The Guardian: "'It’s like a death pit’: how Ghana became fast fashion’s dumping ground"

"It’s mid-morning on a sunny day and Yvette Yaa Konadu Tetteh’s arms and legs barely make a splash as she powers along the blue-green waters of the River Volta in Ghana. This is the last leg of a journey that has seen Tetteh cover 450km (280 miles) in 40 days to become the first person known to swim the length of the waterway.

It’s an epic mission but with a purpose: to find out whatis in the water and raise awareness of pollution in Ghana.

As the 30-year-old swims, a crew shadows her on a solar-powered boat, named The Woman Who Does Not Fear, taking air and water samples along the way that will be analysed to measure pollution.

It is hoped that the swim will draw attention to some of the pristine environments in Ghana, in contrast with places such as Korle Lagoon in the capital city of Accra, one of the most polluted water bodies on Earth."

Register O'Donnell’s “Suits for Success” Program Donates to West Roxbury VA Medical Center

Norfolk County Register of Deeds William P. O’Donnell donated 20 men’s and women’s dress shirts, 20 men’s and women’s dress pants, and 10 full suits to the West Roxbury Veteran Affairs Medical Center through the “Suits for Success” program, May 16.

Some people may view the suit or dress clothes as an unfortunate necessity that are kept in the back of the closet and only brought out on rare occasions. However, the high price of a suit can be an insurmountable obstacle for those who are just starting out on the road to success.

“This donation means a lot and will go a long way to helping veterans here at the VA Boston West Roxbury, Jamacia Plain, and Brockton,” said Peter Tribuna, Voluntary Service Specialist, VA Center for Development and Civic Engagement. “This type of donation, especially, is what facilitates helping patients change their lives and will go to patients trying to get a new job, trying to move ahead in life, and gain self-sustainability and independence.”

The West Roxbury Veteran Affairs Medical Center provides essential services and support to veterans in need, including health care, social services, and housing, helping them to rebuild their lives and achieve success in all areas.

Register O’Donnell remarked, “We’re happy to assist the West Roxbury VA Medical Center. I thank all those who donated to our ‘Suits for Success’ program, and I hope other local residents and businesses will consider making a clothing donation. The program is truly needed, and it’s a great resource for the community.”

The VA Boston Healthcare System’s mission is to offer options for timely, quality services for Veterans through care and respect for their physical, psychological, and spiritual health.

“I encourage people to volunteer at the VA hospital to show the veterans that they are appreciated and valued, and that while many Americans may not be able to relate to what these veterans have experienced, that they do care and are willing to listen and help in any way they can,” said Tribuna.

Since the Registry started the "Suits for Success" program in February 2009, it has collected more than 9,500 articles of clothing.

Register O’Donnell noted, "We've learned over the last decade that programs like 'suits for success' work." Register O’Donnell continued, "This program has given many people the confidence to take the next step in their lives, and if we can help even one veteran achieve this goal, it's worth it."

The "Suits for Success" program, developed by Register O’Donnell, partners with groups like Interfaith Social Services of Quincy, Father Bill’s & MainSpring of Quincy, the Veterans Affairs Boston Healthcare System Voluntary Service Program, Circle of Hope in Needham, United Parish’s Thrifty Threads, Suits and Smiles in Jamaica Plain, and InnerCity Weightlifting on our ‘Suits for Success’ program to assist those who are in need of clothing as well as household items. The mission of "Suits for Success" is to collect donations of suitable clothing to be distributed to individuals who may need appropriate attire for employment interviews.

“Whether it's through volunteering, donating, or simply showing gratitude and respect, we can all play a role in helping veterans reclaim their lives,” said Register O’Donnell. “I am honored to deliver these donations on behalf of the many people who contributed to the "Suits for Success" program and to be part of this effort to put these veterans on the path to success and ultimately help them achieve self-sufficiency."

Individuals interested in joining the VA’s Adult Volunteer Program can find more information at the VA Boston health care website at https://www.va.gov/boston-health-care/work-with-us/volunteer-or-donate.

Franklin's Neighbor Brigade can use your help with this clothing request - complete by April 28

Project Just Because is asking for our help again this year with clothing.  They specifically have a high need for toddler boys-teenage and men's clothing of all sorts. Any other clothing is needed too.  They accept new and used clothing in excellent condition. They cannot except anything with rips, stains, broken zippers, any item with names inside the label, anything without a size listed, anything smelling musty, or anything with animal fur.  Items that must be new are pajamas, undergarments, bathing suits, hats, socks, and shoes.

Project Just Because manages numerous year-long and seasonal programs that are offered to all Massachusetts residents in need. They are committed to help in the most vulnerable, individuals and families. Their goal is to provide every person that walks in the door with what they need. Project Just Because gives an experience that is conducted with compassion and dignity, and that is respectful of culture and diversity.  They also have dramatically expanded their program offerings and are serving more clients than ever.

Donations are being asked to be collected and dropped off on the front porch of Linda Gagnon by the April 28th.  Once you sign up you will see Linda's address under your scheduled event.

Thank you!

Register O'Donnell’s "Suits for Success" Program Donates to United Parish’s Thrifty Threads

Norfolk County Register of Deeds William P. O’Donnell donated 12 winter jackets, 10 full suits, and more than 45 other articles of business attire to United Parish’s Thrifty Threads through the "Suits for Success" program last month.

The often-taken-for-granted suit or dress clothes hidden away in the back closet and only occasionally seeing the light of day may seem to some like an unfortunate necessity. However, for those struggling on the path to success, the cost of a suit can be an unsurmountable barrier.

"It’s hard to move forward if you don’t feel good about yourself, and this gives people a chance to look good, feel good, and grow as an individual," said Louise Bowler, Thrifty Threads Team Leader. Thrifty Threads provides inexpensive clothing to anyone who needs quality attire. Proceeds from the thrift store support United Parish’s outreach and social justice programs. The organization also passes on more than half of the donations it receives to nonprofit organizations working directly with people in need.

Register O’Donnell remarked, "We’re happy to assist Thrifty Threads. I thank all those who donated to our ‘Suits for Success’ program, and I hope other local residents and businesses will consider making a clothing donation. The program is truly needed, and it’s a great resource for the community."

The "Suits for Success" program, developed by Register O’Donnell, partners with groups like Father Bill's & MainSpring, Needham Community Council, Suits and Smiles, Interfaith Social Services, InnerCity Weightlifting, VA Boston Healthcare System, Voluntary Service Program, New Life Furniture Bank of Massachusetts, and United Parish’s Thrifty Threads. The mission of "Suits for Success" is to collect donations of suitable clothing to be distributed to individuals who may need appropriate attire for employment interviews.

Since the Registry started the "Suits for Success" program in February 2009, it has collected more than 9,000 articles of clothing.

"Receiving donations like this means a lot and it’s important," said Bowler. "This may give someone who is looking for a job now the confidence they need to take the next step."

Thrifty Threads is located within United Parish, is open Fridays and Saturdays, 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., and is fully operated by a team of dedicated volunteers.

"During the past decade, we have learned that programs like ‘Suits for Success’ work," said O’Donnell. "This program has given many people a valuable resource to help them on the path to success and may ultimately help them achieve self-sufficiency."

Register O'Donnell Tours FBMS' Yawkey Housing Resource Center, "Suits for Success" Program Makes Clothing Donation

Norfolk County Register of Deeds William P. O'Donnell donated 10 full suits and more than 40 other articles of business attire to Father Bill's & MainSpring (FBMS) through the "Suits for Success" program during a tour of the construction site for the Yawkey Housing Resource Center on Nov. 17.

'The Suits for Success' Program and Father Bill's & MainSpring share a common goal, which is to provide individuals who are struggling with homelessness or are at risk of homelessness with the opportunity to succeed and find independence," remarked Register O'Donnell. "We're happy to assist Father Bill's & MainSpring with this clothing donation."

The "Suits for Success" program, developed by Register William O'Donnell in partnership with several local charities, collects donations of suitable clothing to be distributed to groups like Father Bill's & MainSpring and to individuals who may need appropriate attire for employment interviews.

During the event, John Yazwinski, president and CEO of FBMS, led Register O'Donnell on a tour of the ongoing construction of the Yawkey Housing Resource Center. The project will consist of two buildings: the first is a resource center, and the other building will consist of 25 to 30 apartments for permanent housing. The Housing Resource Center will include two dormitories, a medical clinic, showers, a laundry area, and a commercial kitchen.

"It means a lot to us to have the support of the local community and to know that others see the value in a project like this," said Yazwinski. "A value that encompasses not only the immediate benefit of offering a place to stay for those who are struggling with homelessness, but also the resources that this facility will provide to assist individuals in achieving self-sufficiency."

The Yawkey Housing Resource Center will provide those in need with healthcare, meal services, young adult services, education services, veteran services, and substance abuse treatment.

"Projects like 'Suits for Success' and the future Yawkey Housing Resource Center are truly needed, and it's a great resource for helping people enhance their opportunities in life," said Register O'Donnell.

Since February 2009, the "Suits for Success" program, in partnership with Interfaith Social Services of Quincy, Father Bill's & MainSpring of Quincy and Brockton, the Boston Veterans Administration's Healthcare System Voluntary Service Program, and InnerCity Weightlifting, has collected more than 9,000 articles of clothing.

"We've learned over the last decade that programs like 'suits for success' work," said Register O'Donnell. "This program has given many people the confidence to take the next step in their lives, and we hope it can continue its successful mission."

To donate to "Suits for Success," individuals may bring their donations of business-appropriate attire for men and women to the Norfolk County Registry of Deeds, 649 High Street in Dedham, between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Clothing donations must be clean, without stains, in style, on hangers, or neatly folded. The donation may also be placed in either re-usable tote bags or green plastic bags. Suggested donations for men include suits, dress shirts, pants, and ties. Donations for women include suits, dresses, blouses, skirts, and women's dress pants.

"I thank all those who donated to our 'Suits for Success' program, and I hope other local residents and businesses will consider making a clothing donation," said Register O'Donnell. "I feel like this program can truly make a world of difference in someone's life."

Reminder: now the requirement for Franklin residents to call SimpleRecycling (or another outlet) no longer can use trash

"Starting Tuesday, Massachusetts residents will no longer be able to throw out mattresses, textiles, or shoes, according to the state Department of Environmental Protection.

As part of a statewide waste reduction plan, residents are required to recycle or donate such items rather than dispose of them, the department said. That includes clothing, shoes, bedding, towels, curtains, and fabric. Disposal of mattresses is also banned, including full-foam, latex, and “mattresses in a box.”

MassDEP issued a 2030 Solid Waste Master Plan in October 2021, aiming to reduce disposal statewide by 30 percent over the next decade.

The plan also lowers the threshold on the disposal of commercial food and organic waste to a half-ton of waste weekly per facility. Restaurants are instead required to process food waste by composting, among other methods, according to MassDEP."
