FHS Class of 2020 post graduation plans

Thanks to the FHS administration for sharing the data to create the following pivot table. While some graduates are headed off to military (Army, US Coast Guard), some off to the working world, many have plans to continue their education in a two or four year college or university.

More than 80 institutions get 2 or more graduates. Another 50+ institutions get at least one graduate. So depending upon how you count the categories, the class of 2020 is certainly spreading out!

“We saw a lot of happy tears out there”

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:

"Waving from a truck through town wasn’t how Chorrkin Chin envisioned celebrating his high school graduation, but it was also one car ride he’ll ever forget.

“It was crazy – I don’t even know where to start,” said Chin, vice president of the Franklin High School Class of 2020 after the high school’s first-ever car parade graduation on Friday afternoon. Wearing his blue gown with a gold graduation stole and honor cords, the 18-year-old graduate decked out his ride with silver streamers and banners for the ceremony. He saw many teachers along the 3-4 mile route, which included circling the Town Common then ending up at the high school where graduates received their diplomas from Principal Paul Peri and roaring cheers from teachers and the administration.

He even saw his kindergarten teacher.

“There was so much support for us in this community – it’s unbelievable,” he said. “Definitely one of the best times (of my life that) I’ve ever had.”

The graduates received their diplomas over Mon-Tue-Wed as the walk across the stage was recorded and then broadcast on Friday night. Many families took the opportunity to record an audio shout-out their the class and their individual graduate. Those shout-outs were played on the wfpr.fm broadcast of the parade along with a playlist of music provided by the senior class. The recorded shout-outs will be available in a podcast in the next couple of days.

School Committee Meeting recap - budget not good news, 25 or more teachers targeted for potential cuts

As with most meetings in this pandemic period, I took my notes via Twitter during the meeting reporting in real-time via the virtual session.

The Twitter hashtag can be found online: "#schcomm0526"
https://twitter.com/hashtag/schcomm0526?src=hashtag_click

Pre-meeting
Real-time reporting
  • Real-time reporting underway for School Committee meeting tonight #schcomm0526
  • Attendance via roll call for #schcomm0526 all 7 present
  • Superintendent report: #schcomm0526 Miriam Goodman presented recently to a professional group ; bus fees clarification, to provide continuity of service: approx 50 participation in meeting
  • Roles in education expanding, doc explaining such roles shared via link posted in Superintendent report #schcomm0526 available in Weds AM and on main page
  • Details on June 5 timing coming next week. 50th anniversary group of FHS graduation, where are they? TBD #schcomm0526

Retiree Recognition
Intro of New FHS principal
  • Next up - intro of the new FHS principal Josh Hanna. #schcomm0526 his first comment was that he was blown away by the retirement honorees, how much that means, he is excited to be here
  • Next up; discussion/action items with some policy changes; 2 for second reading, motion to approve, second, passed 7-0 #schcomm0526 next item motion to approve as 1st reading, passed 7-0. Votes via roll call: last item policy elimination, passed 7-0
Discussion only items
  • Discussion only items: closure update first - DESE guidelines on in person grad released last week, already planning for the virtual grad and parade will go forward. #schcomm0526 Friday June 5 the plan, pre-recorded sets of grad diploma and speeches to be broadcast
  • Plans underway school visits to clear out rooms, lockers, etc. Schedule being finalized. Awaiting summer guidelines from DESE; CDC guidance released, awaiting state info on the September planning #schcomm0526
Budget
  • Next up budget... Yes, budget for #schcomm0526 up for Finance Committee meeting on Thursday, May 28. Magnitude of gap between $3.4m and $5.4m currently, those numbers could change as State funding is determined (whenever that is?)
  • FY 22 and FY 23 will also be challenging budget years given the uncertainty of the economy, the pandemic, and the recovery. #schcomm0526 Judy asks why education can't be delivered more cheaply, avg salary (w/o benefits) is 70K?
  • Budget was going to be an issue before COVID-19, only gets worse with the pandemic State and Town revenue in disarray. Likely to be one of several budgets per Town Admin J Hellen. #schcomm0526 option 1 could mean 25 positions (3.4m) option 2 could mean 50 (5.4m)
  • Salaries are somewhat competitive, we do loose candidates when they have multiple offers, #schcomm0526 budget is 75-80 percent to salary and benefits. Tim came because of the schools, if we keep cutting, that perspective/expectation will change
  • There is some reimbursement of COVID-19 incremental costs but not enough to provide a resolution to the major budget issue. Cares act approx $126,000 #schcomm0526
  • Lots of programs are designed to keep students in district to avoid higher outplacement costs, the story needs to be told of all that is done. #schcomm0526 students are coming with greater challenges needing more support, and that won't change
  • Judy asks what part of the budget is unfunded mandates? Per Sara, a good number but not readily available, can work to pull together something. #schcomm0526 reduction of teachers will increase class size; supplies generally picked up by teachers when cut from budget
Information matters
  • Moving on to info matters; budget subcomm meeting regularly, Community relations met last week, newsletter in works for what is underway. MA ranks 2nd in criteria of responses to COVID-19 response. Facility report coming early June, no decision made #schcomm0526
  • Facility updates on the schools page https://franklinps.net/district/davis-thayer-facilities-analysis #schcomm0526
Adjourn
  • Next up - future agenda items, DECA students scheduled for June 9 meeting, request for page numbering on docs over 2 pages (some one still using printed copies) #schcomm0526 motion to accept consent agenda passed 7-0 via roll call
  • Motion to adjourn, second, passes via roll call 7-0. Real time reporting for this meeting ends. Thanks! #schcomm0526

Graduation! It’s a Happening Thing

by Pete Fasciano, Executive Director 05/24/2020

"There are some things that just can’t not happen. High School Graduation is one of them. It’s an undeniable rite of passage, and our FHS Panthers will not be denied. Normally, we celebrate this milestone in the FHS gym for a few hours. This year’s graduation will happen in like manner, but it will take place over several days.

We are working with school officials to record each and every student’s moment. One-by-one, with safe social distancing, each student will walk the stage as per usual to receive his/her diploma. Each student, accompanied by his/her family, will experience that well-deserved, special moment of accomplishment. Their families deserve this celebratory moment of achievement as well.

This will take several days to record each student safely and edit all of their moments into the graduation program, scheduled to air on Friday June 5th at 7PM, and repeated several times thereafter.

Our 2020 Graduation may be happening in slow motion, but we hope and trust that all good things that spring from dedication and accomplishment will come to each and every student – not just in the fullness of time, but in the fullness of youth.

Even when we must be separately prerecorded, community television can bring us all together.

And – as always –
Thank you for listening to wfpr●fm. And, thank you for watching Franklin.tv

Note: There is also a planned car parade for graduating students and families. We are in the midst of planning our coverage of this unique and fun event. As they say – stay tuned.

This event might become one memorable example of a new tradition – a new way that we can all celebrate the good moments in new ways, not just this year, but every year. I’m good with that.

Our heartiest congrats to all of our 2020 Panthers on Parade. Panthers rule!"

In the News: FHS planning ‘memorable’ graduation parade

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:

"Despite high school memories, like prom and spring sports, lost to the coronavirus pandemic, Franklin High School Principal Paul Peri said the district is planning what could be one of its most memorable high school graduations.

On Tuesday night during a Franklin School Committee virtual meeting, Peri, joined by Senior Class President Danny Harrington and Vice President Chorrkin Chin, outlined the school’s plan for a graduation parade tentatively scheduled for June 5 in place of its usual ceremony, which is held every year in the high school gymnasium.

“Over the course of the last few weeks, we have been meeting quite a bit with various groups and we are trying to pull together a graduation ceremony like never seen before in Franklin, and I think that the class advisors and officers have done an absolutely incredible job of really working with all the different parties involved,” said Peri.

Three possible routes have been mapped out, with students starting at the middle schools they attended in town, and the top 10% of the class and class officers starting at the high school."

FHS Graduation Planning
Facility Report - part 1
  • Next up, facility report from Kaestle Boos Assoc, tonight only part 1 of the update, lead presenter outside his house being heckled by his young kids, #schcom0512
  • #schcom0512 key slide on assumptions for class room utilization rates  https://twitter.com/FranklinMatters/status/1260354259528429571
  • KBA likes how Sullivan stands up today, they had helped with design so acknowledged bias, #schcom0512
  • Draft report being prepared for presentation next month, #schcom0512  https://twitter.com/FranklinMatters/status/1260357531815346177
  • Every school is so well maintained, DT does have issues physically #schcom0512
  • #schcom0512 capacity and utilization rates 67% at elementary and 49% currently, elementary goes up 2, middle goes down 8 per enrollment forecast
  • Q on capability for modeling with the data, yes, esp with social distance and likely only half students in room, so shifting schedule is being looked at #schcom0512
  • Q how has sq ft reqs changed over the last 10-15 years? Yes, a challenge to provide flex space vs. 'old' factory/industrial models #schcom0512 appropriate for kid interruption during his remarks, allows for pause and why we're here
  • Everyone is finding that school capacity is excess, a national issue and demographics related as well #schcom0512
  • Q is ADA considered. Yes, it is not a full requirements report but it is considered #schcom0512
  • Target for conceptual analysis for draft review in June by Central Office and sometime in the month for school Committee #schcom0512 there are still 4 classrooms at Kennedy that are modular and end of life, not used for general education
  • Some folks would be better off not turning on their camera if they really want to watch; rather than have us (paying attention to the meeting) get distracted by cats on keyboards, or backgrounds circling the globe or other movements about their house ... #schcom0512
Discussion/Action Items
  • Moved on to school choice action item, haven't since 2007-2008 school year; recommended not at this time #schcom0512
  • Motion passed 7-0 via roll call, no school choice for next year #schcom0512
  • Bissanti asks question about comment in prior meeting by Pfeffer, because it was garbled he would like it repeated. Not appropriate at this time, deferred to budget item later in agenda #schcom0512
  • Spring sports, transportation, lunch balances, etc. Recommended for approval. #schcom0512 clarify questions via chat being answered , vote on measure via roll call passed 7-0
  • Moving to policy section, 3 moved to second reading previously now up for approval: #schcom0512 motion to adopt the 3 policies as detailed, passed 7-0 via roll call
  • For first reading 2 policies, one on pest management, one for emergency plans updated - last time was updated 2010 and thereby was due;
  • Motion to move to second reading, passed via roll call 7-0
  • Last up on discussion action, calendar update required for professional day; passed via roll call 7-0 #schcom0512
Discussion Only Items
  • Discussion only on the budget updates, more work to be done in prep for the Finance Committee meeting end of May, 1st week of June. #schcom0512
  • SchComm meeting calendar drafted for next year, no vote needed yet. #schcom0512
  • Refer to Davis Thayer analysis page for updates, presentation doc from tonight to be there soon #schcom0512
New Business
  • Next meeting, continue discussion on budget, usually recognize retirees, DECA students should be here sometime; pledge of allegiance at start of meeting usually done, didn't have flag as background for tonight, #schcom0512 also requested for remote school sessions
Closing

"it’s definitely been quite a ride here"

Josh Perry, Managing Editor of HockomockSports.com, provides an update on the collegiate career of FHS grad, Ryan Spillane:

"Looking forward to his junior season at St. Anselm, Ryan Spillane was expecting to see a larger role for the Hawks. The former Franklin High standout had played in 23 games as a sophomore, scoring a pair of goals and recording three assists, and he had high hopes of even more ice time and even more production as a junior.

Unfortunately, a hamstring injury in September would cost Spillane the entire year. He has worked hard to not only get back on the ice but to become a regular contributor for a team with its sights set on bringing home the NE-10 title.

“By the beginning of the summer I was ready to get back on the ice and get in shape,” Spillane explained. “By the time the season came, I felt like I was ready to go, back in game shape like I was two years ago. It’s nice to be back on the ice.”

It is always hard for an athlete to sit and watch his team play, but Spillane praised his coaches, teammates, and the training staff at St. Anselm for keeping him involved and for getting him back on the ice for this season."

Post-Secondary Employment Outcomes (PSEO) Explorer

A cool tool to help determine what the future income of certain degree programs would be in the years after graduation. Only 4 states currently have data in this tool. For the state institutions in Colorado, Texas, Michigan, and Wisconsin the data query is easy to use and insightful. Someday, MA will be available (along with more states)!
"The U.S. Census Bureau released an update to Post-Secondary Employment Outcomes (PSEO) Explorer, a data visualization tool providing easy access to employment and earnings outcomes for college graduates based on the industries they enter after receiving their degrees. The PSEO pilot research program is being conducted in cooperation with higher education institutional systems to examine labor market outcomes of post-secondary graduates.

PSEO Explorer now features employment flows tabulations, which explore flows from institutions and degrees to the industries and geographies where graduates are employed.
