"a very ambitious undertaking, simplistic in concept but very difficult in execution"

"THE BAKER ADMINISTRATION on Wednesday released a 168-page climate plan for 2050that follows the same general playbook that’s been outlined in the past – increase production of clean electricity; use that electricity to electrify the energy-intensive transportation, building, and industrial sectors; and achieve net-zero emissions by removing additional carbon from the atmosphere using natural and engineered approaches.
The state’s goal for 2050 is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 85 percent compared to 1990 levels, and achieve the net-zero target by removing additional emissions from the atmosphere.
It’s a very ambitious undertaking, simplistic in concept but very difficult in execution. The climate plan wrestles with all the variables, and comes to some tentative conclusions."

Senate President Karen Spilka: Happy Holidays! The 192nd Legislative Session in Review

Senate President Karen Spilka
Updates from Beacon Hill & MetroWest

Happy Holidays!

Happy Holidays!

The hustle and bustle of the holiday season are finally upon us and with it comes an opportunity to reflect on the year gone by and plan for the year ahead. We have so much to be thankful for: our family, friends, neighbors, and community. This season, I am thankful for your support and what we've accomplished together.

As we begin 2023—and a new two-year legislative session—I am looking forward to continuing to work with my colleagues in the Senate and all of you to build a strong, inclusive, innovative and compassionate Commonwealth.

From my family to yours, I wish you a happy and healthy holiday season.

As always, my office is available if you need assistance or wish to share your opinion. You can email me at karen.spilka@masenate.gov or call 617-722-1500.

Warm regards,

Reflecting on the last two years

As 2022 comes to a close, so too does the 192nd Legislative Session of the Massachusetts General Court, our state's legislature.

The 2021-2022 Legislative Session proved to be a historic and exciting time as the Massachusetts State Senate works to address the challenges affecting every one of us.

As our state continues to recover from the public health and economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, we continued to deliver relief to workers, families, and small businesses, centering them in our strategy to promote an equitable recovery for all.

In response to worrying trends at the national level, we expanded Massachusetts residents' access to voting, protected our right to receive reproductive or gender-affirming healthcare, and be safe from gun violence. We also passed two major bills, now law, aimed at combatting climate change, positioning Massachusetts as a leader in this fight.

Of course, no reflection on the last two years would be complete without celebrating passage of my priority issue, bringing long overdue reform to our mental and behavioral health care delivery system and ensuring that everyone can get the mental health care they need, when they need it.

With the signing of the Mental Health ABC Act 2.0 into law in August 2022, all residents will soon be guaranteed a free mental health assessment, we will have tools to enforce parity for mental health coverage and we will take significant steps toward addressing the emergency room boarding crisis. And having spoken with representatives from the White House who believe that our mental health care reform bill can and will serve as model legislation for the United States, I am grateful to know that we will be providing hope for the entire nation.

Our state has an important role to play as a national leader and a beacon of hope to so many. I look forward to tackling the challenges that the new session will bring.

Highlights of the 192nd Legislative Session

Below, are just a few of the most prominent issues which my colleagues and I in the Massachusetts State Senate addressed in the 2021-2022 Legislative Session. You can read more about all of these in the Senate's Session Report.

FHS boys basketball tops Foxboro on Tuesday

Via HockomockSports.com and Twitter, we share the results of the fall sports competition for Franklin High School on Tuesday, December 20, 2022. We also provide the link to the full set of Hockomock League results below.

Boys Basketball = Foxboro, 51 @ Franklin, 77 – Final

Ryan Lanigan, founder and Editor-in-Chief of HockomockSports.com, provides the game recap ->
"The Franklin boys basketball team had their foot on the gas throughout the first half. The Panthers slammed the pedal down in the second half.
Junior Sean O’Leary poured in 16 of his career-high 26 points in the third quarter and the Panthers turned a single-digit halftime lead into a runaway win over visiting Foxboro, 77-51.

The Panthers transitioned a strong defensive effort into some easy buckets, getting out and running and attacking the basket early in the shot clock to balloon the nine-point halftime lead up to 21 points going into the fourth quarter.

“I thought the pace of the game was much improved for us in the second half,” said Franklin head coach CJ Neely, now in his ninth year at the helm of the Panthers. “We played into the halfcourt with them a little too much in the first half but we’re better when we’re playing with pace and sharing the basketball. I thought we amped it up and it started with our defense. We made a couple of adjustments, we had to switch how we were guarding the ball screens and the blur cuts, and once we made that switch, we stopped [Ryan LeClair] from going downhill and that took away some of their shooting. Once we got stops, we were able to get out and run.”

Girls Basketball = Franklin, 50 @ Foxboro, 55 – Final
– Camryn Collins scored 20 points for the second straight game and Foxboro rallied from 11 points down in the second half to end Franklin’s 44-game league win streak. The first quarter was tight, as both teams came out firing. Collins had 10 of Foxboro’s 16 and Katie Peterson had 11 of Franklin’s 15. The Panthers locked down in the second, holding Foxboro to just two points to go into the locker room leading 27-18. Foxboro rallied early in the third, cutting the lead to just two, but then Franklin put together a run to extend the lead out to as many as 11. Sasha Tracey knocked down a pair of threes for the Panthers and had all six of her points in the quarter. Down nine heading to the final eight minutes, the Warriors found another gear on both ends of the floor and pulled out a 25-11 fourth quarter to secure the victory. Kailey Sullivan caught fire and scored 10 of her 12 points in the fourth, while Ava Hill added three of her seven and Collins scored seven points in the frame, including a clutch pull-up jumper to put Foxboro in front. Peterson would finish with 19 for the Panthers, 15 of them in the first half, and Lizzie Newman scored seven points.
