FHS Volleyball takes D1 Central-West Sectional Title for First Time

Josh Perry, the Managing Editor of HockomockSports.com, provides the game recap for the FHS volleyball win in the D1 Central-West Sectional.

"During a dominant regular season, Franklin was not pushed to five sets even once. In fact, the Panthers had only dropped three sets overall heading into the state tournament. 

In three postseason games, Franklin has gone to five sets all three times and has won all three of them. 

That pattern held again in the Div. 1 Central/West final on Saturday evening at Wellesley High. Franklin cruised through the first two sets, demonstrating why the Panthers are still unbeaten, but then Shrewsbury rallied to win two straight and force a decisive final set. Franklin jumped out early to win the fifth set 15-5 and secure the program’s first-ever sectional title. 

“You just have to work harder than the girls on the other side of the net, just want it, and I think it showed in the fifth set that they wanted it,” said first-year Franklin coach Kelsey Weymouth. “I’m beyond proud.”

These all contributed to the unique role Massachusetts played in World War I, which ended 100 years ago on Sunday. 

World War I, also known as the Great War, is often overshadowed by other historic wars. It was shorter, claimed fewer lives and the United States involvement was less extreme compared to other war efforts. 

The end of World War I was once known as “Armistice Day,” which was observed each year on Nov. 11. That changed, however, in the 1950s when President Dwight Eisenhower decided the day should include the recognition of World War II veterans, giving it the name still used today - Veterans Day."

Today's Veterans Day ceremony will begin at 1:30 PM on the Town Common and be followed by a reception at the Senior Center. 

Parking around the Town Common should be reserved for the older veterans. Parking at Horace Mann and the High School is also a short walk away. Parking alternatives can be found at the Charter School and the Public Library (closed today).

"Victoria Almeida knew she wanted a dedicated spot for her grandson, Tristan, to pay his respects to his dad whenever he felt the need. 

Ryan Trant, Tristan’s father, was 24 when he died in September 2017 after accidentally overdosing on fentanyl - an opioid known to be 80 to 100 times stronger than morphine, according to the United States Drug Enforcement Agency. 

“Ryan was cremated, so I didn’t have a place,” Almeida said. 

After months of fundraising and working with the Our Lady of Fatima Shrine in Holliston and Trant’s girlfriend, Mikaela DeMaria, Almeida was able to make that wish a reality."

"The Zoning Board of Appeals currently consists of three (3) members and one (1) associate members appointed by the Town Administrator, subject to the confirmation by the Town Council, for terms of such length and so arranged that the term of one member shall expire each year. There is currently one (1) opening for associate member. 

The Board holds Public Hearings for variance requests, special permits (including gravel removal) and Chapter 40B applications. The Board also makes determinations on land use and zoning issues. All necessary forms and applications may be obtained through the Building Inspection Department and via Board of Appeals website. The Zoning Board of Appeals meets in Town Council Chambers at the Franklin Municipal Building on Thursday evenings usually twice a month."

Franklin Cultural District Partnership Meeting - November 15, 7:15 PM

Dear Cultural District Partners,

The Cultural District Committee would like to remind you about our upcoming quarterly partnership meeting. The meeting will be next Thursday, November 15th, 7:15 PM at the Franklin TV and Radio Station, 23 Hutchinson Street.

Our meeting will begin with a short tour of the Franklin TV and radio facilities. During the meeting we will provide an update on the status of our Cultural District application, share a quick overview of our goals and marketing strategies, and will conclude with a brainstorming session regarding potential cross partnership activities for the future. 

We look forward to everyone's input and continuing our work together to promote the arts and the economic growth of downtown Franklin.

Opioid Awareness Education and NARCAN® coming to Library and YMCA

"Every public library and YMCA in the U.S. may soon be equipped with Narcan, in an effort to combat drug-related deaths by expanding access to the opioid-overdose-reversing naloxone nasal spray. 

Emergent BioSolutions, which this month completed its acquisition of Narcan maker Adapt Pharma, will provide a free kit including two doses of the nasal spray, as well as educational materials, to each of the 16,568 public libraries and 2,700 YMCAs in the U.S., according to an announcement released Wednesday. 

The initiative builds on the Narcan in Schools program, through which the company offers four free doses of Narcan to each U.S. high school, and up to eight doses to degree-granting two- or four-year institutions."

Tri-County Freshman and Franklin resident, Will Doggett in the news

Tri-County Freshman and Franklin resident, Will Doggett, was featured on the CBS local news Thursday night. Will is going to be participating in his fourth Fenway Park Spartan Sprint tomorrow. Will is also a member of the TC Cross Country team.

"Fourteen year old Will Doggett trains in his Franklin backyard. Whether it’s running laps or hoisting himself up a tree on a rope, Will vows to be ready for his 4th Fenway Park Spartan Sprint on Saturday. 

“It’s basically an obstacle course. There are walls you have to climb over. There’s a spear throw, and there’s plenty of burpees you have to do,” he explains."

Franklin Historical Museum: 100th Anniversary of the end of WW I

This month marks the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. Many men from Franklin fought, not all made it home. 

The Franklin Historical Museum display honors those men, and features one in particular, Edward Leslie Grant.

• Saturdays 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM; 
• Sundays 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM 
• and Thursday evenings 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM (except Nov, Dec, Jan, and Feb).

“Anyone can become a victim”

"Police are taking steps to end violent crimes against women by offering a free rape defense course to the public. 

Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) is a training course hosted by police departments to help women learn defensive moves and gain confidence in the face of danger. 

The next RAD training session will take place next week, though sign-ups for the event closed on Friday afternoon. Another session is planned for the spring. 

Officer Tara Lagoa has been training women in the course for a few years. She said she’s seen first-hand how it can improve a woman’s confidence."

This is a meeting of the Franklin Town Council Sub-Committee; under the Open Meeting Law, this subcommittee is a separate "public body" from the Town Council. Therefore, unless the Town Council has separately noticed and posted its own meeting, Councilors who are not members of this subcommittee will not be permitted to speak or otherwise actively participate in this meeting, although they may attend and observe. This prohibition is necessary to avoid the potential for an Open Meeting Law Violation.

Section 1 - Appointment and qualifications

4-1-1
The Town Council, by a majority vote of its full membership, shall appoint a Town Administrator who shall administer and implement the directives and policies adopted by the Town Council. The Council shall fix the Administrator's compensation within the limits of an appropriation adopted for that purpose. The salary, benefits, and terms and conditions of employment and the procedures for dismissal shall be negotiated between the Town Council and the Administrator.

4-1-2
In seeking candidates for the Administrator's post, the Town Council shall advertise in appropriate professional journals and other suitable publications as deemed necessary. The Town Administrator need not be a resident of the town at the time of appointment but shall establish residence within the town within one year following appointment, unless the town council shall waive such residency requirement. If a resident of the Town, the successful candidate shall have held no elective town office for a period of one year prior to appointment.

4-1-3
The Administrator shall be appointed on the basis of educational, executive and administrative qualifications and experience, including at least a bachelor's degree in an appropriate field of study from an accredited four-year college or university. Professional experience shall consist of at least three (3) years of full-time, compensated service in town or town administration or related administrative activity.

Field Hockey - D1 South = #13 Franklin, 3 vs. #1 Walpole, 4 – Final (OT)

"Cassi Ronan picked up the ball inside the 30-yard-line and pushed the ball forward. She weaved her way past a pair of defenders and then touched it past a third to get clear on goal. The Walpole defender eventually caught up to Ronan, but not before she carried the ball nearly 70 yards. 

The defender managed to slow her down but a foul was called, giving the Franklin senior a penalty stroke. She buried the shot, giving the goalie no chance and giving the Panthers a 3-1 lead over the No. 1 seed with just nine minutes remaining in Thursday night’s Div. 1 South semifinal at Taunton’s Tiger Aleixo Stadium. 

It seemed like the Panthers, seeded 13th in the tournament, were finally going to end Walpole’s dominance in the rivalry and do it on the biggest stage. But, instead, the goal seemed to wake the Porkers up and they came storming back into the game. 

Walpole scored twice in the closing minutes, including a goal with just two minutes left, to force overtime and then added a game-winner eight minutes later to stun Franklin 4-3 and advance to the South final."
