FHS boys basketball end playoff run with loss to Brockton on Tuesday

Via HockomockSports.com and Milford Daily News, we share the results of the winter sports competition for Franklin High School on Saturday, March 7, 2023. We also provide the link to the full set of Hockomock League results below.

Boys Basketball = Division 1 = #3 Franklin, 47 vs. #14 Brockton, 56 – Final
"Ben Harvey wanted one last shot.

Following Franklin’s 56-47 loss to Brockton in the MIAA Division 1 Round of 16 on Tuesday, the Franklin High basketball senior captain — still in full uniform nearly a half hour after the final whistle — took a basketball out onto the mostly-empty Panthers court and attempted a free throw.

“Everyone knows the golden rule (that) you can’t end on a miss and I missed that (3-pointer) with eight seconds left so (I) had to end on a make,” Harvey said. “Free throws (have) been my most improved part of my game all year. So had to end it on a free throw.”

Congratulations Commissioner Jeff Livingston - Conservation Commissioners of the Year Award 2023

Congratulations Commissioner Jeff Livingston - Conservation Commissioners of the Year Award 2023

Commissioner Jeff Livingstone has selflessly served on the Franklin Conservation Commission (FCC) for over 13 years and throughout the years has become a cornerstone of the FCC. Commissioner Livingstone has been described as having an "institutional knowledge", not just of the Wetlands Protection Act, but more importantly of the people in the community. He has proven himself time and time again to be fair, pragmatic, and committed to providing a service not just to the residents of Franklin, but to its natural resources. He is as much of an advocate for climate resiliency, wetland restoration, and natural resource protection as he is for the residents he serves.

Commissioner Livingstone has made a career in the biochemistry and IT world, but also has a great passion for wetlands, conservation commissions, and the environment. While having a technical background in the life sciences and holding a PhD in Biochemistry, Dr. Livingstone has been heavily involved with Conservation Commission work for 13 years and was even the chair of the FCC for five. He participated in the 2016 Open Space and Recreation Plan, assisted with the master plan development for the DelCarte Recreation and Conservation Area, and is currently on the Community Preservation Committee. In his spare time when not working or hiking, Commissioner Livingstone participates in the Franklin Keystone Cooperative, which focuses on preservation of native forests and woodland. In conjunction with serving as past Chair of the Franklin Conservation Commission, Commissioner Livingstone continues to be a leader in advocacy for community outreach and has unwavering devotion to building the relationship between the Town, its people, and the Conservation Commission. Commissioner Livingstone is truly the epitome of a dedicated and involved community volunteer.

Congratulations on your award, Commissioner Livingstone. Well done, well earned, and well deserved - the FCC and Town of Franklin is lucky to have you!

In this Making Sense of Climate episode we go from Franklin's flood plain, to the water cycle, to dealing with climate grief (audio)

FM #954 = This is the Franklin Matters radio show, number 954 in the series.

This session of the radio show shares my conversation with Ted McIntyre, Franklin resident and climate activist via the Zoom conference bridge Tuesday, February 21, 2023.  We were joined by the Town of Franklin Conservation Agent Breeka Li Goodlander and as you’ll hear, we had a great discussion.

In this episode we covered the following topics:

  • Welcome Breeka Li to episode

  • Breeka Li provides her "road to Franklin Conservation Agent"

  • Open Space & Recreation update process underway

  • Franklin is basically a flood plain source for the Charles River

  • Role of wetlands, fragility of cycle, point source, non-point source

  • Climate grief, Skype a scientist

  • The remedy for grief is to take action, to make a difference

This discussion continues our journey understanding the MA roadmap toward net zero and while it helps me “make sense of climate”, we hope it helps with your understanding as well.

If you have climate questions or Franklin specific climate questions, send them in and we’ll try to answer them in a future session.

Our recording runs about 45 minutes. Let’s listen to my conversation with Ted and Breeka Li.  Audio file -> https://franklin-ma-matters.captivate.fm/episode/fm-954-making-sense-of-climate-24-02-21-23

When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing, and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first musical. FHS girls basketball end run in playoffs vs. Bishop Feehan on Monday

Girls Basketball = Division 1 = #2 Bishop Feehan, 69 vs. #15 Franklin, 61 – Final
Josh Perry, Managing Editor of HockomockSports.com  provides the game recap -
"On the road against the No. 2 seed, Franklin (18-5) went into Monday night’s Div. 1 Sweet Sixteen game wanting to prove that it can compete with one of the state’s best. To accomplish that goal, the Panthers were going to need to play some of their best basketball of the season.

In front of a packed, raucous gym, they did just that.

Franklin stormed out of the gates, building a nine-point lead at the end of the first quarter. Bishop Feehan rallied to cut the lead to just one by halftime and grabbed a lead heading to the fourth quarter, but the Shamrocks weren’t able to put the game away until the final minute, going 13-of-18 at the line in the fourth to pull out a 69-61 victory.

“I have nothing but pride,” said Franklin coach John Leighton. “I’m so happy with the way they played. I know the final score is what it is, but we went out and played our best basketball and that’s all you can ask them to do.”

"The pushback against the 15-minute city"

"After years of tireless advocacy to popularize greener and more accessible neighborhoods — where the necessities of daily life can be reached within a short walk or bike ride — champions of the 15-minute city are suddenly the target of far-right conspiracies. The theory is getting its 15 minutes of fame — not as people-centered urban spaces but rather as dystopian, quarter-hour prisons, with opponents saying that they will threaten personal freedom.

Yet, with societies increasingly fractured and fragmented, the concept could be the solution to bridging our divides. By creating more open, integrated, and healthy neighborhoods, it is possible to restore the in-person connections that are an antidote to polarization.

The concept of a 15-minute city emerged in the 1990s as an alternative to the single-use zoning paradigm that had dominated urban planning during the postwar era. It is the ultimate mixed-use development where residences, schools, shops, and parks stand side by side and are accessible within minutes by foot or bicycle. The intention is not just to reduce dependence on polluting vehicles and eliminate the need for long commutes but to also reduce food deserts and promote healthier and more sustainable lifestyles."
