"School officials are preparing to take a look at whether the Davis Thayer Elementary School in the town center should be closed.

The School Committee voted unanimously on Tuesday to authorize the district to hire an outside consultant who will study whether it would make sense to shutter the school. Superintendent Sara Ahern made the recommendation to members, pointing to the building’s age and design and the district’s decreasing student population.

“This is more than just a building. This is community - this is an emotional experience,” said Chairwoman Anne Bergen, who once served as Davis Thayer’s principal. “We need to be inclusive in this process and hear from everyone.”

Ahern said a consultant could help the district understand the demographic projections in terms of population, mobility and movement around town. She said she currently does not know how much the consultant would cost, but will return to the board with an estimate."
