Fund raising weekend for cancer (photo essay)

As much as cancer is an insidious disease, it is heartening to see the community turn out to support fund raising efforts. There were two separate fund raisers this past weekend. (1) The Relay for Life held at Tri-County Voc Tech and (2) the PMC Kids Ride at the Jefferson School.

Friday evening, we were able to walk between the showers. My wife participated as part of the Oak St Team.

The sun was out and the weather was good for walking and biking Sunday morning. We walked over to the Jefferson School to see the start of the PMC Kids Ride.

Franklin Rotary Club Supports Hockomock Area YMCA’s Annual Campaign

The Franklin Rotary Club presented a check for $2,500 to the Hockomock Area YMCA on June 5, 2014 to support its annual Reach Out for Youth and Families Campaign. Funds raised during this campaign provides local families with access to the services that the Y provides, such as child care, summer camp and sports programs, regardless of their ability to pay.

The Hockomock Area YMCA’s cause is the community and believes everyone should have access to the Y. With the community’s philanthropic support, more than 15,000 individuals, children, and families are able to enjoy a YMCA experience.  

The Franklin Rotary Club started in 1930 and has begun its 84th year of service to the community. Rotary is a worldwide organization of business and professional leaders that provides humanitarian service, encourages high ethical standards in all vocations, and helps build goodwill and peace in the world.

Last day for Kindergarten today

It is that time of year, kindergartners finish today and the remaining classes finish on Friday. Unfortunately, Keller-Sullivan doesn't finish until Monday (6/23) due to a day they missed for a facility problem.

What's going in at the rockpile?

The 'rockpile' near the entrance of Chestnut Ridge as you come into Franklin westbound on RT 140 is undergoing some site prep work. I recall some meetings where it was discussed putting a food market there but had lost track of what was approved. It sat unused and untouched until recently when the construction fences were straightened up, some signs appeared and then earth moving equipment appeared.

As I usually go by the site early in the morning on the weekend, no one is working. I reached out to the Planning and Community Development Dept and received the following answer from Beth Dahlstrom, the Town Planner.

"It is a congregate living facility at 485 East Central Street, approved by the Planning Board on April 22, 2013.  The details of the facility are described in the attached public hearing notice."

In accordance with the Town of Franklin Zoning By-Laws, the Franklin Planning Board will hold a public hearing on Monday, March 25, 2013 at 7:30 PM in the Town Council Chambers of the Franklin Municipal Building, 355 East Central Street, for a Site Plan application titled “Franklin Retirement Residence” dated March 6, 2013, prepared by Midpoint Engineering & Consulting and submitted by Lenity Group, LLC, 3159 Kettle CT, SE, Salem, OR 97301. The site is approximately 9.51 acres and is located at 485 East Central Street in the Commercial II Zoning District (Assessor’s Map 284 Lot 006). The applicant is proposing to build a 136-unit congregate living facility for seniors who are still ambulatory but in need of some support. The proposed building design includes wing ends and a building center that steps down from 3-, to 2- to 1-story; in addition, there are 87 parking spaces proposed, landscaping, drainage and associated infrastructure.

You may recall that the Dave Matthews Band was helping the Food Pantry. How much help did they provide?

This year, Lynch said, the pantry convinced Reverb to invite Hoffmann Farm, run by Nick Hoffmann, who started his community-supported agriculture program anew in 2012 after moving to Franklin from New Braintree. 

At the show last Saturday, the pantry and the farm had two booths set up in the concourse. The pantry collected more than 500 pounds of food and $2,400 to purchase produce from Hoffmann. 

And both were able to get some exposure, as thousands of people attended the show.

What will the $2,400 be used for?
The Food Pantry already purchases some Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) shares from Hoffman Farms to provide fresh produce to our neighbors. These funds will either add to this program for this year or next year. The Hoffman Farm is located on Daniels St in Franklin.
