The week before a concert, particularly a season opening concert, is always full of anticipation at Claflin Hill. Musicians have received the music in the mail and next Tuesday night, they will assemble at Milford Town Hall to begin their rehearsals.  (I'm always so impressed that Paul pulls together concerts of the magnitude of CHSO with just 3 rehearsals; that truly speaks to the caliber of our professional musicians!)  Next Tuesday night is very much like a family reunion. 5 Week Session of Women's FIT Boxing begins Monday, Oct 31

“Pots with Pizzazz” the featured program at a joint meeting of the Franklin, Norfolk and Millis Garden Clubs

“Pots with Pizzazz” will be the featured program at a joint meeting of the Franklin, Norfolk and Millis Garden Clubs on Tuesday, November 1, at the Remington Middle School located on 628 Washington Street, Franklin. The program will begin at 7:00p.m. in the school cafeteria. It is open to the public.

Presenters will be Jana Milbocker and Joan Butler of Holliston-based Enchanted Gardens. The workshop will inspire participants to design jazzy containers that can be the “jewelry” of a garden, elevating it from “good” to “great”! 

Participants will learn how to brighten shady spots with pops of color, create focal points for vistas and welcoming entry gardens with stunning container groupings. Including designs for all seasons, the presenters will show examples of pots ranging from whimsical to grand. They will also provide information on creating unusual, eye-catching pots.

Franklin Garden Club

Butler and Milbocker are avid gardeners, plant collectors, garden designers and writers. They lecture on a variety of gardening topics to garden clubs and community education classes. They have presented programs at the Boston Flower & Garden Show, Tower Hill Botanic Garden, Massachusetts Horticultural Society, and Blithewold, as well as at the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts (GCFM) Landscape Design Council, Judges’ Council and Horticultural Mornings. Both are past presidents of the Holliston Garden Club and are active in the GCFM and other horticultural societies. Currently, they both serve on the board of the Massachusetts Landscape Design Council.

Milbocker is principal of Enchanted Gardens, a landscape design and garden construction firm in Holliston. She has authored gardening articles which have been published nationally and can be found on her website blog. Butler is a horticulturalist at Weston Nurseries. She is a former Chairman of the Massachusetts Landscape Design Council and is a member of Garden Consultants Council and an accredited Flower Show Judge. Currently, she serves on the GCFM Board as Awards Chairman.

"A group of school district officials will be seeking parent feedback on the dress code this weekend. 

The policy subcommittee of the Franklin School Committee is set to meet from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday on the third floor of the town municipal building to discuss the matter. 

Subcommittee Chairwoman Mary Jane Scofield announced the session during the School Committee meeting this week. She said the subcommittee was currently on its fourth draft of the policy, and would likely be seeking a full committee vote on it after Saturday's event."

Big Band Brunch with Kenny Hadley Big Band on Sunday, November 13

THE BLACK BOX, downtown Franklin’s theater, music, and event venue, presents a Big Band Brunch with the renowned Kenny Hadley Big Band on Sunday, November 13. 

The critically-acclaimed 16-piece ensemble, led by drummer Kenny Hadley, boasts masterful musicians with performance ties to Big Band legends Woody Herman, Count Basie, Stan Kenton, Maynard Ferguson, Buddy Rich and more. The Kenny Hadley Big Band has shared the stage with such notables as the Count Basie Orchestra and the Duke Ellington Orchestra and has hosted guest soloists including Clark Terry and Louie Bellson.

– King Philip notched a 25-21, 24-26, 25-13, 25-22 win over Franklin. Sydney Phillips had 17 kills and two blocks, Carly Adams added 21 assists and three kills, Amanda Loewen had seven digs, Emma Lopez chipped in with nine digs and Angela Vellante and Molly Croke combined for 11 digs. For Franklin, Maddie Kuzio had 39 digs, Erin Skidmore and Maggie Doyle each had eight kills and Meaghan Maguire notched six blocks.

– Franklin sophomore goalie Christina Lucini made 14 saves and junior Kate Morse had two saves herself as Franklin clinched the Kelley-Rex title. Franklin head coach Lisa Cropper said Kayla Marshall, Caroline Lounsbury and Dana Lewandowski all had strong defensive games for the Panthers.

In the News: Sec of Energy takes a bike ride; School Committee stands against Question 2

"Local residents, town officials and state legislators lobbied for state support in an unusual way: by going on a bike ride. 

The group guided Matthew Beaton, the Massachusetts Secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs, down the town's portion of the Southern New England Trunkline Trail (SNETT) Wednesday afternoon. Their aim was to garner support for a tunnel beneath Prospect Street, which would connect the trail to a wider network of bike paths. 

State Rep. Jeffrey Roy, D-Franklin, said the group was hoping to convince Beaton to bring its concerns to Gov. Charlie Baker. 

"It's a nice trail all the way, until you get to Prospect Street," he said, estimating that the intersection was about 1.25 miles from the trail's Grove Street entrance. "There, it's a steep climb up - you can't ride it."

"Citing the town's key role in American public education, the School Committee took a position against a charter-school ballot question in the November election. 

The committee at its meeting Tuesday night voted unanimously against Question 2, a ballot measure that would lift the cap on charter schools in the state. 

Several of those who spoke on the matter mentioned that Franklin is the birthplace of Horace Mann, regarded as the father of public education in the U.S., and that they believed the referendum, if passed, would go against the principles he supported. 

Committee member Anne Bergen said she believed the measure would create schools that were not subject to public oversight."

FPAC presents "The Odd Couple"

Franklin Performing Arts Company (FPAC) presents Neil Simon’s hilarious The Odd Couple on November 4 and 5 at 7:30 p.m., with a Sunday matinee on November 6 at 2:00. Directed by Aaron Andrade, FPAC’s production will be staged at THE BLACK BOX in downtown Franklin as part of the company’s 26th season.

A classic American comedy by one of the most produced playwrights of the twentieth century, The Odd Couple is an epic mismatch of personalities, as an incompatible pair of suddenly single pals becomes roommates. Thrown out by his wife, the fastidious and uptight news writer, Felix Unger, moves in with the slovenly sportswriter, Oscar Madison, recently divorced. Unsure why their marriages fell apart, the friends repeat the same mistakes with each other – with hysterical results. The Odd Couple won the 1965 Tony Award for Best Author of a Play and was a Best Play nominee. The renowned buddy tale is the original play behind the hit TV sitcom and film.

In the News: Math update to School Committee; Tri-County shows off robotics progress

"Math educators from the town's schools said instruction in the district has shifted to encourage activity and problem solving, but School Committee members expressed concern about communication with parents and the standards set. 

Math specialists and instructors spoke at the committee meeting Tuesday night as part of a general overview on the curriculum and instruction in the district. 

Assistant Superintendent Joyce Edwards said the district's curriculum has been changed to align with state standards. 

"It involves the construction of knowledge - not just passively sitting and being talked at," she said.

"It may have looked like play, but the robotic arm demonstration was really a glimpse at manufacturing's present and future. 

Students Andrew Plante and Candis Brodeur were showcasing the Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School's new robotic arm, using it to build a tower with assorted blocks Tuesday. 

"We're just starting now on this - trying to play around with it and learn how it works," Plante said, adding that the arm had just arrived last week. 

Brodeur said the school already had a smaller robotic arm, which introduced students to the basic concepts of programming robotics.

Pantherbook: "FHS Sound Record Department Receives Ableton Grant"

Riley Halliday, Writer for the Franklin High School "Pantherbook" writes about the grant received for the Sound Record Department.

"It’s no secret the FHS has an outstanding resources for its sound recording department, however things just got a little more interesting. 

Mr. O’Connors, the new sound recording teacher, has already made an impact in his first months here. He recently applied for a grant from Ableton, a music software company. This Wednesday, sound recording classes and the music production club received fantastic news which included 15 new Ableton Push boards, as well as Ableton Live software.

– Franklin picked up the sweep on the road to earn its 12th win of the season. Maddie Kuzio paced the Panthers with 28 digs and four aces while Maggie Doyle added five digs and three blocks and Erin Skidmore had nine kills and eight digs.

– Caroline Lounsbury scored the game-winner four minutes into the game while Cassi Ronan, Erin Walsh and Annie Walsh each scored once. In the News: bag bylaw sent to subcommittee; Dao to perform at All-National Honor Ensembles

"The Town Council has opted to send a proposed plastic bag ban to its economic development subcommittee after some local residents and businesses raised objections to the measure. 

The ban - which would affect single-use plastic shopping bags - had been before the council for a first reading at its meeting last week. A group of Franklin High School students had proposed the bylaw last month, citing the impact the bags have on the environment. 

Councilor Andrew Bissanti, who leads the economic development group, said a number of people had contacted the town after the law was proposed. 

"In between meetings, there was a firestorm of controversy - a lot of merchants complained," he said. "Big Y (supermarket) said they were not notified... there was significant opposition."

"Matthew Dao, a student at Franklin High School, has been selected as a member of the 2016 National Association for Music Education All-National Honor Ensembles. 

Dao will join more than 670 of the most musically talented and skilled high school students in the United States to perform at a gala concert on Nov. 13 in Grapevine, Texas, at the Gaylord Texan Resort Hotel. 

The young musician will be led under the baton of William LaRue Jones, director of orchestral studies at the University of Iowa. 

Dao will play trumpet in the National Association for Music Education Symphony Orchestra. The high school musician is a member of the Franklin High School Wind Ensemble, Pep Band, Jazz Band and Symphony Orchestra, and a member of the Tri-M Music Honors Society."
