"On February 22nd, student athletes will be returning to their cheer, football, volleyball, and winter track seasons after a long wait.

However, MIAA guidelines will be different this season in order to remain safe and socially-distanced.

Indoor facilities such as gyms will only be operating at 40% capacity following the Massachusetts Phase 3, Step 1 guidelines, and spectators at games will be limited to low numbers."

"Our 14U Franklin Cheer team just qualified to compete at the AYFC National Championships in Kissimmee, Florida from December 11-16, 2019. Please help send these girls to their first ever AYC National Championship!!!

Their journey has been long, their effort...tireless, and their desire to be the best can only be topped by their dedication and commitment to “team above self”. This is more than just a competition for these girls. This is the culmination of hours and hours of practice, persistence and sacrifice. Now it’s time to show our support for all their hard work. This trip to National’s will be an experience every single one of them will remember for a lifetime. For some, this will be the first time leaving the New England. For others, this will be the first trip they take with teammates but without their families. Join a Youth Basketball Team (ages 4-11) at the YMCA

We wonder whether the inventor could have known all the good things that would come from basketball when he invented it for the YMCA in 1891. Dr. James Naismith invented the great game of basketball at the International YMCA Training School in Springfield, Mass. Maybe you learned to play basketball at the Y?

With an emphasis on skill development and sportsmanship, the Y offers families an environment where everyone plays and develops.

Enrollment for Youth Basketball Leagues — which starts the weekend of November 30 in Franklin and Foxborough and January 13 in North Attleboro — is now open. Practices will be designed to meet the needs of each coed group, with age appropriate drills and games. Enrollment in the eight week program includes a team t-shirt, practices, and five games. 

Hour-long assignments by age are as follows:
• Saturdays at the Franklin Y: 4 years 10:15 AM; 5–6 years 11:30 AM; 7–8 years 12:45 PM
• Saturdays at the Foxboro Y: 4 years 10:00 AM; 5–6 years 11:15 AM -or- 12:30 PM -or- 3:00 PM;
7-8 years 1:45 PM -or- 3:00 PM
• Fridays at the Foxboro Y: 9-11 years 6:00 PM
• Sundays at the in North Attleboro Y: 4 years 10:30 AM; 5–6 years 11:30 AM; 7–8 years 12:30 PM

This youth program is a great method for developing skills, while experiencing all the sportsmanship and fun that comes from being on a team; it is open to all area residents. Cost is $84 for Hockomock Area YMCA Youth members and $126 for Program members. Family-type Hockomock Area YMCA members receive the leagues experience at no cost, other than uniform fee of $10.

YMCA Youth Sports Leagues Begin September 7

The Y is a great place to learn to love a sport. And YMCA Fall Sports Leagues offer a great means for kids to be connected with others while being active outdoors. Sports teams led by expert staff are enrolling today for children ages 4-14 at the YMCAs located in Foxboro, Franklin, and North Attleboro.

With an emphasis on skill development and sportsmanship, you’re sure to find an environment where everyone plays and develops. The upcoming season runs September 7-October 28, 2018.

The Y soccer league includes three practices and five games, and players will be given a t-shirt and end of season award. The Y NFL flag football also involves three practices and five games, with team jersey provided. The Y beginner cheerleading will introduce girls to basic cheerleading and gymnastics including jumps, tumbling, and cheering.

FHS boys basketball team wins to advance; cheerleaders take D1 South Regional title

Via HockomockSports and Twitter we share the news of the FHS boys basketball playoff game on Sunday, March 4, 2018. 

"All season long, the Franklin boys basketball team has relied on their defense and a balanced scoring attack on their way to the top seed in the D1 Central tournament. On Sunday afternoon at WPI, Franklin stuck to that formula in a 68-54 win over #5 Natick in the D1 Central Semifinals. 

The Panther’s defensive effort was in full force throughout the first quarter, as they limited the Red Hawks to just ten points to take an 18-10 lead. Franklin sophomore Chris Edgehill score seven of his team-high 19 points for Franklin, including a three that beat the buzzer to give Franklin an eight-point advantage heading into the second quarter. 

After Natick’s Will Bodnitzki (nine points, three rebounds) scored with just over four minutes to go in the first half to cut the Franklin lead to 26-17, the Panthers went on a 10-2 run and didn’t give up a field goal to close out the half. Threes from Paul Mahon (13 points, two steals) and Matt Elias (eleven points) highlighted the run that also included two free throws from Jack Rodgers (six points, eight rebounds, three assists) and a basket from Will Harvey (two steals)."

Franklin Pop Warner Little Scholars announced

Good news to share via the Franklin Area Network:

"I wanted to share the recent release of the 2018 Pop Warner Little Scholars. These scholars are being recognized for academic excellence and Franklin has 38 scholars this year, more than any other district in the Hockomock league.

These students are 6-8th graders that must first qualify with a excellent GPA to submit an application where they then have to provide community service and extra circular activity information. I think it speaks so highly of the great job Franklin schools are doing to provide excellence in academics while also producing well rounded students.

These scholars will be honored at an awards banquets in March at Gillette Stadium hosted by the National Pop Warner Organization. "

Winter Leagues start Dec. 2 (for ages 3-11)

As winter approaches and kids anticipate shooting hoops and hustling on the courts, we’re reminded that the sport of basketball was invented by a YMCA institution – nearby in Springfield, MA. Moreover, the game’s first professional team came from a YMCA. Locally, the Hockomock Area YMCA is currently enrolling youth for an active winter of basketball and cheerleading leagues.

Millions of people have been introduced to sports at the Y, and whether your child is just starting, new to team sports, or a regular on the courts, YMCA Sports are worth checking out.

With an emphasis on skill development and sportsmanship, you’ll find an environment where everyone plays and develops. Enrollment for the 8-week season (running December 2-January 27) is now open. Details as follows:

YMCA Basketball and Cheerleading Teams Are Forming

YOUTH BASKETBALL LEAGUE (3–8 YRS)

Practices are developed to meet the needs of each group. The first 3 weeks are devoted to practice and the last 5 weeks to games. Runs for 1 hour, Saturdays @ The Foxboro Y: 4 YRS 10:00am; 5–6 YRS 11:15am, 12:30pm, 3:00pm; 7–8 YRS 1:45pm, 3:00pm. @ The Franklin Y: 3–4 YRS 10:15am; 5–6 YRS 11:30am; 7–8 YRS 12:45pm. And @ The North Attleboro Y: 4 YRS 10:00am; 5–6 YRS 11:00am; 7–8 YRS 12:00pm.

YOUTH BASKETBALL LEAGUE (9–11 YRS)

League play for youth ages 9-11 includes the option of signing up on a weekly basis if you cannot commit to all eight weeks. Runs for 1 hour, Saturdays @ The Franklin Y 1:45pm and @ The North Attleboro Y 1:00pm; runs Fridays @ The Foxboro Y 6:00pm.

Also offered for 3 year olds, Youth Basketball Prep. In this class setting, children will learn skills related to dribbling, passing, shooting, and defense. Includes games designed for that age group based on cognitive and social ability. Runs Saturdays in Foxboro and North Attleboro, 9:00-9:45am.

CHEERLEADING LEAGUE (6-9–YRS)

Learn fun routines and enjoy being part of a team. Girls will cheer at basketball games during the second half of YMCA leagues season. Beginning level, includes jumps and tumbling. Saturdays @ The North Attleboro YMCA 11:00am-12:00pm.
Also offered for younger girls, ages 4-5, at the same location is Cheerleading Prep. This program runs Saturdays 10:00-10:45am.

Team shirt and end of season award will be given to season participants. Cost is as follows. Youth Basketball League: $42 (family-type member), $84 (youth member), $126 (program member) - or – weekly drop in rate (ages 9-11): $11/day (member), $17/day (program member). Cheerleading cost: $57 (family-type member), $114 (youth member), $171 (program member) includes uniform. Prep classes cost: $71 (member), $107 (program member).

In the News: FHS cheer team champions; school security works

"The Franklin High School varsity cheerleading team topped two divisions at a national competition over the weekend. 

Coach Amy Murphy said the squad - participating in the Platinum Nationals competition in Rochester, New York - won the high school division and was the grand champion of the school division. 

“They scored 91.71 out of a possible 95 - they did great,” she said.

"Recent security upgrades helped keep an unwanted visitor out of the Parmenter Elementary School, officials said during an update on school safety this week. 

Superintendent Maureen Sabolinski said a reconfigured entrance - part of ongoing security efforts - kept that person from entering the building. Sabolinski, along with Assistant Superintendent Peter Light, gave a presentation on school safety at Tuesday night’s School Committee meeting. 

Sabolinski said school safety ties in with the district’s recent work with social/emotional learning, especially the idea that students have to be emotionally ready to receive instruction. 

“If students do not feel safe in school, they’re not learning,” she said. “The research is replete with data (showing that).”

"The high school’s varsity cheerleading team is preparing to travel to New York this weekend to take part in a national competition. 

A Tuesday night showcase event celebrated the team as it moved on to the competition, the Platinum Nationals at the University of Rochester. 

Coach Amy Murphy said the squad, which cheers at football and basketball games, had already competed in several levels to qualify for the event. At competitions, she said, the team’s routine is judged on a number of factors, including tumbling and the team’s overall dance motion. 

“In order to max out the score, you have to have all your stunts hit and your transitions have to be precise,” she said."

FHS Mock trail, Drama Club, Cheer and Track team weekend results

Franklin High School had a busy weekend competing in something other than basketball and hockey. 

• The Drama Club got an award for their production of "The Giver" and "Gathering Blue"
• Mock Trail Team won twice to make it to the Elite 8
• Varsity Cheer took second place in the regionals and moves on the State meet
• FHS Girls Track and Field set a school record in the 4x800 to take 3rd in New England. Halle Atkinson also took a 4th place in the 300M run
