New York Times: "How Restaurant Workers Help Pay for Lobbying to Keep Their Wages Low"

More Perfect Union (@MorePerfectUS) tweeted  on Tue, Jan 17, 2023:

"NEW: The NY Times reveals that low-wage restaurant workers have been unknowingly funding the industry's powerful lobbying arm, the National Restaurant Association, as it worked to kill minimum wage increases around the country.

Here's how the scheme works: "
https://twitter.com/MorePerfectUS/status/1615379667825065986

"In 2007, the restaurant lobby (sometimes called "the other NRA") bought ServSafe, an online food safety training company.

It then lobbied states to require restaurant workers to take those trainings, producing a reliable stream of paying customers."
https://twitter.com/MorePerfectUS/status/1615379959824134145

"Since 2010, 3.6 million workers have paid for ServSave courses, providing $25 million to the NRA—enough to fund all of its lobbying costs, the Times found.
The funding extracted from everyday workers dwarfs the amount that some of the NRA's large corporate donors provide."   https://twitter.com/MorePerfectUS/status/1615382543385202688

350 Mass Greater Franklin Node, Virtual Meeting, Thursday, January 19, 7:00 PM

Hello once again from the 350 Mass Greater Franklin Node. Our meeting this week (third Thursday of the month) will be on Zoom, this Thursday, January 19, starting at 7:00 pm.

Zoom link for the meeting, Thursday, January 19, 7:00-8:30 pm.

Meeting ID: 889 2460 7755
Passcode: 350ma
Dial-in +1 646 876 9923

Twice-a-month, our Node, one of more than fifteen such 350 Mass groups throughout the state, holds its meetings, via Zoom. Our Node's participants come from Franklin and several towns ranging north to Sharon and south to Attleboro. You are always welcome to attend, to learn about climate and energy, politics and science, to hear about opportunities for action, and to contribute to our goals in a way that works for you.

Our meetings address ongoing challenges and actions related to energy and climate. Our typical agenda includes: discussion of climate and energy developments locally, across the state, and nationally. Announcements about planned advocacy and protest actions organized by 350 Mass and other groups. And plans for activities in our Greater Franklin region. Our tone and manner are collegial and neighborly. We hope to meet you one of these Thursdays. Or you can reply to this message; we'll follow up.

350 Mass is developing our next statewide campaigns for 2023-24. Two virtual Town Hall meetings are scheduled, for Monday, January 23, and Sunday, February 5. Whether you're a long time 350 Mass member or someone looking to get involved, you are invited to join these Town Hall Meetings. Your insight is critical to selecting the most impactful campaign(s)! Learn more about these and other events on the 350 Mass Events page.

We hope you receive 350 Mass' Climate Weekly email. It's a good way to keep up with key issues and actions on their behalf. You can sign up here.

We will send a reminder about the Node's meeting on Thursday.

Thank you.

Both FHS girls and boys basketball teams post wins vs. Canton on Tuesday

Boys Basketball = Canton, 52 @ Franklin, 57 – Final
– The Bulldogs battled hard on the road and kept pace with top-ranked Franklin but the Panthers ultimately hung on for a hard-fought win. Canton came to play from the jump, building a 14-12 lead after a quarter but Franklin fought back in the second including five points from sophomore Caden Sullivan, who was making his season debut. Junior Sean O’Leary got it going in the second half for the Panthers, scoring 14 of his team-high 18 points after the break. Carrying a 39-35 lead into the fourth, Bradley Herndon and Justin Allen hit key threes to keep Franklin ahead. Ben Harvey added 10 points for Franklin. Girls Basketball = Franklin, 47 @ Canton, 41 – Final
– Franklin avoided a big upset on Tuesday and moved into a first-place tie with Attleboro ahead of Friday’s showdown. Canton jumped out to a 14-9 lead after one. Mercia Kolokithas buried a pair of threes and Emily McCabe had one in the first to help the Bulldogs grab the early advantage. The Panthers were able to cut the deficit to one before halftime, but managed only 18 points in the opening 16 minutes. Franklin would grab a one-point lead in the third. Katie Peterson scored six of Franklin’s 12 points to make it 30-29 going to the fourth. In the final eight minutes, Franklin’s offense finally clicked and the Panthers scored 17 points. Peterson added four more, finishing with a team-high 17, and Chloe Fales added five of her 10 points. Samya DaSilva scored four of her five points in the fourth to help keep Canton close. Town of Franklin begins planning to update the Open Space and Recreation Plan (OSRP)

Explore Open Space and Recreation, meet our new OSRP friends!

The Town of Franklin has begun the process of updating the Open Space and Recreation Plan (OSRP) for the 2024 - 2031 update. An OSRP allows the town to strategize how to optimize, expand and improve open space and recreational facilities/ offerings by creating annual goals throughout a duration of 7 years.

To ensure the goals in the OSRP are reflective of resident priorities, we will facilitate a Comment and Feedback period through June 2023.

Residents are encouraged to explore our open space and recreation areas and be on the lookout for our friends Connor the Conservation Beaver and Ryan the Recreation Racoon! They'll be featured at select open space and recreational locations and they will be asking for your feedback to help us create the vision for Franklin's recreation and ecocentric spaces! This is one of the many ways the Town is supplementing the OSRP comment and feedback period which will run through 2023. Primary engagement is outlined below…

Public Engagement Opportunities

Timeline

OSRP Resident Survey:

Residents participation in the survey will allow town staff to craft a vision for the OSRP that is reflective of resident priorities. The survey will be available digitally and physically at the 1st and 2nd public hearings.

February 2023 - April 2023

Public Hearing 1:

Attendees will learn more about the Open Space and Recreation Plan, review the progress from the previous 2016 OSRP as well as review and provide feedback on the OSRP priorities drafted by town staff for the 2024 - 2031 OSRP.

February 2023

Public Hearing 2:

Town staff will present the 2024 - 2031 OSRP goals and objectives based off of resident input from the first public hearing and other outreach mechanisms.

April 2023

Public Hearing 3:

Town Staff will present a draft of the 2024 - 2031 OSRP that has been informed by additional resident input following the conclusion of the public hearing and other outreach mechanisms.
