In the News: small business seminar, Chris Herren in Hopedale, Waite talks about scholarship

"The town holds an event for small-business owners and aspiring owners next week with the hopes of linking them with development resources. 
The event - scheduled for March 24 at 10 a.m. at the Franklin Municipal Building - will feature a presentation by the U.S. Small Business Association (SBA), among others. It is slated to end around noon. 
John Allen, of the town's Department of Planning and Community Development, said it is important for the town to assist its smaller businesses.
"Our economy is based on small businesses," he said. "It's great to have large businesses, but we need small businesses as well."

"Chris Herren could have retold his tale of how his battle with drug addiction sidelined his once promising career and turned him into a motivational speaker. 
Herren, speaking Friday at Hopedale Junior-Senior High School students in a packed auditorium, instead spoke about the students and young adults he’s met who have fallen victim to the scourge of drugs, depression and self-image issues."

"Waite said she first learned of the academy from her computer science teacher, who gave her a flyer about it. 
"I applied in May and I was accepted," she said. "So, for a week in July, I commuted in to Boston." 
She spent that week learning about apps and was given a Samsung Galaxy Note tablet to help further her efforts."
