"Though the building behind the recreation department’s Beaver Street headquarters is filled with tools, lumber and scissor lifts, it will be home to goals and basketball hoops before long.
The town is hoping to open the building this summer, finishing work on the department’s complex.
Department Director Ryan Jette said the purpose of the space is to add onto the programs his department is able to offer.
“Right now, the recreation department’s main gymnasium use is in the Franklin Public Schools,” he said. “We use their gyms for things like recreational basketball. We have 1,300 kids in recreational basketball - we could never house the program here - but we could augment what we have.”

– The Panthers dominated the second half, scoring six goals while shutting out the Rebels. “The defense was overall very solid and played as a team,” said FHS head coach Kristen Igoe Guarino. Alex Field had three draw controls, four ground balls and two caused turnovers while Gianna Cameron recorded 10 saves in net. Annie Walsh netted a hat trick on the offensive end while Kendall Reardon and Kelsey MacCallum each scored twice. Jordan Jette and Erin Walsh each had two assists.
"The Franklin High boys baseball team used a late two-out rally to force extra innings and eventually walked off with a 4-3 win over previously unbeaten Walpole.
Trailing 3-0 heading into the final at-bats, the Panthers were down to their last out. Senior Jake Lyons came through with a single into left, and Ryan Hodgkins followed that up with a single of his own. Tyler Gomes drew a walk, and with the bases loaded and two outs, Josh Macchi singled up the middle to score both Lyons and Hodgkins. With runners at the corners, Bryan Woelfel singled home Gomes to tie the game up at 3-3. After a passed ball, Franklin had runners at second and third, but Walpole managed to get a strikeout to send the game to extra innings.
“Our guys really fought to the end,” said Franklin head coach Zach Brown. “We’ve been kind of scuffling a bit offensively, and it just felt like there was going to be a time where we broke through, and thankfully today it was in the seventh.”

"The town removed the equipment at the popular DelCarte playground this week, with hopes of replacing it shortly.
Local officials announced in early March that they would be removing the playground equipment at the 136-acre DelCarte Recreation & Conservation Area because of continued integrity problems with the fiberglass-reinforced structure.
Recreation Director Ryan Jette said the contractor, GameTime, completed the equipment removal on Wednesday, and completed excavations in preparation for installing the new playground."
Work to remove the troubled unit was underway when the photo was captured this past weekend |

"The town’s legislative delegation last week warned local officials that state tax revenue is falling short of expectations.
Local legislators - state senators Richard Ross, R-Wrentham, and Karen Spilka, D-Ashland, and state Rep. Jeffrey Roy, D-Franklin - gave an update on the budget process at a Town Council meeting.
Spilka, chairwoman of the Senate Ways and Means Committee, said revenue projections had called for a 4.3 percent increase. She said, though, that weaker-than-expected returns began in February, a trend that continued into March and has resulted in collections $220 million below the benchmark.
According to Spilka, a similar downturn last year began in April and eventually required $750 million in budget cuts. She said she hoped such cuts will not be needed this year."
"Town councilors have adopted a new bylaw on water restrictions but chose not to craft the measure to include private well owners.
The Town Council, at its most recent meeting, passed a new ban bylaw that town officials said would more effectively describe current practices. While the previous bylaw defined the terms of the ban and the punishments for violation, the amendment includes different levels of conservation, more thoroughly talks about the terms used and delineates the precise activities prohibited during a ban.
The measure passed by unanimous vote.
Among the changes in the new bylaw is a requirement that those who use private wells to water their lawns display a sign to that effect. Falsely posting such a sign is prohibited and homeowners may be subject to a penalty."
