In the News: Supreme Court to hear arguments in census citizenship question

"The Supreme Court says it will hear arguments over the evidence a federal judge can consider in the lawsuit concerning the addition of a citizenship question to the 2020 census. 

U.S. District Judge Jesse M. Furman is currently presiding over a trial in New York to determine if Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross acted legally when he decided to include the citizenship question on the decennial census for the first time since 1950. 

That trial is expected to conclude soon. The justices set arguments for Feb. 19 and it is unclear whether Furman would delay his ruling until after the Supreme Court decides the case. 

The high court had previously allowed the trial to go forward, rejecting a Trump administration request to delay it."

US Census: Now hiring for the 2020 Census

The U.S. Census Bureau is recruiting thousands of workers for temporary jobs available nationwide in advance of the 2020 Census.

The 2020 Census Jobs website allows applicants to apply for a range of positions, including recruiting assistants, office operations supervisors, clerks, census field supervisors and census takers. The positions will be located across 248 Area Census Offices nationwide and offer flexible work hours, including daytime, evenings and weekends.

Available jobs:

• Recruiting assistants travel throughout geographic areas to visit with community-based organizations, attend promotional events and conduct other recruiting activities.
• Office operations supervisors assist in the management of office functions and day-to-day activities in one or more functional areas, including payroll, personnel, recruiting, field operations and support.
• Clerks perform various administrative and clerical tasks to support various functional areas, including payroll, personnel, recruiting, field operations and support.
• Census field supervisors conduct fieldwork to support and conduct on-the-job training for census takers and/or to follow-up in situations where census takers have confronted issues, such as not gaining entry to restricted areas.
• Census takers work in the field. Some field positions require employees to work during the day to see addresses on buildings. Other field positions require interviewing the public, so employees must be available to work when people are usually at home, such as in the evening and on weekends.

US Census: Now hiring for the 2020 Census

Franklin Public Schools: 2 hour delay - Friday, Nov 16

We have been assessing the situation at our schools and across town early this morning. As a result of last night's snowfall, we will have a 2 hour delay on Friday, November 16, 2018.

When Franklin Public Schools has a delayed opening, ECDC will have a cancellation/delayed opening as follows:

The ECDC morning session will be cancelled. The ECDC extended and full day sessions will delay opening by 2 hours. The delayed opening will NOT impact the afternoon session.

As a result of lingering snow on sidewalks, emergency busing will be in effect and students walking to or from school will be offered rides by our drivers.

The District's office will open on time.

THE BLACK BOX Classical Series presents Quartett Giocosa in collaboration with pianist Irina Kotlyar on Sunday, November 18 at 4 pm. Violinists Heather Goodchild and Irina Fainkichen are joined by Irina Naryshkova on Viola, cellist Elizabeth Schultze, and Irina Kotlyar on Piano to perform the E flat Major Quintet, Op.44 by Robert Schumann and the Quintet in A Major, Op.81, by Antonin Dvorak. Cocktails and tea will be available. Quartett Giocosa was formed in 2017. The quartet players met years ago at the Cape Symphony, where they are all members.

Collectively, the members of QG have played with master musicians including Yo-Yo Ma, Joshua Bell, Mstislav Rostropovich, Anne Sophie Mutter, Mark O’Connor, Wynton Marsalis and Sarah Vaughan. They have worked under the leadership of conductors such as Christoph Eschenbach, Michael Tilson Thomas, Jane Glover, Lorin Maazel, Seiji Ozawa, and the incomparable Jung-Ho Pak and have played with orchestras including the Bergen Philharmonic, the Royal Danish Orchestra, the Atlanta and Oklahoma Symphonies, the Boston Lyric and Chicago Opera Companies and the Upsala Chamber Orchestra.

Irina Kotlyar, born in Kharkov, Ukraine, earned her degrees from Rubin Academy of Music. With Gregory Shifron, the Kotlyar-Shifrin Piano duo has won several International prizes and awards, including the Murrey Dranoff International Two Piano Competition (1999, Miami,) and an International competition in Poland (1999), and has performed throughout Israel, Europe and America.

"At Noelle Day Spa and Salon, there’s no need for a lawn to have a yard sale. 

After the business’ recent remodel, owner Noelle Carpenter noticed she had a lot of extra stuff to get rid of. Carpenter determined that many of the items were still in good condition, so she figured out a way to help a good cause. 

“Instead of throwing all this extra stuff we had away or selling it, we thought, ‘Why don’t we just put everything in this room and give the money to charity?’” she said. 

The money will be going to JDRF, an organization dedicated to research on Type 1 diabetes, a cause close to her own heart."

Lifelong Community Learning: Winter Registration Opens December 1

Registration opens on December 1st for the 2019 winter session at Lifelong Community Learning. Beginning in January and February, winter courses will provide opportunities to exercise, dance, and paint. 

Sports offerings will include – badminton, basketball, and volleyball; or join our Football and Coffee class, just in time for the playoffs. You can also enjoy food demonstrations and tastings or explore the Italian language. 

We even have a class in digital photography as well as financial planning. It’s all here…so many opportunities and all reasonably priced.

And once again this winter we are pleased to announce new opportunities in our Kids’ Corner program … a place where fun and learning meet. This program is a unique collection of after-school activities for children with the goal of making learning fun. Classes are small, relaxed and designed to encourage children’s creativity. MassBudget: Proposed "public charge" rule may stoke anxiety among current citizens as well as immigrants

November 14, 2018 Proposed "public charge" rule may stoke anxiety among current citizens as well as immigrants Our country has long welcomed and valued immigrants. But a "public charge" rule proposed by the Trump Administration could fundamentally change the nation's approach to immigration and could cause families to avoid or withdraw from necessary public benefits. In its new brief, A Chilly Reception: Proposed Immigration Rule Creates Chilling Effect for New Immigrants and Current Citizens, the Massachusetts Budget and Policy Center (MassBudget) examines how Massachusetts might be affected by the proposed public charge rule. This rule would require immigrants applying for legal permanent residence (a "Green Card") to demonstrate that they have not, do not, and will not likely receive any of a list of publicly-funded benefits, including MassHealth (Medicaid) and SNAP ("food stamps"). Potentially 500,000 people in Massachusetts could withdraw from needed benefits out of fear or confusion about this rule that has not yet gone into effect. Of these, 160,000 are children, most of whom are U.S. citizens and not even directly affected by this proposed rule. The proposed rule could directly affect people applying for a Green Card (or permanent residence), but similar standards would also apply to those seeking to extend a non-immigrant visa or change their temporary non-immigrant status in the U.S. (such as from a student visa to an employment visa). Currently, the public charge determination only assesses whether an immigrant will rely primarily on government benefits for financial support. By contrast, the proposed new rule would require applicants to demonstrate that "they have not received, are not currently receiving, nor are likely in the future to receive public benefits," and the proposed rule would also significantly expand the list of public benefits taken into consideration when assessing whether someone might be deemed a "public charge." Reports indicate the "chilling effect" of this proposal has even reached immigrants on programs not on this list of potentially affected benefits.
