Empowering Teen Wellness: Planet Fitness Announces 6h Annual High School Summer Pass® Program And Opens Its Doors To Teens For Free All Summer Long

Planet Fitness, one of the largest and fastest-growing fitness center operators with more members than any other fitness brand, announced the return of its annual High School Summer Pass® program. Now in its sixth year, the initiative encourages high school teens ages 14 to 19¹ to prioritize fitness this summer by working out for free at any of Planet Fitness’ 2,900+ participating locations throughout the U.S. and Canada. Teens can register today at PlanetFitness.com/SummerPass to gain club access beginning June 1 through August 31. Find the club nearest you here. New this year, the High School Summer Pass® program is powered by Gymshark, the gymwear brand, and all High School Summer Pass® participants will receive an exclusive discount 2 after signing up for the free fitness program.

Planet Fitness has invested more than $460 million in waived membership dues3 to promote youth health and wellness and provide an opportunity for millions of teens to improve their physical and mental health.

“At Planet Fitness, our mission is to break down the barriers to fitness, and the High School Summer Pass® program is a key part of that,” said Colleen Keating, CEO of Planet Fitness. “Young people are increasingly prioritizing their mental and physical health and making fitness part of their daily lives. This program gives teens the unique opportunity to build lifelong healthy habits in a welcoming and non-intimidating environment during the important months when school is out.”

Through the High School Summer Pass® program, teen members will have free access to:
  • Planet Fitness' complete range of strength equipment, including state-of-the-art plate-loaded machines, best-in-class cardio equipment, stretching space and more
  • Free fitness training from certified fitness trainers⁴
  • The free Planet Fitness App, featuring hundreds of on-demand digital exercises
  • A welcoming, non-intimidating community environment
  • Exclusive discounts through Gymshark

To better understand teens and their mental and physical health, Planet Fitness commissioned a nationwide study5 uncovering the following insights:

The Emotional Weight of Being a Teen is Real: Nearly all teenagers (95%) report emotionally or mentally struggling, with more than half (52%) dealing with anxiety and close to half (49%) struggling with a positive body image.

Exercise is One of the Most Powerful Outlets Available: Ninety-five percent of teens say exercise helps them manage life's challenges. Two-thirds (66%) say working out makes them feel proud of themselves, and more than half (53%) say it makes them more confident in who they are.

Strength is Not Just Physical: Planet Fitness knows that strength training not only helps you feel strong and confident, but it also profoundly impacts overall well-being. In fact, ninety-two percent of teens agree that strength training builds confidence, 91% say being strong is just as important as looking good, and 84% say they want to do more strength training.

Cost and Access Are Real Barriers: Seven in 10 (70%) teens report at least one obstacle to working out more, including lack of time (44%), not wanting to spend money (28%) and feeling self-conscious (27%). Nearly half (47%) say they simply cannot afford to make fitness a top priority, yet 83% say they would work out at a gym if it were free.

Building Momentum with Key Partners and Athletes

Gymshark is proud to partner with Planet Fitness this year and provide exclusive discounts to participants to look and feel their best whether before, after, or during a workout.

“At Gymshark, we are all about bringing down barriers to fitness and being there for everyone that embarks on a health journey. The work that Planet Fitness has done and continues to do, encouraging teens to go all in on the gym, could not be more aligned with our brand,” said Calum Watson, Brand Marketing Director at Gymshark. “We can’t wait to see the incredible impact that the High School Summer Pass® will have on so many teens this year.”

To further inspire teens to get active this summer, Planet Fitness is partnering with Olympic legend Allyson Felix and WNBA player Flau'jae Johnson to champion the importance of building healthy habits at a young age and prioritizing overall well-being on their social media accounts.

Planet Fitness locations across the country will host Open House events (check your local club for details) to welcome teens and their families, giving them the opportunity to experience Planet Fitness’ unique Judgement Free environment and meet club team members before the program begins. Planet Fitness will also provide in-club guidance for teen participants, including tips at registration, in-club signage and reminders throughout the app, to ensure a positive and welcoming environment for everyone in the club.

For more information on High School Summer Pass®, including how to sign up for the free summer membership at any of the more than 2,900 Planet Fitness locations in the U.S. and Canada, visit PlanetFitness.com/SummerPass.

Planet Fitness is proud to provide the opportunity for millions of teens across the country to exercise in a safe and welcoming fitness environment during the summer months, further supporting their commitment to mental and physical health.

"We're incredibly proud to see such strong participation from teens across Massachusetts this summer," said Bruce Edwards, CEO of Core Development and Management, a local Planet Fitness franchise group. "The High School Summer Pass program provides a free, safe space for teens to stay active, build healthy habits, and grow their confidence. It's inspiring to see the difference we're making in our communities."

As a result of this year's program alone, Planet Fitness has invested more than $168M  in waived membership dues to promote youth health and wellness and improve the physical and mental health of millions of teens.

A survey conducted by Planet Fitness of more than 6,500 participating teens and 4,400 guardians revealed significant positive outcomes from the 2025 program, demonstrating measurable impact across dimensions of teen development:

  • Building Lifelong Habits: An impressive 93 percent of teen participants report that the program has actively helped them create sustainable health and fitness routines that extend beyond the summer months.

  • Confidence is Climbing: 78 percent of participants report feeling more confident since joining the program, highlighting how a little movement goes a long way.

  • Energy Boost: 80 percent of teens have seen an increase in their energy levels.

  • Meaningful Family Impact: 86 percent of parents report that their teens' participation in the program sparked new, meaningful conversations about health and wellness with their teens.

  • Inspiring Family Fitness: 76 percent of parents report that their teens working out this summer has inspired others in their family to get more physically active.

By investing in teenage wellness, the Company continues to fulfill its mission of enhancing lives through accessible, high-quality fitness experiences.

To better understand what today's teens are experiencing—and how to support them—Planet  Fitness conducted a nationwide study,3 revealing the following key insights:

  • Mental Health is a Major Concern: 66 percent of parents are concerned about their  =teen's well-being and stress levels and 72 percent of parents believe that consistent  exercise can improve their teen's mental wellness. Unfortunately, around three in five  teens report their stress and anxiety are not improving and getting worse as they get  older.

  • Working Out is a Solution: Encouragingly, 90 percent of teens say exercise helps  them feel happy, with 88 percent noting improved mood after exercise.

  • Exercise is More Than Physical Health: Teens believe physical activity helps deal with  emotional ups and downs of being a teenager, 93 percent agree that regular exercise is  beneficial when handling challenges.

  • Screen Time is Consuming: 81 percent of teens acknowledge that social media and  video games take up a significant portion of their day. In fact, nearly four in five teens  report that avoiding social media is helpful.

  • Summer Brings a Fitness Slump: 50 percent of teens report that their fitness levels  tend to decline when school is out for summer break.

"At Planet Fitness, we offer a high value experience to both our members and High School Summer Pass participants in a welcoming, Judgement Free environment where everyone can get a great workout," said Colleen Keating, Chief Executive Officer. "With free access to our clubs throughout the summer, we're providing teens with the tools they need to develop healthy fitness habits that can last a lifetime. "Fitness and training have always been a huge part of my life - not just for competing, but for who I am as a person," said Stephen Nedoroscik, U.S. gymnast and 2-Time Olympic Medalist. "Staying at the top of my game, especially on the pommel horse, takes a ton of focus, discipline, and consistency. I've been lucky to train in places and with people that make me feel supported - and that positive environment makes all the difference. That's why I am excited to team up with Planet Fitness this summer to support their annual High School Summer Pass program. Giving teens free access to a place to move, feel confident, and chase their goals is powerful. It's a chance for young people to discover their strength, inside and out."

PLANET FITNESS' HIGH SCHOOL SUMMER PASS™ RETURNS; TEENS WORK OUT FREE JUNE 1 - AUGUST 31

Planet Fitness, one of the largest and fastest-growing franchisors and operators of fitness centers with more members than any other fitness brand, announces the return of its High School Summer Pass™ program, inviting high school teens ages 14 – 191 to work out for free at any of its 2,500+ Planet Fitness locations across the U.S. and Canada this summer, between June 1 and August 31.

Planet Fitness
Planet Fitness

Starting today (5/20/24), teens can visit https://www.planetfitness.com/summerpass to register for the program before gaining club access starting Saturday, June 1. Teens under the age of 18 in the U.S. and 19 years old in Canada must register with a parent or guardian online or in-club. Since the High School Summer Pass program began, Planet Fitness has invested more than $200 million in waived membership dues to promote youth health and wellness and improve the physical and mental health of millions of teens 2.

The High School Summer Pass program kicks off during Mental Health Awareness Month (May) to help teens prioritize their physical and mental health during a critical time of year when school is out and important academic or extracurricular activities are on pause. In fact, the American Heart Association3 has found that only 25 percent of teens complete the recommended one hour of physical activity per day – and screen time is partially to blame. Research also shows that 9 out of 10 teens agree physical activity improves their overall mental health,4 and a recent Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Pediatrics study4 determined physical fitness among children and adolescents may protect against developing depression, anxiety and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder; afflictions that have direct correlations to the impacts of the COVID pandemic.

"As the leader in fitness with locations throughout the U.S. and Canada, Planet Fitness is proud to continue to invest in today's youth by providing free access to fitness during a critical time in their lives," said Craig Benson, Interim Chief Executive Officer at Planet Fitness. "Many teens continue to be impacted by the long-term mental health impacts from the pandemic, yet studies show that exercise can have a significant, positive impact on teens' overall wellness. We look forward to welcoming High School Summer Pass participants into our clubs to support them in their health and wellness journeys."

FITNESS PROVIDES FREEDOM FROM MENTAL HEALTH OBSTACLES

To understand what is top-of-mind among teens today and better support them over the summer, Planet Fitness commissioned a national study,5 which found the following:

  • Mental Health Is a Source of Worry. 94 percent of teens face emotional and mental health struggles and about four in five (79 percent) of parents have concerns about their teen's mental health. Luckily, 63 percent of teens have found that they feel better about themselves when they exercise, with more than half (53 percent) experiencing a mood boost and feeling more accomplished.
  • Internal Struggles are Real. Three in four teens (72 percent) are self-conscious and confess they struggle with body positivity issues (43 percent), something that's been consistent in year's past.
  • The Moment is Now. 85 percent of teens feel that there's no better time than right now to concentrate on improving their health.
  • Limiting Screen Time. About seven in 10 (70 percent) teens report that staying off social media and their phones (65 percent) helps them cope with the challenges they're facing.
  • Strength Is in The Numbers. Nine in 10 (90 percent) teens feel that exercising with a friend is beneficial to their fitness journey – with others (81 percent) feeling that working out with a parent or sibling, trainer (73 percent), being part of a sports team (69 percent) and following fitness influencers (58 percent) inspires them to be more active.
