Now official. Your final school rankings from the South sectional girls swimming and diving championship. Franklin (@FHSSports) rallies to win it all with 226.5 points, snapping Duxbury’s streak of seven consecutive titles in the event. BostonHeraldHS

Franklin (@FHSSports) HC Jessica Pridham: “Those eight girls over there have been through so much together…only six girls qualified to swim in this meet today. And six girls from Franklin, Massachusetts just won their first South sectional meet...(1/3)
…I’ve been coaching in Franklin for 10 years-plus, and we’ve never finished higher than fifth...(2/3)
To watch them swim for their lives, swim their hearts out for that relay that it all came down to, and to bring it all together & have them win something they have never done before was watching beauty.”  @BostonHeraldHS

Boston Globe: "Think cheerleaders aren’t athletes? Think again, say those at the state championship"

"The vibe at the Massachusetts School Administrators Association Winter Cheerleading State Championship is spirited, and the music is pulsating.

Where else do you get 800 high school student-athletes on 54 teams doing thousands of pyramids and tumbles and not hear a single boo from the large crowds?

If you’re looking for pom-poms, you won’t find any here at Worcester State University.

Although cheerleading is not officially a sport in Massachusetts schools, there’s no doubt that these are bona fide athletes. The days of cheerleaders being thought of as just pretty faces rooting on the boys’ teams are long over."

Recap: School Committee hears about the FHS program of studies, approves senior perks, and trip to Nationals for FHS Cheerleaders

Quick recap:
  • School Committee hears about modifications to the FHS Program of Studies for the 2022-2023 School Year, what the modifications are and how they were developed from feedback and recognition of changes in students and needs
  • Note the presentation doc previously released for this meeting was not the one used in the meeting, some pages had split out to multiple pages. Screen captures show the updated copy
  • Approval for FHS senior perks and for the FHS cheerleading team to travel to National competition was granted. The team cheered so loudly outside the building after they left the Council Chambers, it briefly interrupted the proceedings inside. A happy moment to recognize the accomplishments for this group
  • A new program for COVID-19 testing using "at-home FDA-approved rapid antigen test" kits. The test/stay process and contact tracing will stop with the introduction of these kits provided by DESE.
  • The School Committee entered Executive Session and did not return to open meeting to continue discussions on negotiations

Photos captured during the meeting can be found in one album  https://photos.app.goo.gl/MXrJDo8M5A2c4tu96

Audio of the meeting should be available in a couple of days

My notes captured via Twitter during the meeting are summarized in the following PDF doc. This new tool also includes the photos shared inline with the tweet notes.  https://drive.google.com/file/d/1M3AcnmYaJV8IAr9sUGLmKvYsaEo8mPrs/view?usp=sharing

Pantherbook: "Franklin Panthers Won't Be Stopped: Cheer Wins Hockomock League Championship" (video)

"Franklin Panthers Won't Be Stopped: Cheer Wins Hockomock League Championship"
"Cheerleading competitions: massive gatherings of teams from all over, with crowds of parents and supporters packed into stands to watch the cheerleader’s routines. Of course, because of coronavirus restrictions, cheer competitions looked a lot different this year.

Although the cheer team typically competes in the Fall and Winter seasons, the MIAA changed the timeframe to be Fall II and Spring. In a regular season, the FHS team would compete in several invitational competitions before heading to Hockomocks (then, if all goes well, Regionals and States). This season, there was only one competition: Hockomocks.

After being denied a chance to compete for the Division I state championship when COVID struck last March, many members of the team were crushed, but they were eager to get back on the mat and prove themselves."

MA State News: Cheerleader hotspot with link to Franklin; travel order downgraded, MA cases stalling (not dropping); Franklin's cases increasing

"37 people infected in COVID-19 cluster at Weymouth cheerleading training facility"
"Thirty-seven participants at a youth cheerleading training facility in Weymouth have been infected with the coronavirus, the Weymouth Health Department said Thursday.

The total includes only the participants, not others such as parents or other contacts, because that is still being investigated, the department said.

Of the 37 infected, four are from Weymouth. Others come from Braintree, Rockland, Randolph, Quincy, Brookline, East Bridgewater, Hingham, Kingston, Marion, Franklin, Whitman, Dedham, and Easton, the department said."

"Massachusetts’ COVID-19 travel order will be downgraded to an advisory on Monday"
"Governor Charlie Baker’s office said the state’s travel order will be downgraded to a less onerous advisory on Monday, the same day Massachusetts moves to Phase 4, Step 1 of its economic reopening.

The announcement came in a statement Thursday."

"As some states see a COVID surge, Mass. cases stall at an ‘unacceptably high’ level"

"Massachusetts is entering spring on a hopeful note. The state earlier this week released its plan to open vaccination eligibility to all adults on April 19, and a few sunny, warm days have begun to coax residents out of their homes and winter coats.

But beneath the air of optimism lies a problem, epidemiologists caution: COVID-19 cases, after declining sharply in early February, have plateaued at an average of 1,500 per day, and the threat of another surge remains."
