Maeve Ledwith – Franklin – Defense
Franklin junior Maeve Ledwith built on a strong sophomore season to become one of the top defensive players in the league this year and help Franklin come back from a slow start to the season to make a run to the Div. 1 South semifinal. Ledwith’s speed and ability on the ball make her tough to beat and helped the Panthers escape pressure. Franklin coach Michelle Hess said, “Maeve is a tenacious and fierce defender who uses her speed and stick skills to the best of her ability. Maeve is a talented defender who sees the field and does an excellent job of flying on corners where she breaks up many shot attempts from opposing players.”

Franklin senior Cassi Ronan was once again one of the top players in the Hockomock League and the engine in the heart of the midfield that drove the Panthers to second place in the Kelley-Rex division. Ronan scored 14 goals and had 13 assists this season and finished her four-year varsity career with 82 points. Franklin coach Michelle Hess said, “Cassi plays the most difficult position on the field. Cassi’s stick skills are impressive and her drive and shots on goal are by far some of the hardest I have ever seen a high school player take. Cassi is a two-year captain who leads by example. Cassi will be missed a lot next year!”

Amanda Lewandowski – Franklin – Forward
Franklin sophomore Amanda Lewandowski emerged as one of the Panthers top scoring threats this season and someone who can rise to the big occasion. Lewandowski scored 13 goals and had 13 assists this season to be on the league’s top scorers, but she also came through in the clutch, with five of her goals coming in the tournament. Franklin coach Michelle Hess said, “Amanda is a rising star. Her aggressive and impressive stick skills and her ability to find the net or dish to a teammate make her a scoring threat each and every time she has the ball…Other teams have a hard time shutting her down.”

"After struggling to find help, the Department of Public Works is offering new incentives for candidates to plow streets this winter. 

Last week, the Town Council agreed to offer additional cash bonuses to hire about 30 more contractors with snow removal machinery before the winter weather sets in this year. 

Contractors who are already signed up have been given an extra $1,000. In addition, they’ve also been offered a $500 bonus for each piece of equipment that stays in commission until the end of the season. 

“Say that you have eight pieces (of equipment), that’s four grand at the end of the year,” said DPW Director Robert “Brutus” Cantoreggi. 

In addition, the DPW is also offering $500 to current contractors who successfully recruit others onto the Franklin force."

Chris Herren to speak in Medway - Dec 11

"Medway area parents and guardians are invited to hear former Celtics player Chris Herren of Fall River, who will share his inspirational - and painful - journey back from addiction to alcohol and drugs in the hopes of preventing others from making the same mistakes.

Back by popular demand, Herren's parent program has proven to be inspiring and powerful to Medway area parents and guardians. His tale of descent into addiction and a miraculous recovery is as powerful as his new life's mission: to share his story with audiences in the hopes of reaching at least one person and making a difference in their life.

At Medway High during school hours, students will watch a moving video chronicling the pro athlete's rise to fame and subsequent fall to substance abuse, and participate in an engaging talkback with Herren to share their views. This evening program is geared toward parents to explore the same topic. One objective of Mr. Herren's presentation is to have students not to begin using substances and how easily substance use can escalate. In this parent talk, he inspires while presenting the negative impact of drug and alcohol use, the reality of addiction, and how some students engage in self-injurious behaviors.

Parents will also be moved by this discussion on what we can do to help our teens be true to themselves and resist the need to turn to dangerous and destructive behaviors, and ways to support those who may be facing personal challenges.

The negative effects that drug and alcohol use can have on an individual and their loved ones is an important responsibility that we share with our families and the community. Please attend this free event and help spread the word.

"When Democrats Maria Robinson and Becca Rausch were in the throes of campaigning for a seat in the Massachusetts legislature, they took a pledge – if elected, they would work to achieve greater transparency in state government. 

Both were victorious in last month’s state election - Robinson, of Framingham, is headed to the House, where she will represent the 6th Middlesex District. Rausch, of Needham, will serve in the Senate representing the Norfolk, Bristol and Middlesex District. 

That means the pledge lives on, and at its heart is a demand that every vote at the Statehouse be done by roll call. It gives constituents a clear picture of how their elected officials vote and where they stand on the issues."

"The Town Council voted unanimously last week to negotiate with Deputy Town Administrator Jamie Hellen to take over for Town Administrator Jeff Nutting who retires before next summer. 

“I honestly look forward to coming to work every single day,” Hellen said during the Nov. 28 council meeting. “I want to thank the tremendous, dedicated staff we have here in Franklin, on both the town and school side, for their hard work in making this an organization second to none.” 

Hellen will soon enter into negotiations with the nine-member Town Council on a contract. 

In a letter to the council in September, Nutting announced he would be retiring no later than June 30. He recommended Hellen to replace him."

In the News: PEDC presents The Nutcracker; advances in cancer seen

"With the explosive growth of the arts in the Franklin community, Patti Eisenhauer Dance Center is preparing to present "The Nutcracker" with three performances this weekend. 

Performances are on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 1:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 9 at 12:30 p.m. at Bellingham High School, 60 Blackstone St., Bellingham. 

PEDC has cast six girls as Clara, for the first time having three younger dancers portray young Clara and three older dancers portray mature Clara. Each set of dancers will perform for one show. 

Dancing the lead roles in the production are Samantha Robillard, Kaitlyn Auerbach and Andrea Gray as the Snow Queen; Bridgette Ginley, Elizabeth Rodriques and Emily Conroy as the Dew Drop Fairy and Isabella Lambros, Kaitlin Broyles and Alanna Huling as the Sugar Plum Fairy."

"The winners of this year’s Nobel Prize for Medicine say they expect substantial advances toward treating cancer in the next several decades, although it is unlikely the disease could be eradicated. 

James Allison of the United States and Tasuku Honjo of Japan made the assessments at a Thursday news conference ahead of receiving the 9 million-kronor ($999,000) prize. 

They were named winners of the prize in October for their work in immunotherapy — activating the body’s natural defense system to fight tumors. 

“Soon we’ll get close with some cancers,” Allison said, citing progress against some forms including melanoma. But, he said, “the world will never be cancer-free.”

The 400-mile rail system, linking Boston to places as far-flung as Lowell, Worcester, Plymouth, and Providence, has for generations hauled suburbanites to work in the morning and home at night, with only occasional service outside rush hour. But activists believe it could support far more robust service, bringing something like the subway to dozens of cities and towns in Greater Boston — and taking thousands of cars off the highway."
