Meet at the Hockomock Area YMCA for Camp Blast Family Night on Friday, March 30

The Hockomock Area YMCA invites residents in local communities to enjoy a ‘summer-like’ evening filled with fun and the chance to learn what camp is all about at our free Camp Blast Family Night. The event will take place on Friday, March 30th from 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM at our Bernon Family Branch (located at 45 Forge Hill Road, Franklin), at our Foxboro Branch (located at 67 Mechanic Street, Foxboro), and our North Attleboro Branch (located at 300 Elmwood Street, North Attleboro).

Learn why kids have the ‘Best Summer Ever’ when they attend Hockomock Area YMCA summer camps. Our Camp Blast Family Night will include opening and closing Ceremonies, face painting, camp songs, STEM, crafts, active games, raffles and prizes, a bouncy house, and more for all to enjoy. Children will get to participate in and experience Y Camp hands-on. Parents and prospective campers will have the chance to tour our camp facilities, meet camp directors and counselors, ask questions, and try out the many activities our summer camps offer. At Camp Wiggi (Franklin), Camp WAPAWCA (Foxboro), and Camp Elmwood (North Attleboro) children look forward to built-in swim lessons, free swim, sports, STEM, gaga pit, arts and crafts, theatre, nature, games, music, archery, ropes team building, camper’s choice, fun weekly themes, special guests, field trips, and more. Grades 2-5 venture on weekly field trips to new and exciting places such as Launch Trampoline Park, museum of Science, Mystic Aquarium, Spring Lake, Breezy Acres, and so much more. On Wednesdays, special guests will come and visit with the first graders. Some of those visitors may be petting zoos, Frisbee catching dogs, magicians, and musicians.

Camp Blast Family Night  on Friday, March 30

Hockomock Area YMCA traditional camps include STEM programs to help close summer learning gaps between school years. The Hockomock Area YMCA offers 3, 4, and 5 day camp options as well as pre and post care from 7:00-9:00 AM and 4:00-6:00 PM for parents in need.

In the News: Storytime Fiesta at the Library; civics day in Medway

"The library will add a linguistic twist to storytime later this month when students from the Spanish National Honor Society read books and lead activities about Spanish culture. 

The first of the three events will take place on March 31, when there will be singing, dancing, cultural snacks and arts and crafts. The effort is being led by Franklin High School senior and Spanish National Honor Society member Letticia Pierre-Louis. 

She thought it would be a good idea to combine her work at the library with her honor society volunteer requirement to create an event that would benefit and educate the younger generation. 

The Storytime Fiesta isn’t just about learning a bit of Spanish, Pierre-Louis said, it’s about appreciating the culture surrounding the language around the world."

Storytime Fiesta - March 31

"State and local officials described Medway High School’s inaugural Civics Day as a time to begin passing the torch to the leaders of tomorrow. 

Students got a chance to interact with local leaders during the Friday morning event and State Rep. Jeffrey Roy, D-Franklin, gave a speech about the importance of community engagement. 

The event also had a competitive component – a quiz competition to determine who had the best grasp of local issues. 

Teacher Aubrie Rojee, who organized the event, has a passion for civics and wants to teach students about the responsibility of being good citizens in a democracy."

Town Council - Actions Taken - March 14, 2018

The School Committee meeting was canceled this week due to the blizzard and rescheduled for Thursday, March 22. 

The Town Council meeting was held as the storm had cleared. The meeting was shortened as the Legislative update was postponed to a future time.

53 Tri-County Students Receive Adams Scholarship

Fifty-three seniors at Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School qualified to receive the John and Abigail Adams Scholarship for their performance on the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System test.

The John and Abigail Adams Scholarship provides a tuition waiver for up to eight semesters of undergraduate education at a Massachusetts state college or university.

The students were recognized on Thursday, March 15, during a celebratory reception in the school’s library.

The scholarship provides up to eight semesters of free tuition to full-time undergraduate students who attend a Massachusetts state college or university. The scholarship covers tuition only; fees and room and board are not included. The scholarship must be used within six years of a student's high school graduation.

To be eligible, students in the Class of 2018 had to achieve an Advanced score on one of the three high school state assessment tests in ELA, Mathematics or STE, and score at the Proficient level or higher on the two remaining tests. Their combined scores must also place them among the top 25-percent of students in the graduating class within their district.

Tri-County RVTHS, located at 147 Pond Street in Franklin, is a recipient of the High Schools That Work Gold Achievement Award and serves the communities of Franklin, Medfield, Medway, Millis, Norfolk, North Attleboro, Plainville, Seekonk, Sherborn, Walpole, and Wrentham.
