Franklin Civics Forum: How Your Town Government Works - Sep 25

Join us on Wednesday, September 25, for a free, non-partisan “Franklin Civics Forum: How Your Town Government Works.”

Did you snooze through your Civics course in high school? Did you even get a Civics course in high school? It’s not too late. 

Six current members of Franklin’s town government will speak about their areas of expertise:

• Tom Mercer, chair of the Town Council, will provide an initial overview of the town government—its parts, their interrelationships, their purposes and personalities. He will also moderate the forum.
• Melanie Hamblin, a member of the Town Council, will speak from the point of view of Franklin’s legislature.
• Anne Bergen, chair of Franklin’s School Committee, and Sara Ahern, Superintendent of Schools, will discuss education, the largest single part of the town budget.
• Joe Halligan sits on the Planning Board. He will speak on the Board's role in the town’s development, zoning, land use, and the like.
• Jamie Hellen is the Town Administrator. He will close the forum by explaining how his office oversees the day-to-day implementation of town government.

A question-and-answer period will follow. Refreshments will be served. 

Admission is free and open to all.

This is a non-partisan event sponsored by the Franklin Democratic Town Committee.

BLACK BOX Blues presents Sonya Ray Taylor! Sonya is part of the new breed of blues and soul musicians, always searching for new ways to revitalize the form. A triple threat, Sonya is a fiery guitar slinger, soulful blues belter, and a songwriter of depth and craft beyond her years. 

She is joined by her husband Ryan Taylor to form a powerful guitar duo. The couple has logged many miles in their young careers, from Boston to Austin then Nashville, where Sonya was signed by BMG Chrysalis. 

The two have worked with or shared stage with artists ranging from Austin queen of soul, Tameca Jones, Gary Clark Jr, John Popper of Blues Traveler, John Medeski, and Derrico Watson of the Victor Wooten Band and have made TV appearances on shows such as the the ABC series "Nashville". 

They are two of the finest young guitar players in the scene today and continue to provide audiences with high energy and soulful performances up and down the east coast and beyond.

Aerial Drones to inspect

Licensed Eversource contractor, Pinnacl X, will be using aerial drones to inspect electric transmission lines in Franklin beginning August 21, 2019 through August 26, 2019. Eversource regularly uses drones for routine infrastructure inspections to help improve the reliability of service to customers while reducing environmental impacts and costs.


- Inspections will occur within the Right of Way (ROW) between Bent St, Lincoln St, Pond St, and the Charles River.

Pinnacl X, our contractor, utilizes certified and licensed drone operators who are specially trained by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to perform inspection work. As always, Eversource ensures that contractors abide by all federal, state and local requirements. They also always carry proper identification.

Franklin Residents: Public Health Advisory - Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE)

"The Massachusetts Department of Public Health has announced a second human case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) in a person from the Town of Grafton in Middlesex County. The first human case occurred in an individual from Rochester in Plymouth County.

The threat level for EEE virus is critically elevated throughout much of Bristol and Plymouth Counties, and well as in some communities in Middlesex and Worcester Counties. EEE has also been isolated in the towns of Bourne and Falmouth in Barnstable County on Cape Cod.

Although EEE virus has not been isolated in Franklin at this time, the virus has been found in several towns in Norfolk County. As such, it is vital that residents take all steps necessary to avoid mosquito bites, whether at home or when visiting communities with elevated EEE risk northwest or southeast of Franklin. The threat is expected to remain elevated until the first hard frost of the year, which typically occurs in October. All residents are strongly urged to follow the recommendations listed below to protect themselves and their loved ones from illness caused by mosquitoes.

Apply Insect Repellent When Outdoors: Use a repellent with DEET, Permethrin, picardin or oil of lemon eucalyptus according to the instructions on the product labels. Remember not to use products with DEET on infants under two months of age. DEET products in concentrations above 30% should not be used on older children. Oil of eucalyptus should not be used on children under three years of age.

Be Aware of Peak Mosquito Hours: Mosquitoes are most active between the hours from dusk to dawn. Limit your exposure out of doors during this peak biting time if possible. If you must be outside, wearing long-sleeves, long pants and socks will help keep mosquitos away from your skin.

Drain Standing Water on Your Property: Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing or stagnant water. Drain birdbaths, flower pots, buckets and children’s wading pools frequently.

Additional public health advisories/alerts regarding EEE will be provided by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the Franklin Health Department as the situation warrants.

"Papa Gino’s will donate its last day of East Central Street sales to the Franklin Food Pantry"

"Papa Gino’s will close its East Central Street store at the end of the day on Sunday, but the Village Shopping Center spot will remain open.

All employees at the East Central Street store have been offered a transfer to either Franklin Village or a location nearby, according to Nicole Mazzarella, a spokeswoman for the brand.

The company is calling the move a consolidation to “more efficiently utilize our resources,” according to a press release.

“This decision has nothing to do with company performance; in fact, our sales - locally and overall - have been stronger and guest visits higher than they have been in years. The Franklin restaurant closing is rooted only in efficiency through consolidation,” said Tom Sterrett, president and COO, in a statement."
