Elderly are targets of scammers, be aware!

"My 78-year-old mother-in-law handed an envelope containing $25,000 cash to a Florida Lyft driver who showed up one morning on her doorstep during the early days of the pandemic.

The cash was intended to bail out her beloved nephew from jail, where he sat after crashing into a pregnant woman and killing her. Or so my mother-in-law was told by the man on the phone who pretended to be her nephew’s lawyer. The man instructed her to tell no one or he would rot in jail. On two consecutive days, she made large cash withdrawals at her bank and the “lawyer” sent the Lyft driver to collect the loot.

But there was no accident and no jail stint. My mother-in-law, reacting with her heart and not her head, was too scared to call her nephew or other family members to verify the tale. Days later, she mentioned to my husband that she had bailed the nephew out of jail — with no idea that she had been scammed.

That was my family’s introduction to the pernicious crimes that strip senior citizens of their money and dignity. It also served as a wake-up call for my husband. He drafted a strategy to better protect her, which included overseeing her finances."

This session of the radio show shares the Franklin Public Schools Redistricting Advisory Committee Meeting held in hybrid format with folks at the FHS Media Center on Tuesday, February 7, 2023 as well as some members who participated remotely.

Given this was a working session, the major whole group sections of the meeting audio is what is shared here. There is one break in the audio when the breakout discussion was held at each table. The audio for the table breakout is replaced by a brief music interlude.

Quick Recap

  • Review of the objectives and timeline

  • Presentation on 3 options depicted in a new “storymap”

  • Feedback discussed at each table and to be collected via survey form for the committee

  • Next steps - public forums scheduled for Mar 7 and Mar 13 with survey form to collect feedback. Both sessions will present same material; one in person, one via remote

  • Next advisory meeting Mar 21 to prepare for School Committee presentation scheduled for Apr 25 and School Committee vote scheduled for May 9

The edited meeting audio recording runs about 72 minutes. Let’s listen to whole group discussion position of Redistricting Advisory Committee Meeting of Feb 7

The FHS girls hockey, girls basketball, and boys basketball teams all post wins on Tuesday

Via HockomockSports.com and Twitter, we share the results of the winter sports competition for Franklin High School on Tuesday, February 7, 2023. We also provide the link to the full set of Hockomock League results below.

Boys Basketball = Franklin, 75 @ Taunton, 50 – Final
– Taunton didn’t have an answer for Franklin’s Sean O’Leary as the junior erupted for a career-high 35 points to lead the Panthers to a win on the road. The win clinches the Kelley-Rex division title for Franklin, the first since 2016. O’Leary hit 16 shots from the floor — 14 from two-point range and a pair of threes — and had just one free throw to finish with 35 points. He scored nine in the first, 11 in the second, six in the third, and nine more in the fourth quarter. Franklin increased its lead throughout the game leading 11-8 after one and 32-24 at halftime. An 18-point third quarter extended the lead and Franklin closed strong with 25 points in the fourth. Justin Allen hit four threes and finished with 14 points to go along with 13 rebounds, and Andrew O’Neill added 11 points for the Panthers. Troy Santos led Taunton with 16 points, Chris Perault added 15 points, and Jakari Innocent finished with 11 points.

Girls Basketball = Taunton, 32 @ Franklin, 57 – Final
– Caelyn Leonard scored a career-high 21 points and Franklin turned up its defensive pressure over the final three quarters to earn the big win and stay one game in front of Attleboro in the Kelley-Rex title race. The game was tied at 13 apiece after the first quarter. Leonard got off to a quick start, scoring seven points, while Cali Melo paced the Tigers with five points over the first eight minutes. Franklin broke things open in the second, outscoring Taunton 19-7. In the third, the Panthers were even tougher on defense, holding Taunton to just four points. Leonard came up big again, scoring eight of Franklin’s 16 in the quarter, as they made it a 24-point lead heading to the fourth. Lizzie Newman scored 10 points and Katie Peterson had eight for the Panthers. Melo led Taunton with eight, while Chelsea Bousquet and Tarynn Campbell each scored seven.

Town of Franklin - School Recreation Facilities and Parks (ADA Compliance Included) - 2023 OSRP Update

Happy Tuesday All,

It's that time again - another OSRP focus group meeting!

As a recap, the FCC held a meeting about "Municipal Recreation Facilities and Parks (ADA Compliance Included)" on January 26. In case you missed it, the recording of this meeting can be found here. Have ideas and suggestions for the Town about municipal recreation facilities and parks? All feedback, comments, and suggestions can be submitted through this Google Form at any point throughout the OSRP process; so it's definitely encouraged to utilize this platform to communicate your thoughts. Responses are routinely checked and we have been connecting with many residents about their feedback. We'd love to connect with you, too!

Upcoming Events

February 9 Focus Group

The next OSRP focus group meeting (Topic: School Recreation Facilities and Parks (ADA Compliance Included) is this upcoming Thursday, February 9 from 6-7pm in Council Chambers at Town Hall. Can't attend this Thursday? Not a problem! A separate OSRP Office Hour meeting is available this Friday, February 10 from 10-11a in Room 326A at Town Hall. You are encouraged to attend either (or both!) meetings, ask questions, and provide feedback on your thoughts and ideas about School Recreation Facilities and Parks (ADA Compliance Included).
