Pantherbook: "Then to Now – A Day in the Life of an FHS Student, 1992 vs. 2023"

"31 years ago today, students at Franklin High would be starting off their school day at 6:55 a.m. Classes spanned from 45-50 minutes where the standardized classes like math, english, science and social studies (history) took place.

Although the four core subjects are still taught today, electives were quite different back then. Students could take classes like Home Economics where they learned to cook, typing lessons with typewriters, sewing classes, woodworking classes, graphic arts where they could make t-shirts, and automotive classes. Electives were very hands-on and students were able to learn skills that could be applied in everyday life. Many of the things the class of 1992 learned in electives would no longer be taught today, such as typing, which is now a basic skill that all students know.

Dismissal was at 1:55 p.m. and after school, students could participate in clubs, sports, or even school council. The business club,  DECA, was popular and still is, even 31 years later. "

FHS girls tennis, softball and baseball teams post wins on Monday

Via HockomockSports.com and Twitter, we share the results of the spring sports competition for Franklin High School on Monday, April 3, 2023. We also provide the link to the full set of Hockomock League results below.

Baseball = Franklin, 11 @ Oliver Ames, 1 – Final (6 inn.)
– Franklin senior Alfred Mucciarone dazzled on the mound on the road at Frothingham Park, leading the Panthers to a win over Oliver Ames. Mucciarone tossed five shutout innings, allowing just one run (unearned) on two hits, striking out 10 without issuing a walk. Offensively, Franklin wasted little time to get the bats going as they pushed across four runs in the first and scored in each of the next five innings. Jase Lyons (RBI, two runs) and Eisig Chin (RBI, two runs, two stolen bases) each had three hits to pace Franklin’s 16-hit performance. Henry Digiorgio and Tyler Bellan (two RBI) each had two hits while Ben Jarosz notched two RBI.

Softball = Oliver Ames, 7 @ Franklin, 8 – Final
– A back-and-forth battle ended with a walk-off single from Franklin’s Avery Chalk to hand the Panthers a thrilling season-opening win at home. The teams combined for 12 runs in the first three innings, trading the lead each inning before the Tigers plated two in the top of the fifth to make it all even again. Freshman Sophia Sacramone retired the Tigers in order in the top of the seventh, and in the bottom half, Dana Stott laced a one-out double into left field. An error advanced Stott to third, and a fielder’s choice loaded the bases. Chalk singled to left field to bring in the game-winning run. Chalk, Sarah Boozang (RBI, run), and Katy Liberman (two RBI, run) each had three hits as the Panthers totaled 18 as a team. Sacramone got the win in relief, allowing two runs on five hits with six strikeouts in four innings of work. OA’S Devon Morris (one RBI, two runs) and Katie Melendy (three RBI, run) each collected three hits while Katherine Farley (RBI) and Crystyliah Covel (two stolen bases) each had two hits. Maddie Homer had a strong defensive game for OA with six putouts and a double play.

Boys Tennis = Oliver Ames, 3 @ Franklin, 2 – Final
– Oliver Ames won all three singles matches to return home from Franklin with a victory via a 3-2 decision. After splitting the first two sets, OA junior Nike Westerbeke prevailed in the third set to secure the match (6-2, 0-6, 6-3) at first singles. Sophomore Alex Efremidas took a tight second singles match in straight sets (6-4, 7-5), and sophomore Pat Dolan completed the singles sweep with a 6-3, 6-2 third singles win. In doubles action, Franklin junior Ahan Shetty and senior Eric Tomaino earned a 6-0, 6-4 first doubles victory while the team of junior Andrew Amante and sophomore Aaron Ramaswamy picked up a 6-3, 6-3 win at second doubles.

Girls Tennis = Franklin, 4 @ Oliver Ames, 1 – Final
– Franklin swept both doubles matches and took two more victories in singles action to open the season with a 4-1 win on the road over Oliver Ames. Franklin’s Brooke Taylor prevailed from a hard-fought first set to take a 7-5, 6-1 win at second singles while Chloe Essam dropped just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 third singles victory for the Panthers. The team of Brooke Daniels and Sydney Tolonen grabbed a 6-3, 6-3 win at first doubles while Shriya Rajesh and Isabelle Simino picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win at second doubles. OA sophomore Hannah Farber opened her campaign in impressive fashion, taking a 6-2, 6-2 win at first singles.

Softball: Ten Players to Watch for 2023 -> FHS' Fales

HockomockSports.com has published the "Softball: Ten Players to Watch for 2023". The Franklin selections are shared here. The link to the complete listing is provided below.

HAILEY FALES, SENIOR – FRANKLIN
Franklin is a team flying under the radar as the new season kicks off, but the Panthers have the potential to make their mark in the Kelley-Rex. Fales will be one of the players that new coach Breana Shafer will count on this spring. The senior catcher batted 0.406 last year, knocking in nine runs and stealing three bases. She has great discipline at the plate, striking out only five times all year. Fales was also a leader of the team, working with the Franklin pitchers, calling the game, and being a steadying influence from behind the plate. Her reliability and consistency in the heart of Franklin’s lineup will be critical this year, as the Panthers navigate a division loaded with some of the best talent in the state.

Franklin Police Dept announce new partnership with METRO-LEC Mounted Unit

The Franklin Police Department is excited to announce a new partnership and unit with the Metropolitan Law Enforcement Council (METRO-LEC), the mounted unit. METRO-LEC is a consortium of more than 46 local police and sheriff departments in the south metropolitan Boston area which covers 600 square miles and has a corresponding residential population of 850,000 people.

The Council currently operates several divisions:
  • Canine Unit (K9)
  • Child Abduction Response Team (CART)
  • Computer Crime Unit (CCU)
  • Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT)
  • Criminal Investigation Division (CID)
  • Mobile Operations Motorcycle Unit (MOP)
  • Regional Response Team (RRT)
  • Special Weapons & Tactics (SWAT)
  • Marine Unit
We currently have members assigned to the METRO SWAT, Crisis Negation, Search and Rescue, and K-9 units. Two officers have been selected will attend training at the nationally accredited Mounted Police Training Academy located in Louisville, Kentucky. They will join 10 other officers from METRO-LEC departments. This unit will be utilized across the state including community policing events, large crowd gatherings, search and rescue calls, concerts, etc.

It is impossible for every community to be fully trained and equipped for every possible contingency. Therefore, local communities have banded together to create organizations, such as METRO-LEC, to help each other thus making us all safer in the end. The member communities acknowledge that certain critical incidents call for a law enforcement response that may exceed the capabilities of any one single agency. METRO-LEC was designed for these types of incidents. The Mounted Unit will be based out of a farm in Millis once operational.

The FPD/METRO-LEC will not be the only Massachusetts law enforcement agency utilizing mounted units. The Massachusetts State Police and Worcester Police Department utilize a mounted unit. Like years past, this post is simply a case study to see who might not read this entire post. It should go without saying this is an April fools post. We are absolutely not getting a mounted unit although it would be pretty cool if we did. Now I’m going to add some additional text to hide this message even more. Franklin Police Chief Thomas Lynch currently serves as the Treasurer of METRO-LEC. Franklin has utilized METRO-LEC for a number of critical incidents and search and rescue operations. We’re looking forward to seeing everyone on horse back!
