Dr Bergen comments on the honor it has been to work with all the SchComm members, and others within the district. We are bound by open meeting laws and engage in formal public discussions accordingly. As volunteers, it is never about the paycheck but paying it forward, giving it back.

Scofield commenting as well, "do we agree all the time, absolutely not, but we agree to disagree and get on with it."

I feel blessed to be part of the all female School Committee. I would also like to  thank the public administrative staff. I am so proud of the work that you do.

Glenn Jones, Town Councilor, thanking the committee members for their service, it does mean a lot, id does not get forgotten. The Administration makes us look so good

B. ECDC Developmental Summary

Kelty Kelly, principal of ECDC

thanks to all of you for your commitment and openness, we have had some challenges and to share and be heard meant a lot.

it is a developmental summary, not a report card. The children are 3, 4 and 5. It touches on some subjects as well as social emotional learning as well as socio-motor skills

we are looking to go forward with this, understanding that this is a work in process, assessing after each trimester.

this will go out with a letter to the families, and how to use it.

School Committee Recap: School Budget proposal approved, yet funding insufficient

The School Committee meeting was a long one as the ECDC, and elementary schools walked through updates on their School Improvement Plans (SIP). The District Improvement Plan goals 2 and 3 also received an update from the Central office. Lots of progress and accomplishments under challenging circumstances.

Then the Discussion / Action Item section rolled along and the committee voted to approve the expense budget and salary budget in separate votes for FY 2020. Only a few changes from what had been reviewed and had evolved over the several weeks leading up to Tuesday.

Then Superintendent Ahern revealed that the budget as approved was likely about $2.6M over what the Town can fund. The Town Council meeting the following night (Wednesday, March 13) would begin the overall Town budget discussion and how to address the shortfall.

Stay tuned for the on going budget discussion. What we want for our children and the Town of Franklin depends upon what info is forthcoming and how it is received.

Participate in the Budget hearings or at least tune into the meetings. Worse case, follow the updates here and don't be shy in asking good questions.

School Committee - Sep 25, 2018

The collection of posts from the School Committee meeting held on Sep 25, 2018.

Superintendent's Report

https://www.franklinps.net/sites/franklinmaps/files/uploads/superintendents_report_to_school_committee_september_25_2018.pdf

EdLeader 21
Dr. Edwards is not here this evening. She is off site attending a professional development conference with EdLeader 21. This group is an extension of the former Partnership for 21st Century Skills and is a big part of our district initiative on development of engaging curriculum and personalized learning. When she returns, we will be kicking off our efforts to engage with School Committee and the community in the development of Franklin’s Portrait of A Graduate, which is an exciting part of our District Strategy for Improvement.

Horace Mann Middle School Auditorium
I would like to provide a follow-up communication to the community about the Horace Mann Middle School Auditorium. Last Tuesday, during the heavy rains and flash flooding, the interior courtyard at HMMS became flooded with water due to clogged drainage. A large amount of water seeped into the school and settled in the pit of the auditorium, flooding the stage, and seeping into the entrance to the band room. Clean up services have been employed who have been spending the last week mitigating the damage, drying the spaces, and engaging in repair efforts.

The drywall in the entrance to the band room has been removed and water under the instrument storage cubbies was dried. The service company will come in and repair the sheetrock, like they did previously in Keller last year. Everything will be repaired in accordance with safe practices in the prevention of mold growth. The carpet in the auditorium has also been dried. It is a “backed” carpet, with protection on the underside, so there are no mold concerns about growth underneath. The auditorium stage is drying well. The Facilities department is optimistic that the floor can be sanded and refinished, which is a quicker fix than pulling up the boards for repair. They will reassess at the end of the week to confirm and we will keep the Committee apprised.

Franklin Cultural District Site Visit
The Franklin Public Schools participated in the Franklin Cultural District’s Site visit with the Massachusetts Cultural Council last Thursday, September 20. This site visit evaluates the district’s application towards a designation as a Cultural District. Along with other partner members, FPS attended the site visit meetings at the library and Franklin Historical Museum.

We also hosted a brief tour at the high school. Dr. Edwards, Mr. Peri, Mr. Klements, Ms.Plouffe, Ms. Johnson, and Mr. Nayler brought them through to see the highlights of the high school and the fine and performing arts areas. We toured the TV studio, music practice spaces, art classrooms, the 3D art installation in the courtyard, the art display cases, and the auditorium. Thank you so much to our educators for showing off the investment we make in the fine and performing arts for both our students as well as the greater Franklin community.

Kathleen Gerber, principal of Davis Thayer

  • has a strong set of teachers at DT, working on learning from each other, being empowered to pursue as necessary; set up and incorporated feedback via peer observation

Comment -"we learn best from each other"
Dean has been sitting there for all these years, to see them involved is great

  • piloted before and after school programs; collaboration with Lifelong Learning
  • fostering cultural awareness, bring the knowledge in from parents

Kate again (instead of overview, providing school specific info)

  • inviting families in to be a partner in their students success
  • partnering with Lesley as well to get training and awareness on how to deal with trauma
Comment - core values mean nothing unless we can use them in practice

Tonight was an excellent night, there are things we can all do better. hard not to be impressed and proud of what we do have here in Franklin.

Sara - I'd like to thank them as well. I have been talking about my transition plan. My impression on such a strong set of professionals

ECDC Preschool Program Enrollment Opens

The Franklin Public Schools
ECDC Preschool Program

Now Enrolling for Fall 2017…
Lottery to held on February 28, 2017

Applications now available on the principal's blog

and on the ECDC website

@FranklinECDC
@FranklinECDC

The F.X. O'Regan Early Childhood Development Center (@FranklinECDC) is committed to offering preschoolers here in Franklin an opportunity for high quality developmentally appropriate learning in an environment that encourages diversity, cooperation and understanding.

Our building and our curriculum have been designed to meet the complex needs of students with and without disabilities and help them develop the necessary readiness skills to prepare them for kindergarten.

Our curriculum is aligned with the MA state frameworks for Literacy, Math and Social Emotional Development as well as the NAEYC standards for teaching and learning. Our teachers are highly qualified public school certified in early childhood, special education or a combination of both specialties.

Students who enroll attend ECDC participate in our "integrated" preschool model. In these language-based classrooms, children of all ability levels, with and without identified special needs, are taught together in an environment that nurtures peers as partners in learning.

Research has proven that linking children of varying ability levels actually enhances the growth and development of all the children. Each of our classrooms maintains a low class size, maxing out with 15 students, with a Massachusetts certified teacher and at least one highly qualified educational assistant.

Franklin residents who turn 3 by August 31st are eligible to register for the integrated preschool program at ECDC.

Families interested in scheduling a tour at ECDC can call the main office @ 508 541-8166 to contact Kelty Kelley, ECDC Principal via email @ kelleyk@franklin.k12.ma.us.

Live reporting: ECDC update

2. Guests/Presentations

b. ECDC Update – Kelty Kelley

historically had two start times but needed to change to one start time
now really one school

pilot program last summer expanded this summer

families looking for longer school days, school has been meeting the needs by expanding

worked on curriculum last summer to synchronize the themes across the program, working on a common vocabulary to help all involved talk with the same words

"Big Idea" - posted at the beginning of each unit to help center the idea and activities

Open House to showcase the learning and engage the parents
created a passport to get checked off for each activity in each classroom, a change from the prior open house where the parents would go to the one classroom, visit and leave for the night

literacy tied in to the lessons

problem solving, how to fit ten apples on top, an engineering challenge

art theme, inspired by Eric Carle

increasing communications and connections, via email, also started a blog
You can find the Principal's Page here http://ecdcprincipalpage.blogspot.com/
(It is also found on the right column of the Franklin Matters home page where the Franklin Area blogs are located)

parent workshop to help them engage their children with STEM learning (a good way is by cooking)

a networking group for parents of children with special needs that don't already have an IEP

looking to make a long term partnership with the Franklin Public Schools, working with a collaborative advocate

working to include the children from sub-separate classrooms to spend time with regular classrooms, part of the long term transition

worked to streamline the registration process, eliminate one step in the process (already registered with the district for proof of residence)

special transition program with each of the receiving schools, enabling connections and meetings

the children makes the connections easily, facilitated the parent connections

Rohrbach
nice work, did well unifying the school

Mullen
some were fairly simple things and I don't mean to minimize it, do the foundational things and it helps

enrollment is currently above 160 children
