Steer the Money Working Group. The goal is to challenge and disrupt the financial underpinnings of the fossil fuel industry, notably from banks and insurance companies. We need to keep up the protests following the National Day of Action on 3.21.23. Ingrid will discuss how to identify which banks are "dirty" and which are not, what we can do as individual consumers, and examples of actions by groups of citizens. Whether you've attended our meetings or not, this is a good opportunity to learn about 350 Mass in general and this important initiative in particular. Please save the date. We will send out the Zoom link later this month.
To learn about actions and events like these, subscribe to the 350 Mass email newsletter. Also, see the Calendar of Upcoming Events on our website.

EPA proposes updates to PFAS regulations
"The US Environmental Protection Agency has taken the extraordinary step of setting legal drinking water limits for six of the most studied and toxic PFAS compounds, known commonly as “forever chemicals”, that are at the center of an ongoing environmental crisis. The new limits mark the first time in 26 years that the EPA has set legal limits for a contaminant in drinking water. Municipal utilities will be required to remove the compounds from drinking water, which could set off a wave of lawsuits directed at PFAS polluters, including the US military and chemical producers like 3M, DuPont and Chemours. The new rules are “groundbreaking”, said Erik Olson, senior strategic director for the Natural Resources Defense Council non-profit, which tracks PFAS pollution.“We have a five-alarm fire, and setting strong standards will help ensure the fundamental right of every family to have safe water flowing from their kitchen tap,” he said."
