Weather reschedules tennis & softball; doesn't stop baseball from topping Milford on Thursday

Via HockomockSports.com and Twitter, we share the results of the spring sports competition for Franklin High School on Thursday, May 4, 2023. We also provide the link to the full set of Hockomock League results below.

Baseball = Milford, 0 @ Franklin, 10 – Final (6 inn.)
– Locked in a one-run game through 4.5 innings, Franklin’s offense roared to life with a six-run fifth inning followed by three more in the sixth to earn a big win over Milford. The Panthers scored in the first when Eisig Chin reached on an error and Ryan Gerety (walk) scored but the Hawks escaped a bases-loaded situation with no outs to limit the damage. The game stayed 1-0 for the next three innings and Alfred Mucciarone escaped a bases loaded jam for the Hawks, inducing a ground ball to second baseman Luke Sidwell, who started a 4-6-2 double play to end the threat and the inning. Chin ignited the offense again in the fifth with a lead off double, Henry Digiorgio followed with a single and the Panthers’ offense rolled from there. Ethan DePaolo had a big day for Franklin, going 2-for-4 with a double, three RBI, and two runs scored. Ben Jarosz also had a double, an RBI, and two runs for Franklin. Mucciarone got the win, allowed just one hit and one walk, striking out nine in six scoreless innings.

Softball = Franklin @ Milford – Postponed to Wednesday, 5/24 at 3:45.

Boys Tennis = Milford @ Franklin – Postponed to TBD.

Girls Tennis = Franklin @ Milford – Postponed to TBD.

Economic Development Subcmte reviews and sets priorities for remainder of year (audio)

FM #989 = This is the Franklin Matters radio show, number 989 in the series.

This session of the radio show shares the audio recording of the Economic Development Subcommittee held on Wednesday, May 3, 2023 in the Council Chambers with all 4 members participating in the Council Chambers.

Quick recap:

  • Healthy discussion on the next steps for each of the outstanding remaining goals on the list:

    • 40r was the #1 priority for MAPC, within which the specified design standards and dimensional standards (lot coverage, stories, setbacks, etc.) really need to be addressed whether we do 40r or not

    • Shared parking policy (maybe some incentives to entice coordination for private space)

    • Review sidewalk snow removal bylaw (review map put together by Brutus)

    • Research changes to the home occupation business bylaw (interested in but will take time to do properly)

    • Review the marijuana overlay district (some adjustments needed, Kenwood Circle, Amgeo on Washington St, etc.)

    • Review the cell phone tower overlay district and consider a 5G local permitting bylaw (maybe just research required)

Resulting priorities

  1. GR 5 impervious coverage

  2. Cannabis overlay district

  3. Design stuff - Barrette contract product output

  4. Snow removal on sidewalks (Brutus’ map)

The recording of the meeting runs just under 1 hour.

The Empty Bowls Club talks about awareness of food insecurity and how the ceramic bowls help (audio)

FM #984 = This is the Franklin Matters radio show, number 984 in the series.

This session of the radio show shares my conversation with members of the FHS Empty Bowls Club. Brenna Johnson, FHS ceramics teacher, and club advisor. The Empty Bowls students introduce themselves as we around:  Katie Sawyer (President of the Club), Caroline Bruso (Vice-President), Hannah Tory, Samantha Taylor, Annabel Perez-Kocis, and Julia Spanek.

We had our conversation in the ceramics studio where the Empty Bowls are created. Three of the students actively took part in the conversation, three others were busy working on various projects. It is crunch time to get it all done for May 18. We talk about the nature of this event, creating awareness for food insecurity, and making bowls to help remind folks.

Let’s listen to this conversation about Empty Bowls and raising awareness of food insecurity here in Franklin.
