Franklin's Second Annual Fire Hydrant Painting Contest

VOTE FOR YOUR FAVORITES BY LIKING THE PICTURES!!

In August the Department of Public Works announced the Town of Franklin's second annual fire hydrant painting contest. The project was designed to draw attention to the hydrants, promote upkeep and public awareness of the water system and foster engagement with the ultimate goal of encouraging a sense of pride in the infrastructure among residents.

From October 6, 2023 to October 12, 2023 residents can vote for their favorite fire hydrant art on the DPW's  Facebook Post . Winners will be announced at the DPW Touch a Truck event on Saturday October 14, 2023.

Thick Paint Extravaganza Plein Air! - Workshop on June 3, 2023

The Franklin Art Association is sponsoring a plein air landscape acrylic painting workshop with acclaimed artist and instructor Lenny Moskowitz on Saturday, June 3, 2023, from 10 AM to 5 PM. 
The workshop will take place at Charles River & Mine Brook riverside junction in Franklin, 11 Haverstock Road, Franklin (backyard of FAA Vice President Susan Plume).  For more information, see the attached flyer. 
The deadline for signups is May 20, 2023 and the fee is $75.

Reminder: Would you like to paint a Town of Franklin fire hydrant? Registration due Aug 12, 2022

Fire Hydrant Painting Event Rules

The design should be appropriate for a public space and should not be political in nature, or be offensive in any way.

Potential design themes include:
  • Designs inspired by the Historic Places, People and Events in Franklin
  • Designs with a whimsical or humorous twist that will make viewers smile
  • Context-sensitive designs that would uniquely connect a particular fire hydrant with its immediate surroundings
  • Colorful, abstract designs
The public and private space immediately around the fire hydrant should be kept clean and neat when not directly working on the fire hydrant. Please respect the property.

Registration is open until Aug. 12, 2022. Proposed designs must be submitted for approval during this period, along with a completed application. Applicants will be notified by Aug. 19, 2022.

Painting of fire hydrants can begin upon notification of your assigned hydrant and must be completed by Sept. 30, 2022.

Paint only on the assigned fire hydrant. The caps must be able to open after the paint dries. You must provide your own exterior paint or sealant. Nothing can be attached to the fire hydrant.

If words are included in your design, all words must be approved as a part of the design.

You may use stencils, air brush with masking tape, or freehand your design.

You must apply the design submitted in this application. If you desire to make changes, you must seek approval from the Town of Franklin prior to changing your design.

If rules are not followed your hydrant will be painted over.

Judging will take place between Oct. 3 and Oct. 7, 2022. Winners will be announced at the DPW Touch a Truck event on Oct. 15, 2022 for most whimsical, most patriotic, most creative, and judges’ choice.

Any questions should be addressed to: Doug Martin, Town of Franklin Water & Sewer Superintendent at 508-553-5500 or domartin@franklinma.gov.

Town of Franklin will be basing their decision to approve applications for painting based on creativity, originality, imagination, and appropriateness. All decisions on applications are final.

We at the FAA would like to take this moment to remind readers that the pandemic has hit arts non-profits especially hard, and The Franklin Art Association is no exception. After the isolation of the past 2 years, we need art more than ever to remind us of our shared humanity and to bring us together. 

Please consider donating to the Franklin Art Association this Giving Tuesday November 30th, your support will help ensure that we can continue to bring fantastic programing to you and our entire community! 

Donations can be made in person at our Wednesday December 1st meeting or via mail at Franklin Art Association, 279 E. Central St. PMB#289 Franklin MA 02038.  The FAA is a registered non-profit if you would like a receipt for tax purposes you only need ask!

Join us for an adult paint night taught by Toni Carbone.

Toni Carbone is an intuitive artist and a certified creatively fit coach. Toni will take us on a painting journey as she teaches a super easy layering painting process that activates the right side of your brain.

We will paint a mandala which is a sacred ancient symbol that encourages introspection and awareness that allows for peace of mind.

Beer from 67 Degrees Brewing will be served with light appetizers.
All included in your ticket price.

Mandala paintings are colorful geometric patterns with roots in ancient cultures. We will explore the practice of making mandala paintings as a form of intuitive meditation that can restore our body, mind, and heart. Presented on Zoom by Jacqueline Volpe, The Creativity Curator at jbvdesignstudio. Sign up by April 16, 2021. Kits will be provided for the first 12 Franklin residents.
