Molly Dee talks about her work on the Artsy Box Project near Davis Thayer (audio)

FM #1129 = This is the Franklin Matters radio show, number 1129 in the series.

This session of the radio show shares my recorded conversation with Molly Dee. Molly is one of the artists who were selected for the Franklin Cultural District Artsy Box Project. The Artsy Box Project is now fully visible in and around downtown Franklin.

This is the second of a 2 part series. This is my conversation with Molly Dee. She is the artist who did the utility box at the corner near the former Davis Thayer School. It was good to talk with Molly. She surprised me with an answer to a simple question.

The show notes contain links to the photos showing the before, in process, and finished works.

I hope you learn something about their art and appreciate a little more about the role of art in Franklin.

Let’s listen to my conversation with Molly. Audio link -> https://franklin-ma-matters.captivate.fm/episode/fm-1129-artsy-box-project-part-2-of-2-molly-dee

The first part is my conversation with Shilpa Adduri, Jeni LaBollita, and Julia Dwinell. These three conversations were recorded before the Artsy Box painting started (April 2023). Each artist provided some of their background, about their work, and in particular on their Artsy Box project.  The Recording of Part 1 ->

Did you know there was a "Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Grandparents Raising Grandchildren?"

Neither did I. It appeared just about the time I was starting my reporting so it slipped by the radar then.
"On July 8, 2008, the Child Advocate bill was signed into law which included the establishment of the Commission on the Status of Grandparents Raising Grandchildren (Section 1 of Chapter 176, the Acts of 2008 M.G.L. Chapter 3, section 69). This legislation calls for a permanent commission on the status of grandparents raising grandchildren which consists of 15 individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to grandparents."
"The purpose of this Commission is to be a resource to the Commonwealth on issues affecting grandparents raising grandchildren, and relatives, other than parents, raising kin."

EPA Funds Clean School Bus Program - Announces $1B in Grants

"The US has announced nearly $1bn in grants to replace diesel-powered school buses with electric and lower-emitting vehicles.

The Environmental Protection Agency will disburse funds to 280 school districts serving 7 million children across the country in an effort to curb harmful air pollution and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

“Today we’re once again accelerating the transition to electric and low-emission school buses in America, helping to secure a healthier future where all our children can breathe cleaner air,” the EPA administrator, Michael Regan, said in a statement.

Diesel emissions have been linked to higher rates of asthma, cancer and school absenteeism. Communities of color and people living in low-income neighborhoods are more likely to suffer from higher rates of air pollution."

Town Council approves King St Cafe all alcohol license and sets work plan for next 2 years (audio)

FM #1128 = This is the Franklin Matters radio show, number 1128 in the series.

This session of the radio show shares the Town Council meeting held in Council Chambers on Wednesday, January 3, 2024. All 9 members  of the Council participated in the Council Chambers.

Quick recap:

  • Approved a New Section 12 Restaurant Common Victualer All Alcohol License and Approval of Lisa Ann Truax as the Manager - L Truax King Street Cafe Inc. d/b/a King Street Cafe, Located at 390 King Street

  • Reviewed, took community input, and discussed adjustments to the work plan for the next 2 years. These Council "goals" are a mix of projects not completed in prior years (Historical Museum cupola), place holders for work coming (Objectives TBD from the Master Plan), and wordsmithing to better provide opportunity to accomplish the "aggressive" plan put forward by Town Administration

    • Community input could be summarized in 3 areas: affordable housing, addressing climate change, and finding a workable solution even if a flag policy can't be found

  • Agreed to an increase for the ambulance rates. This is done annually to ensure the Town recovers appropriate costs as well as maintain competitive rates vis a vi neighboring communities. This was the first reading, the second reading will likely be the next Council meeting

  • The Council also approved Acceptance of Parcel A, Drainage Lot, on Westerly Side of Maple Street

The recording runs just about 2 hours. It was edited to remove the “Zoom bombing” incident. Let’s listen to the Town Council meeting on Jan 3, 2024.

MA Senate passes bill to address wheelchair repairs that can drag on for months

"Wheelchair users took a victory lap at the State House on Thursday after the state Senate passed legislation to address a national crisis, chronic delays of months or longer for even the most basic repairs to chairs.

The bill, passed with a vote of 39-0, would extend warranties on new chairs from one year to two, a period during which chair owners could avoid cumbersome insurance authorization for fixes, advocates said. Chairs with expired warranties would not need insurance approval for repairs less than $1,000.

“We’ve been fighting so hard just to get here,” said Pamela Daly, of Charlestown, after the Senate vote. “They’re simple mechanical problems or they’re simple parts that need to be ordered. This is not rocket science.”

Daly noted she was late for Thursday’s vote because her wheelchair’s brakes, installed about a month ago, failed earlier that morning, and she fell while trying to get into her chair. Though uninjured, she had to call paramedics to help her get into her chair."
