FHS girls basketball tops Carlsbad (CA); Coach Leighton gets 300th win

Via HockomockSports.com and Twitter, we share the results of the fall sports competition for Franklin High School on Wednesday, December 28, 2022. We also provide the link to the full set of Hockomock League results below.

Boys Hockey = Franklin, 1 vs. St. Mary’s, 2 – Final
Franklin drops a tough one, 2-1 to a very good St Mary’s of Lynn in the Christie Serino Tournament. https://twitter.com/FHS_PuckCoach/status/1608290685043589120
Game Results: Franklin 1 St Marys 2 (Shots Franklin 29 St Marys 21)
1st - 3rd period Recap:
From the drop of the puck boys were buzzing. However, Franklin's l't and only goal came 3 minutes into the game when Anthony Lampasona slides the puck to Dan Daley coming through the neutral zone who then walks 2 defenders to dish it to Ban Paterson who snips it bar down to go up 1-0. There was constant pressure and a flurry of shots in the game from Ben Jarosz, Ryan Sicchio and Dylan McEvoy. And Tommy Balducci, Carter Balducci, Jack Wernig, and Patrick Daley applied a great forecheck resulting in some quality opportunities as well. However, the main theme was St Mary's goalie Anthony Palmer time and time again keeping St Mary's in the game with some amazing goaltending.
Defensively, Logan Marchand and Vinnie Pasquarosa had some big shots from the point accompanied by several nice hits. While Aidan Kuykendall, Liam O'Rielly and Carmine Iannuzzi provided a heavy dose of defense. In the pipes Colby Wagner had a solid game seeing 211shots.
Overall good puck distribution and unselfishness, few things to work on but things are coming together well. There is a very well-balanced chemistry amongst these players it is fun to watch.
Lastly, a tip of the cap to St Mary's goalie Anthony Palmer, no question he was the difference maker. St Mary's best team we've played yet, solid club.
Franklin takes East Greenwich on Sunday night 1/1 in Franklin for the Home Opener puck drops @7PM.

Girls Basketball = Franklin, 70 vs. Carlsbad (Calif.), 54 – Final
– Franklin had five players score in double figures and dominated on the glass to overcome 32 points from Carlsbad star Madison Huhn and pick up a non-league win and hand head coach John Leighton his 300th career victory. The Panthers jumped out to a quick start, scoring 21 points in the first and building an 11-point lead. Huhn, who is committed to Miami (Ohio), caught fire in the second, with 18 of her team’s 21 points to cut the lead down to five at the break. After a nearly even third quarter, the Panthers exploded for 21 points in the fourth to break things open and seal the win. Katie Peterson was the top scorer for the Panthers with 21 points, including seven in the first and eight in the third quarter. Sophomore Chloe Fales added 13 points, knocking down three from beyond the arc, including a pair of triples in the fourth to help Franklin pull away. Bridget Leo scored 11 points, six of them in the first, and Lizzie Newman and Caelyn Leonard each added 10 points.

Ryan Martin has his first article for the Boston Globe reporting on the game

COVID-19 Misinformation & New variants

"Nearly three years into the pandemic, Covid-19 remains stubbornly persistent. So, too, does misinformation about the virus.

As Covid cases, hospitalizations and deaths rise in parts of the country, myths and misleading narratives continue to evolve and spread, exasperating overburdened doctors and evading content moderators.

What began in 2020 as rumors that cast doubt on the existence or seriousness of Covid quickly evolved into often outlandish claims about dangerous technology lurking in masks and the supposed miracle cures from unproven drugs, like ivermectin. Last year’s vaccine rollout fueled another wave of unfounded alarm. Now, in addition to all the claims still being bandied about, there are conspiracy theories about the long-term effects of the treatments, researchers say."

"A new coronavirus variant named XBB has swiftly become the dominant form of COVID-19 spreading in the Northeast, jumping from about 35 percent of cases during the week ending Dec. 17 to just over half last week, according to CDC data.

The rapid spread indicates that the XBB variant is more adept than its predecessors at evading the immunity that comes from vaccines and infections.

“It looks like it’s just going to blow the other ones away in a very short period,” said Dr. Jeremy Luban, professor of molecular medicine, biochemistry, and molecular biotechnology at UMass Chan Medical School. “The most likely explanation is that it’s more transmissible.”

But significantly, Luban said, there is no reason to think that XBB causes more severe disease than other variants."

"Game Results: Franklin 7 Malden Catholic 2 (Shots Franklin 33 Malden Catholic 27)   https://twitter.com/FHSPantherHocke/status/1607950911191629824
1st period Recap:
Boys came out with a hard forecheck setting the tone early as usual. The first 8 minutes of the game a lot of back-and-forth up tempo play until at 8:10 left in the first Franklin takes a penalty resulting in a penalty shot. But Colby Wagner would come up huge and stones the shot for Malden Catholic firing up Franklin. A minute later Tommy Balducci wins a neutral zone faceoff and finds Carter Baldacci who takes off down ice for the snipe from the top of the circle.  Franklin's relentless hard pressure from Ben Jarosz and Dylan McEvoy would continue all period. And with 3:13 Left in the period Dan Daley would find Ben Paterson who then slides it to Anthony Lampasona in the slot and puts it home. Franklin would end the period up 2-0
2nd Period Recap:

Franklin would start the period fending off the last .38 seconds of a penalty. After successfully killing off the penalty Franklin goes on the attack again however with 12:17 left in the second Malden Catholic finds the back of the net. And with the game 2-1 in favor of Franklin, Franklin buckles down with some hard defensive shifts from Liam O'Rielly and Aidan Kuykendall. With 8:11 left in the second Logan Marchand snaps a pass to Ben Paterson below the net, Ben Paterson makes a no look pass to Dan Daley who buries it. A minute later carter Balducci takes off on a 2 on 1 then slides it to Jack Wernig who buries it for his first varsity goal to make it 4-1 Franklin. As play would ensue Franklin would find the next yet again on a PP goal when Vinnie Pasquarosa finds Dan Daley who bumps it to Anthony Lampasona for his second of the night. Couple in a hard shift from Zack Langevin, Mike Gates, Pat Daley,nd Carmine Iannuzzi that would finish off the period. Colby Wagner had another strong period in net fending off 17 shots thus far. Franklin up 5-1
3rd Period Recap:

Malden Catholic would find the net in the first .20 seconds of the 3rd off a shot from the blue line. And just went Malden Catholic gained some momentum a minute later Ben Paterson would find Logan Marchand, who unloads one from the point that finds the back of the net deflating the sail of Malden Catholic. A few minutes later Franklin would find themselves on the PK when Ben Jarosz applies the heavy forecheck separating the defenseman from the puck and hits Ryan Sicchio for the one time in the slot for the shorty. With about 3:45 to go in the game Sam Jette, Mike Gates and Nick Weber would bring some heavy hitting play and strong defense by carmine Iannuzzi and James Donovan causing much frustration to Malden Catholic. Franklin would wrap it up with a 7-2 win and player of the game would go to Carter Balducci. Solid team win hopefully giving Franklin a much-deserved boost in the power rankings.
