The Franklin Cultural Council (FCC) is pleased to announce its first annual Halloween House Decorating Contest.

Let your imagination and creativity come alive as you bring the spirit of Halloween to your front yard! 

Make this fall one that you and your family will never forget!  
 
Beginning October 22, Franklin homeowners can design an outdoor display to transform their front lawns to a landscape of ghouls, ghosts and goblins; fantasy-filled scenes of magic; or a monument to the macabre.

The Franklin Recreation Department is hosting the following challenges and contests to ALL residents during this stay at home quarantine. 

PRIZES will be awarded to the top winners and all winning videos and/or photographs will be posted on our website and social media.
 **REMEMBER these contests are to be done following the guidelines of social distancing. They are not to be done with a group of friends.**

Franklin Cultural Council: art competition for high school students

Via Facebook post by the Franklin Cultural Council (FCC):
Hiya FCC supporters. We're all needing a little encouragement and support this week! Hope this will help!

The FCC announces a town-wide art competition for all HIGH SCHOOL students in Franklin. We are looking for one high school artist to create an 8x11 poster for all of Franklin. The theme and wording of your poster should contain, "We're All in this Together", "OneFranklin", "One People, One Planet, One Love" or similar message!

Your poster needs to be BOLD and CLEAR and be able to be seen from the street to a house/apartment/storefront. The winner's poster will be duplicated and distributed for any community member in Franklin who would like one for their door or front window. The goal is to fill our our town's windows with art and positive and hopeful messaging.

Deadline = THIS Thursday, March 26th, 5pm. One entry per applicant. Post a photo of your poster in the comment section on the Franklin Cultural Council page when it's completed! Good Luck!

And elementary and middle school students -we're hoping to have something for you too. Stay tuned tomorrow~

Franklin Cultural Council: Town Wide Art Contest - week of March 16, 2020

The Franklin Cultural Council (FCC) is announcing a town-wide ONLINE ART CONTEST the week of March 16 geared towards elementary and middle school students

There will be two winners per day; one elementary school student and one middle school student. Prizes will be hand delivered to your mailbox!
  • Monday, Make Art with Nature
  • Tuesday, Create Art with Paint
  • Wednesday, Create Art with Recycles
  • Thursday, Create a Collage of your Pet
  • Friday, Create Sculpture Art

Photo examples will be available at the beginning of each day! 

Photo of your child's artwork should be submitted on the "post of the day" on the Franklin Cultural Council Facebook page with their name (or alias) and grade.

Picture This: Your Great Outdoors Photo Contest 2019

"Do you appreciate the outdoors and enjoy taking photographs that celebrate your connection with nature? Then you and Picture This: Your Great Outdoors, Mass Audubon’s annual statewide photo contest, are a picture-perfect fit. 
Picture This welcomes shutterbugs of all ages, backgrounds, and levels of experience to share the natural beauty of the Bay State through their photography. The competition, which each year attracts hundreds of photographers who submit thousands of images, is now under way and continues through Monday, Sept. 30. 
Participants can enter in either 18-and-older or Under-18 age categories and can focus on six subject areas: People in Nature, Birds, Mammals, Other Animals, Landscapes, and Plants and Fungi. Contestants can submit up to 10 images. 
Photographs can have been taken any time prior to or during the 2019 contest period, but must have been shot in Massachusetts or at Mass Audubon’s Wildwood Camp in Rindge, NH."

Library of Congress: Letters About Literature Contest Opens


Writing Contest for Young Readers Across the Country Announced

Letters About Literature, the Library of Congress reading-and-writing contest now in its 26th year, is accepting applications beginning Nov. 1 for the 2018-19 cycle. For the first time, letters will be submitted electronically. 

Letters About Literature asks students in grades 4-12 to read a book, poem, speech or essay by an author, living or dead, to think about how that work affected them and to write to the author on the work's impact.

Franklin Historical Museum: King Philip's Indian War Presentation (inside) and Scarecrow Contest (outside) - Sunday, Oct 14

NY Times bestselling author Michael Tougias will give a slide presentation on the war between the Colonists and Native Americans in 1675-76 at The Franklin Historical Museum at 1:15 Sunday, October 14, as part of the Museum’s Second Sunday Speaker Series.

Tougias is the author of the acclaimed Until I Have No Country (A novel of King Philip's War), and co-author with Eric Schultz of King Philip's War: The History and Legacy of America's Forgotten Conflict.

The first part of the presentation will discuss the Indian way of life, Colonial settlements, and the events leading up to the war. The second part covers the battles and the strategy during this cataclysmic war, which on a per capita basis was the bloodiest conflict in our nation's history.

Slides include battle sites, period sketches, historic markers, maps, and suggestions for visiting road-side history. Tougias also discusses Native strategy during the war and the challenges of writing a historic novel. Former Commissioner of Indian Affairs for Massachusetts and member of the Wampanoag Tribe, Edith Andrews, is quoted on the novel's back cover, commenting that Until I Have No Country "captures the essence of the Native American." The novel includes adventure, romance, and intrigue while staying true to historical facts. A book signing will follow the presentation.

Tougias is the author and co-author of 21 non-fiction books including the national bestsellers Rescue of the Bounty, A Storm Too Soon, Overboard! The Finest Hours: The True Story of the Coast Guard’s Most Daring Rescue (to be a Disney movie), Derek’s Gift, The Cringe Chronicle and his award-winning book, There’s A Porcupine In My Outhouse! (Misadventures of a Mountain Man Wannabe). 

His book, Ten Hours Until Dawn: The True Story of Heroism and Tragedy Aboard the Can Do is the recipient of the American Library Association “Editors Choice” award. More about the author can be found at www.michaeltougias.com

"In our continuing efforts to inspire and promote voices in girls’ and women’s sports, the Awesome Sports Project is excited to launch the Awesome Sports Writing Contest. Male and female writers of all ages and level of writing experience are welcome, but the submission must be nonfiction and about girls’ and women’s sports. The work must be previously unpublished in any form. 
The reading fee is $7 per entry, and will help us with the cost of running of the contest – please contact us if the fee is an obstacle to participation. Multiple submissions from a single writer are welcome. We also look forward to reading international submissions, but all writing must be in English. There is a 3,000-word limit, with no minimum."

Franklin Cultural Council Announces Logo Contest

The Franklin Cultural Council has announced a design contest for a new logo. Open to anyone, the contest encourages local talent to create a new, color logo for the Council that embodies its mission of supporting the arts, humanities and interpretive sciences through grant funding to local projects and programs. 

The contest will be open until March 12, 2017. The winner will be awarded a $50 cash prize and be recognized in a reception on March 23.

The mission of the Franklin Cultural Council (FCC) is to encourage participation and enhance opportunities for enrichment in the cultural arts and sciences throughout our community.

2nd Annual Big Wedding Giveaway


PLAINVILLE, MA: Local wedding photographer Jen Osojnicki didn't realize what she was getting into when she offered a wedding giveaway contest last year. "I came up with the idea because I thought it would be a fun, exciting way to help a bride win her dream wedding, and it was. We offered some great prizes and the winning bride was thrilled," says Jen. Repeating the contest seemed like a good idea…and good ideas have a way of growing to become great. Within days of her decision to hold the 2nd annual Big Wedding Giveaway Contest, other local wedding vendors had jumped on board, and Ms. Osojnicki has now amassed donation of services and gift certificates for a true dream wedding--a prize worth nearly $20,000.  


The 2nd annual Big Wedding Giveaway Contest is an essay contest for engaged couples; entry submission runs from February 15, 2012 through February 24, 2012. Entrants must write an essay telling their story—how they met and fell in love—including details about why they deserve to win the prize, and send the essay, along with a recent photo of the couple, to jenosojnicki@gmail.com. Essays must be between 250-500 words long, and a group of judges will choose the top essays out of all the submissions. On February 29, 2012, these top essays will be posted on www.jenosojnicki.com and opened for public voting on Ms. Osojnicki's blog (voting runs until 3:00pm March 6, 2012).  Wedding dates must also be included in each entry, as many of the vendors who are booked into 2013 must take their schedules into account when choosing the winner.  "Last year, some of the stories brought us to tears. It reminded me about why I love what I do," says Ms. Osojnicki. The winning couple will be announced at an event (details to follow) and crowned with—what else—a veil and top hat.

Bring Back the 4th™

From May 4th through June 14th, 2011, Liberty Mutual Insurance is hosting Bring Back the 4th™, an online contest that Franklin community members can enter for a chance to win one of ten $10,000 grants to support our town’s official Fourth of July celebration! 
All our community members need to do is visit www.BringBackThe4th.com between May 4th and June 14th and take a brief multiple choice quiz on “Responsible Moments in U.S. History.” Each completed quiz counts as one credit towards a city or town’s total score.

Towns with the highest quiz participation will be eligible to win one of 10 Bring Back the 4th™ grants, distributed via three population-based categories: small (4 grants), medium (3 grants) and large (3 grants).
