Tri-County Early Education Students Visit Boston University Wheelock College Exhibit

Early Education students at Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School visited the Wonder of Learning: The Hundred Languages of Children Exhibit. The exhibit was held at Boston University Wheelock College of Education and Human Development, hosted by Wonder of Learning Boston (WOL Boston). This was a rare and valuable opportunity for Tri-County students to experience the exhibit, which travels throughout the country and has not been hosted in Boston for decades.

The Hundred Languages of Children is the basis of the Reggio Emilia approach, a model of early education that originated in Reggio Emilia, Italy, in the 1940s. The Reggio philosophy views children as having one hundred languages - or one hundred ways - through which they can express themselves. The approach is considered one of the best educational systems in the world for children from birth through age five, including principles of curiosity, interaction, problem-solving, and experiential learning. (WOL Boston).

The students were guided through the exhibit by Professor Emerita Mary Mindess of Lesley University. Professor Mindess encouraged students to immerse themselves in the exhibit in order to appreciate its richness. When students were finished exploring the exhibit, they engaged in a round table discussion with Professor Mindess, during which they examined the ways in which Reggio principles can be incorporated into their work with the children and shared their thoughts.

After working with Tri-County students, Professor Mindess had this message: "To the students at Tri-County, who were engaged, reflective and clearly thinking about the 'Wonder of Learning', it was a pleasure working with you and hearing about all the ways that the Wonder of Learning Exhibit has inspired you."

The students returned to Tri-County inspired to incorporate the Reggio Approach into their work with the children at the Tri-County Children's Center, the laboratory preschool at Tri-County. As Nate Anderson, a junior, explained, "It was inspiring and it opened my eyes a bit to the different philosophies of learning. It will help me to become a better teacher."

Hope Bassignani, also a junior, added, "It was a great experience and I learned a lot. I liked looking at all the activities for preschool children."

"Tri-County Early Education students are teachers in training who create developmentally appropriate activities, identify goals and objectives that support development across all domains, and implement their plans with the children of Tri-County Children's Center", said Lisa Oxford, Early Education teacher. "We were grateful to be able to provide this professional development opportunity for our students, and we are confident that their participation in this exhibit will further enrich their work with our preschool children."

This podcast is my public service effort for Franklin but I can't do it alone. I can use your help.

How can you help?

In particular, if you have an interest in real estate, zoning or construction, I would like someone to follow the Planning Board, Zoning Board of Appeals and Conservation Commission meetings. I’ll provide the guidance on note taking and sharing. You need to bring an inquisitive and open mind and willingness to learn and share.

Overall:
  • If you can use the information that you find here, please tell your friends and neighbors.
  • If you don't like this, please let me know.

Through this feedback loop we can continue to make improvements.
Thank you for listening.

In the News: Pine St closure coming; Hollywood filming movie here

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:
"The Department of Public Works is warning residents that a section of road on Pine Street leading to Bellingham will soon be closed due to construction.
The $55,000 project to replace a culvert pipe will occur over about a three-week period starting Monday, but the road will be closed to public traffic all the way to the Bellingham border.
Deacon Perotta, director of operations at the Franklin DPW, said the repair is necessary to make sure there are no flooding issues in the area.
“We have a road problem there,” he said. “Basically, the culvert underneath the road has become impacted because of its age.”

"People in Franklin could possibly catch a glimpse of stars over the next week or so, and they’re not the ones in the sky.
Town Administrator Jeff Nutting has confirmed that Hollywood is in town finishing up the latest iteration of “Little Women,” due out next December. The secured set is at an undisclosed location in the Forge Park industrial area and is closed to visitors.
One of the stars said to be doing final work on the film is silver screen legend Meryl Streep, who is playing the role of Aunt March in the famous Louisa May Alcott story. Also said to be doing work here is A-lister Emma Watson, who first rose to fame as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter movies. She plays the role of Meg March.
A producer for the film did not return calls for more information."

recap of items mentioned during subcommittee meeting

Pellegri - ditto to everything Kelly said
assistants need to be developed for these roles

Hamblen - we're looking for a candidate with the best qualifications to fulfill the spot, Jamie gets Franklin, he has been around, volunteering even on the decoration effort recently

Jones - there is a logical path, some sense for what we do. When he was hired three years ago, he has worked closely with us, this is a person who is ready willing and able to make Franklin better.

Padula - you have to earn this job, we are absolutely spoiled with the best in Jeff Nutting, people want to emulate Franklin, applaud this search committee for making this decision. He has a great attitude, he gets it. He has been on a three year job interview. I think we are through that and he fits the bill for us. I want this because he will make our job easier.

Dellorco - commend you for making this decision, it wasn't handed to him. He has got to be the best guy, I have been on the council 8 years, and I never call Jeff anymore, I call Jamie.

Earls - I have been impressed with his professionalism and wide range of experience; apprenticeship the last three years

Mercer - on the search committee this gave me some insights to what is out there. Three years ago, I was part of the committee that has hired Hellen. He has been mentored by the best and has done a great job. I am looking for someone who cares. Jamie cares about the community.
