Should MA lead or follow?

From the Mass Climate Action Network we share this episode of The Climate Minute
New Governor Charley Baker’s Executive Order 562 would substitute weak federal environmental standards for the existing superior state regulations here in Massachusetts. Based on overheated rhetoric claiming that state regulations are “confusing, unnecessary, inconsistent and redundant” the governor orders “each secretariat, agency, department, board, commission, authority or other body”… “to promptly undertake a review of each and every regulation” and retain only those which do “not exceed federal requirements.”
The rule means that any Massachusetts environmental regulations stronger than their Federal counterparts will be dropped, and the weaker Federal ones will be used. Our state is a national leader in many areas, including the fight against carbon pollution and global warming. The regulations that embody that leadership are now at risk. If we rely on the Federal regulations, Massachusetts’ environmental policy will be set by the likes of Senator Ted Cruz. Think that is a good idea? There is more. Listen in.

Dean College Executive Lecture Series Announces World Series Champion Boston Red Sox Chairman Tom Werner as Honored Guest Speaker for Fall 2014

Dean College is honored to host Thomas C. Werner, Chairman of the 2013 World Series Champion Boston Red Sox, for the Dean College Leadership Institute Executive Lecture Series on September 23, 2014. The Executive Series offers a unique and interactive opportunity for students, alumni, and the local community to interact with today's business leaders.
Guest speaker Thomas C. Werner, is one of the chief architects behind three World Championships for the Boston Red Sox in 2004, 2007 and 2013, in which the Sox won their first World Series at Fenway Park since 1918.
"The Red Sox are a New England institution and Mr. Werner has helped build one of the most successful franchises in all of sports," said Dr. Paula Rooney, President of Dean College. "This event is a great opportunity for our students to learn from the management of the Red Sox as Mr. Werner shares many of the keys to his and the team's great achievements."

Before joining the Red Sox ownership group, Mr. Werner was an award-winning television producer behind several network hits including The Cosby Show, Roseanne, and That 70's Show and is a member of the Television Hall of Fame. He became Chairman of the Boston Red Sox in 2002 when his company, Fenway Sports Group, bought the club. He is also chairman of the New England Sports Network, and since 2010, chairman of the Liverpool Football Club of the English Premier League.
Under Werner's leadership as Chairman of the Boston Red Sox, he oversaw successive improvements to Fenway Park that restored its luster. In 2012, Fenway Park was the first ballpark to celebrate its 100th anniversary. More importantly, during Werner's tenure, the Boston Red Sox have enjoyed unprecedented success, having advanced to postseason play three straight seasons and six times in seven years for the first time in its history. The pinnacle, of course, was the 2004 World Championship that ended an 86-year drought. Another World Series victory would follow in 2007, and another in 2013.
Charitably speaking, Werner was instrumental in establishing the Red Sox Foundation, which gives away millions of dollars each year to local programs, and the Home Base Program, which aims at helping military veterans affected by post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury.
Werner has served on a number of Boards, including the White House Fellows Commission. He currently serves on the Crossroads School Board, Board for After School All Stars, and the Ron Brown Scholar Program. Werner also serves on the Board of Major League Baseball Enterprises, Major League Baseball Properties, and the Board of the MLB Network.  In 2013, for his leadership and dedication to the game, Werner received the Dave Winfield Humanitarian Award from the Professional Baseball Scouts Foundation.
The speaking program will begin at 6:00 p.m. in the Guidrey Center at Dean College, 99 Main Street, Franklin, MA on September 23, 2014. The program is FREE and open to the public. Registration is required as seating is limited. Click here to register for this event.

Bert Jacobs brings his optimism to Dean

"Optimism Can Take You Anywhere" was the title of the presentation and talk that Bert Jacobs gave at Dean College on Thursday evening. This was the 8th in the series by the Dean Leadership Institute. Dr. Paula Rooney thanked the Robert Kraft and the Kraft Group, last year's speaker for helping to make the connection with the Life is Good founder.

Dean Leadership Institute
Dr Paula Rooney introduction

Bert wasn't going to talk about t-shirts. He was going to talk about how to approach life as an optimist and how that makes a difference. He touted one of the key factors in his own development as having a family dinner. "Half the world's problems would be solved if people sat down regularly to a family dinner." He father had told him he could be part of the problem or part of the solution.

He downplayed the "6:00 news" as really the "6:00 violence report." When you look around there is a whole lot of good in the world. Longevity is up. Wealth is better distributed. There is no active war at this time. Is life perfect, no. But it is not as bad as it is reported to be.

Dean Leadership Institute
Bert Jacobs at Dean College

He touted persistence. he and his brother had five and a half years of bad ideas before they hit upon a good one. The good one being the first smiling face t-shirt who image eventually got the name "Jake." What told him that had hit on a good idea. That they had sold 48 t-shirts in an hour in Cambridge to 48 different people. They recognized they had found their market with "life is good."

They focused on finding an element of life and celebrating it. He told of his first t-shirt shop on Cape Cod. They were next to an ice cream parlor. The owner called him to order more shirts and asked if "Jake" could be eating ice cream? Sure, why not. Another idea came from a store owner in Vermont who wanted Jake riding a mountain bike. Sure, why not.

Some ideas didn't work as well as others. Oddly, they had trouble with Jake in a wheel chair. Folks were not getting the real 'life is good' message. "Takers may eat well, but givers sleep well." "Life can hurt, but play can heal."

life is good
Bert Jacobs at Dean

He told the story of how they developed their Halloween pumpkin celebrations, how they eveloved to focus on sharing their wealth and doing fund raising for kids. Life is Good Playmakers is part of the overall company. He told of their plans to expand their product lines beyond t-shirts. Hallmark is selling life is good cards. Life is good will have coffee come July. He wouldn't reveal their partner in the coffee business.  They are in talks with an auto manufacturer for a Life is good vehicle.

Bert said "authenticity builds business." "The only ones who can build a brand are your customers." Life is good does not do advertising, everything they do is by word of mouth. Satisfied customers telling their friends and spreading the word.

He closed asking the students to find their positive purpose. He said 'life is good' is spreading the power of optimism. He said, "We can't stop the waves, we need to learn to surf."

I met Steve Farber earlier this year and received an advance copy of this book. I don't have it anymore as it went to someone who really wanted to read it. Now with the official version available, I can get a new copy for myself. And help him with this new out reach effort!
