Course offerings include everything from Painting a Wine Bottle Lamp to a Beginner Ceramics class as well as Watercolor, Pastel Art classes and Intermediate Digital Photography.

Yoga, Zumba, a new afternoon Exercise class for Active Older Adults,
and Community Walking.

Beginner Jazz Dance, Country Line Dancing. Men's Basketball, Badminton, Intermediate and Advanced Volleyball classes.

Public Hearing Notice for 87 Grove St - Brownfields Clean up

The Town of Franklin is currently in the process of applying for a $200,000 EPA Brownfield's Cleanup grant, which if received will be utilized to remediate hazardous building materials, demolition of the remaining building, and remediation or removal of contaminated soils.

Franklin Town Council will hold a public hearing concerning the proposed project and related grant proposal during their Tuesday December 8, 2015, 5:30 p.m. meeting. Please find the public hearing notice attached.

TOWN OF FRANKLINPUBLIC HEARING NOTICE

The Franklin Town Council will hold a public hearing on Tuesday December 8, 2015 at its 5:30 p.m. meeting to discuss a proposed Federal FY2016 EPA Brownfields Clean-up Grant Application. Under this grant application, the following activities are currently being considered related to a Town of Franklin owned property (known as the former Nu-Style property) at 87 Grove Street in Franklin Massachusetts: removal of hazardous materials within the vacant 1.5 story former manufacturing facility, demolition of said manufacturing facility, and partial remediation and or disposal of contaminated soil. Any person or organization so wishing will be afforded an opportunity to be heard. The hearing will be held in the Council Chambers of the Municipal Building, 355 East Central Street.

Written comments and suggestions related to the proposed remediation project, the draft grant application, and a related draft Analysis of Brownfields Cleanup Alternatives (ABCC) may be submitted to the Town of Franklin Department of Planning and Community Development (DPCD), 355 East Central Street, Franklin, MA 02038. A copy of the draft grant proposal and related ABCA are available for review at DPCD. Deadline for comments is 1:00 p.m. Friday December 11, 2015.

The Town encourages a broad spectrum of participation by residents and other interested parties in order to better understand and serve the needs of the community. The hearing location is accessible to persons with physical disabilities. If you require a translator or accommodations for the hearing impaired, please contact the DPCD at 508.520.4907 no later than 4:00 p.m. Monday, December 7, 2015.

And, you will be entertained by professional cellist Brent Selby and his student Cello Ensemble. In addition, guitarist Matt Macaulay will perform along with some of his private music students.

In the News: signs of drug abuse, investigation of fire continues

A local group devoted to fighting substance abuse will hold a forum next week on the signs of drug use.

The Support for Addicts and Families by Empowerment (SAFE) coalition will hold the session - intended to help family members identify signs that loved ones are abusing drugs or alcohol - on Tuesday, Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. at Franklin High School.

James Derick, the president of the coalition's board of directors, said the interactive forum will discuss signs, symptoms and solutions.

"We will have packages available, so parents can handle items commonly identified as signs a loved one might be using," he said. "These are things like Q-tips, bent spoons and burnt tinfoil. They're things parents might walk by."

The Massachusetts Fire Marshal's office is still in the midst of investigating the explosion that took the lives of two Franklin residents in October.

Nancy and Richard Brown, both 66, apparently died as the result of the Tuscany Drive blast, which took place shortly before 7 a.m. on Oct. 10.

Jennifer Mieth, a spokeswoman with the fire marshal's office, said the investigation has two components: determining the origin and cause of the explosion and looking into whether there was a violation of state codes.

"We're waiting to have scheduled a forensic investigation of the building's burner and gas log fireplace," she said. "Because the testing could be destructive, we need all the parties to agree and come together."

Looking back to April 2015

Some key events took place in April. The Finance Committee began its series of public hearings on the FY 2016 budget. When the hearings and approvals were completed in May, the Town Council scheduled their own hearings for June.

The Town Council heard about the proposal to move the Recreation Dept from 150 Emmons St (since that building was being sold) to a building on Beaver St. The property at 275 Beaver St was the proposed location. The Town Council approved funding the purchase.
