Random thoughts – as Summer ‘24 is in the books.
by Pete Fasciano, Executive Director 09/22/2024
Another Summer ends. Another Autumnal equinox takes place. According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, it’s Sunday 9/22 at 8:43 AM. The best way to observe the moment is to find an old farmer – and sip coffee together. Then go out into the fields and harvest stuff until nightfall. I suggest harvesting pumpkins, which command a premium in Autumn. Everything edible or drinkable has to be pumpkin flavored. Then there’s that peak Halloween demand. Yep, pumpkins.
Note the full Moon nearest to the autumnal equinox is noted as the ”Harvest Moon!” It has to do with old farmers! They don’t want to work more than necessary. I get it. Near the fall equinox the full Moon rises around sunset for several nights in a row, providing old farmers with just enough extra light to finish harvesting pumpkins and ‘maximize their pumpkin yield’ before the killing hard frosts set in.
Then, supply in hand, the Old Farmers get together to create demand for pumpkins. Their Pumpkin PR press begins with their Almanac and spreads from there. It’s a highly coordinated pumpkin power play that keeps their farm stands busy deep into November – all the way to Thanksgiving.
There is much folk wisdom to be drawn
from hanging out with Old Farmers.
Hence, their almanac?
Pass that pumpkin pie, please.
