Dean College Football to Join MASCAC in 2025

The Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Council of Presidents and Commissioner Angela Baumann are excited to announce the addition of Dean College as a football affiliate beginning during the 2025 season.

Dean will join Anna Maria College, Bridgewater State University, Fitchburg State University, Framingham State University, Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Plymouth State University, UMass Dartmouth, Vermont State University-Castleton, Western Connecticut, Westfield State University and Worcester State University as football programs in the MASCAC.

"The MASCAC and the Council of Presidents are delighted to welcome Dean College to the conference in football," MASCAC Council of Presidents Chair and Salem State University President John Keenan said. "It strengthens our conference footprint and the conference brand. We look forward to enhancing student-athlete opportunities."

"This is a momentous time for the MASCAC as we further solidify our competing teams in the sport of football," Commissioner Baumann said. "We are excited to welcome a Massachusetts team like Dean to the MASCAC and look forward to the kickoff of a long-term football partnership with us beginning in 2025."

"The commission has now officially turned the page. Last month, Health and Human Services Secretary Kate Walsh replaced D’Arcangelo with John Oliveira, a veteran worker whose appointment prompted sustained applause during a staff meeting when it was announced, according to union representatives.

Head of Massachusetts child welfare agency to leave for D.C. advocacy organization

Oliveira, 62, is respected and well liked, said people who fought to oust the previous commissioner, but his appointment alone won’t rebuild an agency that remains plagued with slow service and overwhelming case loads.

“It took a long time for the commission to deteriorate as much as it did,” said Amy Ruell, a Maine-based national advocate for blind people with impaired vision who until recently lived in Massachusetts. “It’s going to take a long time for it to recapture some of its power and service delivery.”

The Franklin TV recording of the information session held Tuesday, Oct 3 at the Franklin Public Library is available.

Tri-County School Committee members Peter Wiernicki and Jen D’Angelo presented, assisted by a Facilities Representative.

• The current school is 'broken', per the MSBA process the building did evaluate options to renovate, renovate & create an addition, or rebuild. The rebuild option was selected as the most viable 

• The cost today is shown as 284M, MSBA will reimburse 29%

• Oct 24, 2023 is scheduled date for approval of the Tri-County school replacement project approval by the 11 community members of the Tri-County district

• The October 24 vote will be conducted across the 11 communities at the same time, from 12 PM to 8 PM. The vote will be counted in aggregate and a 50% +1 is required for passage

• The 11 individual communities can make their own decision on how to fund the expense of the new building. Franklin has chosen to do a debt exclusion to raise the money separately from the operating budget. That vote is schedule for the Nov 7, 2023 election ballot

LGBTQ History Month recognized Oct 22 at First Universalist Society in Franklin

In recognition of October as LGBTQ history month, First Universalist Society in Franklin is pleased to invite all to two opportunities on Sunday October 22, 2023 to honor LGBTQ individuals and allies alike.  

At 10:00 AM, our worship service will focus on the contributions of LGBTQ folk to our religious tradition and society at large. Then from 11:30 AM – 1:30 PM we will view a movie described as a teen romance/comedy. This sweet movie explores teen relationships, connections and the nature of love. Following the 1 hour and 44 minute movie there will be an opportunity for discussion and conversation.

First Universalist Society in Franklin is located at 262 Chestnut Street, Franklin.

FHS field hockey team tops Concord-Carlisle 4-2 on Monday

Via Twitter and our subscription to HockomockSports.com, we share the results of the fall sports competition for Franklin High School on Monday, Oct 9, 2023. 

Field Hockey = Franklin, 4 @ Concord-Carlisle, 2 – Final

– A big first half helped Franklin record an impressive non-league win on the road over Concord-Carlisle. Franklin scored a pair of goals in the first quarter with Chloe Essam opening the scoring at 7:24 off of an assist from Raena Crandall. Crandall took care of the rest of the scoring for the Panthers, netting an unassisted goal at 10:22 of the first and again at 4:02 of the second as Franklin built a 3-0 lead. After the Patriots got one back before half, Crandall completed the hat trick at 14:47 of the third off of a pass form Sawyer Whitmore to give Franklin a 4-1 lead going into the fourth. Devon Barry stood tall in net with 10 saves. “My team played extremely well today,” said Franklin head coach Michelle Hess. “From the forward line all the way back to our stellar defense it was a complete game! Special shout out to Emily Carney, Sophia Cuneo and Haley Wernig for moving the ball and creating our offensive opportunities today.”

An afternoon of Trivia, Fun and Good Cheer at Trivia Tournament - Nov 12

On November 12, 2023, the public is invited to join the Franklin Odd Fellows for an afternoon of Trivia, fun and good cheer from 2 to 4:30 PM at the Bellingham Sportsman Club at 360 Lake St., Bellingham, MA 02019.

The event will consist of teams of up to ten players with a registration cost of just $10 per person, and $15 at the door.  Team pre-registration and payment is encouraged.

This will be our third annual fundraiser that will help us to continue the longstanding tradition of giving back to our local community!  The Bellingham Sportsman Club has worked closely with the Odd Fellows over several past fundraiser projects and continues to be an important partner with our organization.  Thank you BSC!

Get your team of trivia pundits together and register today.  There will be raffle prizes awarded, a silent auction and a cash bar available during the event.
