HockomockSports.com boys soccer preview of 2023 season - FHS

FRANKLIN
2022 Record: 16-4-1 (Kelley-Rex division champions)
Head Coach: Fran Bositis

With over a dozen experienced returners back this season, the reigning Kelley-Rex champions have a good chance of making it two in a row, and maybe even more.

Hall of Fame coach Fran Bositis has 13 players back who played a significant role on last year’s team that won 16 games and its first Kelley-Rex division title since the program won four in a row from 2011-2014. With the talent on the roster this year, it’s possible we see another run of success atop the division. There’s experience all over the field but maybe none more than senior center back Rex Cinelli, a standout defender who has anchored Franklin’s defense for the past couple of seasons. Senior Andrew O’Neill had a strong junior season up front (four goals, six assists), an area of the field the Panthers could be very dangerous with fellow senior Hansy Jacques (seven goals, two assists) back and the return of senior Sean O’Leary, who was a target forward as a sophomore but took last season off.

Senior Noah Cain is a confident and skilled player back in the middle of the pitch again this year. Seniors Bradley Herndon, Gustavo Martinez, and Michael Fernandez-Martin all offer good speed on the wings and can create a lot of offense going forward. Juniors Wyatt Herndon, Matt Honekamp, and Garrett Scagliarini (four goals, four assists) all earned valuable minutes a year ago and should be impact players as Franklin tries to repeat as division champs. In net, seniors Paxton Rosen and Jack Perlman — who both saw some time last year due to injuries — have had a healthy battle in net and should both be involved in the lineup this year.

“I feel the strength of our team without question will be our senior leadership and our athleticism,” Bositis said. “We have a solid group of athletes and we are all excited about the upcoming season.”

HockomockSports.com preview of Kelly-Rex Div football for 2023 season - FHS

FRANKLIN
2022 Record: 7-3 (Kelley-Rex division co-champions)
2022 Finish: Reached Div. 1 State Quarterfinals
Coach: Eian Bain

Key/Returning Players: Derek Dubriske, Sr., WR/DB; Brendan Larivee, Sr., FS; Jack Nutter, Sr., MLB; Michael Davide, Sr., RB/LB; Cody Howard, Sr., OLB; Ben Ryan, Sr., OL/DL; Brandon Large, Sr., OL/DL; Jermaine Flecha, Sr., SS; Julian Rampino, Jr., DE; Jack Murphy, Jr., OL/DL;

Outlook:
For the second straight year, Franklin graduated a talented group of seniors but coming off back-to-back Kelley-Rex division titles, expectations are still high for head coach Eian Bain and the rest of the Panthers.

Franklin will mostly be an inexperienced group to start the season but the Panthers do possess some key players in key spots all throughout the lineup. Having those veteran presence on the field will be very important as the Panthers turn to sophomore James Bruso will look to take over as the starting quarterback in Week 1 at Wachusett. There will be a familiar face in the backfield as senior Michael Davide will carry the load in the run game, and he’s got some strength to run behind. Senior Ben Ryan is back at tackle, senior Brandon Large returns at guard, and junior Jack Murphy steps in at center to bolster the run game for Davide and protection for Bruso.

Franklin has had some of the best receivers in the league the last couple of seasons like Luke Davis and Shane Kindred, and the next man up could be senior Derek Dubriske. Coming off a strong junior season playing mostly in the slot, Dubriske gives the Panthers a reliable go-to option they can count on. There’s some good talent on the defensive side of the ball as well, with returners Brendan Larivee, Jack Nutter, and Cody Howard back in the mix. Larivee will anchor the secondary alongside senior Jermaine Flecha, Nutter and Howard headline the linebackers group, and junior Julian Rampino is a name to keep an eye on along the defensive line.

“We need to stay focused on the process and less on the results to find success,” Bain said.

The Wonderful World of Wine (WWW) Episode 245: Wine Stories and Wine In Glass (audio)

The Wonderful World of Wine (WWW) Episode 245

Exploring all things wine with you!

In this episode Kim and Mark talk about Wine Stories and Wine In Glass.

First we discuss "Wine stories".

They can refer to a wide range of narratives associated with wine, including historical anecdotes, tales about famous winemakers, and the cultural significance of wine in various societies. From the legendary origins of wine in ancient civilizations to the stories behind specific bottles or vineyards, the world of wine is rich with captivating stories that explore its creation, appreciation, and impact on human culture.

Then we talk about reasons Wine is sold in glass bottles.

Wine is often stored in glass bottles for several reasons:
1. Preservation:
2. Inert Material:
3. Protection from Light:
4. Aesthetics: Glass bottles
5. Tradition and Perception:
6. Recyclability:

However, it’s worth noting that while glass is the most common material for wine bottles, there are other packaging options available, such as bag-in-box, Tetra Paks, and even cans. These alternatives can offer convenience, cost savings, and reduced environmental impact, but they may not provide the same level of protection and aging potential as glass bottles for certain types of wines intended for long-term cellaring.

Cheers
Kim and Mark

Save the Date: Meet the Candidates Event Tuesday, Oct 17, at the Elks

Please SAVE THE DATE for a Meet the Candidates Event October 17, Sponsored by Franklin Observer

The Franklin Observer is planning a social evening and "debate" for candidates and the public on Tuesday, October 17 from approximately 6 PM to 10 PM at the Franklin Elks, 1077 Pond Street.

The event, which will feature complimentary light foods with drinks available for purchase at the bar, will open with an informal meet-and-greet for candidates and attendees. That will be followed by a more formal program for competitive races, with breaks for socializing.

"We are excited to organize this event at the welcoming facility of the Elks," said Franklin Observer editor, Alan Earls. "In the past, these events have been anything but social and we hope to change that and give voters a chance to really get to know the candidates and the issues and enjoy a genuinely fun night out with other residents," he continued.

To defray room costs, attendees are encouraged, but not required, to make a suggested donation of $5 per person.

Many details are still in development so expect further communications...Franklin TV has been invited and will likely be present.

Best Regards,

Alan

Hockomock League: FHS players to watch for Girls Soccer & Volleyball

Hockomock Girls Soccer: Players to Watch in 2023

ANYA ZUB, SENIOR – FRANKLIN
One of the league’s top attacking talents for the past two seasons, scoring 33 goals combined, Zub enters her senior year with the chance to win her fourth league title and the goal of making a deep tournament run. Zub is dynamic with the ball at her feet, using her low center of gravity to make quick cuts past defenders, her strength to shield the ball from the opposition, and her creativity in the final third to find ways to score even against a packed opposition penalty area. Zub can play through the middle, holding play up or stretching the back line with runs into the channel, can drop deep to pull defenders away from the box and open space, or use her speed on the wing. Her interchanging with junior winger Kelly O’Connor (10 goals in 2022) keeps defenses guessing for the full 80 minutes. Franklin has edged the league title for the past three seasons and with Zub returning up top the Panthers remain the team to beat in the Kelley-Rex, while pushing to go further than last year’s Sweet Sixteen run.

Hockomock Volleyball: Players to Watch in 2023

MAKAYLA KUYKENDALL, SOPHOMORE – FRANKLIN
Franklin is in the midst of a five-year reign as Kelley-Rex division champions, sharing the title with at least one other team in the past four years. It seems like the Panthers graduate important all stars every year but somehow find a way to reload. This year, in an effort to go for a sixth straight crown, the Panthers have both of their all stars back including sophomore Makayala Kuykendall. Kuykendall made an immediate impact as a freshman, a six-rotation player who showed right away she could play everywhere on the court. As a freshman, she was top 10 in the league in kills (188), was a strong server, and was a reliable defensive option in the back row. The Panthers have high expectations this season and the firepower they have at the net gives them a good chance to exceed them.

TAYLOR LACERDA, SENIOR – FRANKLIN
Lacerda emerged last season as a leader for Franklin, helping the Panthers split with rivals King Philip and Attleboro and win a piece of a fifth straight league title. She was an all-around performer on a balanced team, leading the Panthers in kills with 195 and digs with 198, while finishing third on the team in aces and receptions. When Franklin needed big points in big matches, invariably it was Lacerda who would deliver them. Lacerda could be counted on for accuracy and consistency on the outside and for providing a lift whenever her team needed it. Not someone who needed every set to go her way, Lacerda could go a few points without a swing and then deliver the big swing in the big moment to turn momentum Franklin’s way. If the Panthers are going to make it six titles in a row, Lacerda, a three-year starter, will be right there in the mix on all the important points again.
