This session of the radio show shares the special combination of “Talk Franklin” with Town Administrator Jamie Hellen, and Town Council Quarterbacking with Chair Tom Mercer. 

Talk Franklin was on the schedule for Friday, and given the double meeting of the Town Council for the budget hearings, it made sense to cover our Town Council Quarterbacking session after both public hearings, hence combining them together.

Lily Rivera, Marketing & Communication Specialists joins us on the Friday before the Memorial Day weekend to recap the budget, town state of affairs and look out to the near term events coming in June, Farmers Market opens June 3rd, and then the Strawberry Festival and the Franklin For All booth on June 10 kicks off ArtWALK and the Ladybug Trail.

Elects New Chair of Board 

 

 

The Franklin Food Pantry (FFP) announced two new members to its Board of Directors. Community Members Rachel Flum and Judith Perez have joined the FFP Board to further its mission to provide immediate hunger relief and healthy sustainable solutions to neighbors within the Franklin area. Additionally, Board members will guide The Pantry's evolution of programing and services as it plans its relocation to 341 W Central St. Franklin, MA. Board member Chris Kilburn will now serve as Chairperson. Former Interim Chair, Jim Roche will continue to serve as Treasurer, and Suzanne Gendreau will continue her role as Clerk.  

"Both Rachel and Judith bring valuable skillsets to our board. Rachel has deep experience advocating for policy change to improve the economic well-being of low and modest-income people.  Judi's experience in fitness and wellness and her deep ties to some of the most vulnerable in our community are critical in guiding us as we look to better serve our neighbors," said Franklin Food Pantry Executive Director Tina Powderly. "Chris Kilburn joined our board last year and provides strong leadership and operational planning. He brings the same skills to FFP that he did to his many leadership roles at Fidelity Investments: program management, team building, and keen business and mission focus. We are lucky to have Chris' time and dedication as we move forward with our location change and advancement programs. I'd also like to express our sincere thanks to Jim Roche who served double duty as Interim Chair and Treasurer before the Board appointed Chris."  

Franklin Food Pantry Adds Two New Board Members

Rachel Flum is the former Executive Director of the Economic Progress Institute in Rhode Island where she conducted several legislative campaigns, including paid family leave, SNAP, revenue-raising, and childcare assistance, while working closely with EPI's Board and leading its staff. In this role, she was also responsible for the strategic direction and fund development activities of the organization. Rachel received the Forty Under Forty Award in 2015. Rachel is a graduate of Wellesley College and Georgetown University Law School and has lived in Franklin for 18 years. She served on the Board of Directors of Sunrise Montessori School in Franklin and on the Vestry for Trinity Episcopal Church in Wrentham. 

Judith Perez is a member of the Franklin Freedom Team, a group of community leaders whose mission is to preserve freedom through unity in the community. She brings years of wellness experience to the pantry, most recently running exercise and fitness programs for community members and The Sunshine Club at the Franklin Senior Center. For the past ten years, she has offered integrated fitness and enrichment programs for Kennedy Donovan Center, Behavior Concepts, Inc. Riverside, Hockomock Area YMCA, Garelick Early Learning Center, Bellingham High School, Atria/Enclave, Magnolia Heights, and Senior Centers in Franklin, Bellingham, Medway, and Millis. Judith received her Associate of Science in Sports Fitness and Exercise Science from Dean College, her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Dean College, and her Certification in Early Childhood Education from Dean College. She has lived in Franklin for 17 years with her daughter and before moving to Franklin, owned a catering business in New York City. 

About the Franklin Food Pantry   

The Franklin Food Pantry offers supplemental food assistance and household necessities to almost 1,100 individuals per year. The Franklin Food Pantry is not funded by the Town of Franklin. As a private, nonprofit organization, we depend on donations from individuals, corporations, foundations and other strategic partners. We are grateful for our many partnerships, including that with the Greater Boston Food Bank, that allow us to achieve greater buying power and lower our costs. Donations and grants fund our food purchases, keep our lights on, and put gas in our food truck. Other programs include home delivery, Weekend Backpack Program for Franklin school children in need, mobile pantry, emergency food bags and holiday meal packages. The Pantry is located at 43 W. FREE Adult Paint Night, Thursday, June 9, 7-9 PM

"Expressions is collaborating with the Town of Franklin and the Mass Cultural Council to offer this free event. This will be an adult paint night taught by Toni Carbone. 

Toni teaches a meditative painting practice that uses sacred symbols and a super easy layering painting process that activates the right side of your brain which brings your whole being into a new state of balance. 

In this class, Toni will take us on a painting journey. We will do a short meditation and then we will be guided through the layers as we paint our own mandala which is an ancient symbol that encourages introspections and awareness that allows for peace of mind."

"This is a drop off class. We are collaborating with the Town of Franklin and the Mass Cultural Council to offer this free event. Dana Matthews, local Franklin artist, will be teaching this paint on canvas class for children in grades K-6.

students to be in touch with feelings that many times words cannot express. She will encourage them to create landscape scenes that can allow them to feel empowered and with the use of vibrant colors and being one with nature."

Strawberry Stroll, Ladybug Trail, ARTWALK and Second Sunday Speaker Series all in one weekend at the Historical Museum!

The Franklin Historical Museum plans a busy June weekend beginning with a special Friday night opening June 10. In conjunction with the Franklin Downtown Partnership the museum will be open from 4 PM - 8 PM during the annual Strawberry Stroll celebration. The much anticipate Ladybug Cultural & Historical Trail will be dedicated that evening, on Main Street, as well.  

Stop by the museum to visit two points of interest on the trail, the Delegates Ladybug, which tells the story of the Ladybug becoming our ‘state insect’. And the Straw Hat Sculpture, sitting happily on the museum’s front lawn, which is a nod to the once thriving straw industry in our town. Learn a bit about the 2nd grade Kennedy School class that went to the State House and learned about the legislative process of making a new state law.

Saturday morning, June 11 the LiveARTS string quartet performs at 10:30 AM as part of the Franklin ArtWALK Celebration sponsored by the Franklin Cultural District. Events around town during this 3-day celebration include live performances, art exhibits, family activities, a kick off reception and more. The Franklin Historical Museum is proud to once again host one of the many live performances for this event. For more information on the ArtWALK schedule visit www.franklinculture.org. 

Rounding off this busy weekend is our Second Sunday Speaker Series with a presentation on the 150 year history of the Franklin Fire Department as they commemorate their founding in 1872. Fire photographs from the Stanley Chilson collection will be on display, and a presentation of interesting facts and figures recounting the early years from hand drawn pumper wagons, to horse drawn pumper wagons to today’s finest and fastest rescue apparatus. Do you know when our first fire station was built? Do you know which prominent Franklin citizen of his day funded the building that served our town for so many years? Do you remember the fire whistle signals? Join us and take a look back at the changes the years have brought to the Franklin Fire Department.  Doors open at 1:00pm and the presentation will start at 1:15. 

Admission is always free and we are ADA accessible. 

Be sure to visit our gift shop which is run by the Friends of the Franklin Historical Museum.

Town of Franklin Memorial Day ceremony - 05/30/22 (audio)

This session of the radio show shares the audio of the Town of Franklin Memorial Day ceremony held on the Town Common at the end of the parade on Monday, May 30, 2022. The day was gloriously sunny and the crowd was mostly finding shade and in good voice when required.

Veterans Service Officer Shannon Nisbett is the master of ceremonies.

Franklin Police to Participate in Accreditation Assessment

Chief Lynch is pleased to announce that a team of assessors from the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission is scheduled to arrive on June 22, 2022, to begin examining various aspects of the Franklin Police Department’s policies and procedures, operations and facilities.  

Verification by the Assessment Team that the Department meets the Commission’s standards is part of a voluntary process to gain state Accreditation -- a self-initiated evaluation process by which police departments strive to meet and maintain standards that have been established for the profession, by the profession.

The Massachusetts Police Accreditation Program consists of 257 mandatory standards as well as 125 optional standards.  In order to achieve accreditation status, the Department must meet all applicable mandatory standards as well as 60% of the optional standards.  

Achieving Accreditation is a highly prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence.  Anyone interested in learning more about this program is invited to contact Chief Lynch or the Department’s Accreditation Manager, Deputy Chief James West.

Franklin Public Library News & Events for June 2022

Library Hours

The Franklin Public Library will be closed Monday, June 20th for Juneteenth (observed). The Library’s regular hours are Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday and Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Sunday 1:30-5:00 p.m. The Library will be open on Sundays in June, but closed in July and August.

Book Sale

• Franklin Library Book Sale -  Friday, June 24th ,  1:00 - 5:00 PM.  Saturday, June 25th , 9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon. All books are just one dollar!
• Bag Sale - $5 A Bag—Saturday, June 25th , from 1:00-4:00 PM Come fill a brown bag with all the books you can!

From the Friends… We have two great recaps we wanted to share with the Franklin Public Library community. The first, a focus on the incredible library staff and the next a recent author event sponsored by the Friends.

APRIL News: “Thank you, have a great day.” These words are uttered countless times throughout the day by the staff at our Franklin Public Library.

I think we can all agree, the team is always gracious and there to help you find a new book, offer a recommendation or point you to where tummy time is being held. For all they do to keep our library going and provide enrichment programs to our community, we wanted to say thank you and help them start their day off right. In honor of National Library Week, the Friends of the Franklin Library celebrated the library staff with some tasty treats and a special raffle as a small token of our appreciation.

We encourage all patrons of the Franklin Public Library to take a moment the next time you’re there to share a favorite memory or give a simple thanks to those who make our library so wonderful. And to the staff, allow us to once again say: thank you for all that you do!

MAY News: On May 12, the Friends sponsored an in-person author event with award-winning author/journalist Nancy Rubin Stuart who discussed and signed copies of her newest book, Poor Richard’s Women: Deborah Read Franklin and the Other Women Behind the Founding Father.  Attendees enjoyed a lively discussion about her book and the research that allowed the story to come to life. Thank you to all who attended, we hope you walked away with a new appreciation for women like Deborah Read Franklin. The Friends of the Franklin Library are always happy to support initiatives such as this one to further enrich our community and benefit all of our Library patrons.
