FSPA to Offer New Songwriting Class

Franklin School for the Performing Arts (FSPA) is excited to announce a new class offering this year. New faculty member Cordelia Tapping will introduce a Songwriting course to the school. The class will focus on the process of songwriting by exploring each of its elements in depth: lyrics, melody, harmony, rhythm, and the ways they create emotional impact. Part of each class will be devoted to listening to and discussing songs from a variety of different genres and artists. 

Students will be encouraged to bring in material, whether it be a song they love, a poem that speaks to them, or something they have written or are in the process of writing that they would like to workshop.

Cordelia Tapping

Cordelia Tapping holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Performance from New England Conservatory. She is a singer and songwriter who has performed throughout the U.S. including at the Off the Hook Arts Festival in Colorado, Jazz Central Studios in Minneapolis, Rockwood Music Hall in New York, the Celebrity Series in Boston, and in NEC’s Jordan Hall as backup for Lake Street Dive and as a soloist with the NEC Jazz Orchestra. At NEC, Cordelia taught songwriting workshops through the Community Performances and Partnerships department.

FHS golf team posts win on Tuesday

Golf = Oliver Ames, 167 @ Franklin, 161 – Final
– Franklin junior Jack Paterson earned medalist honors, carding a low round of 38 to lead the Panthers to a tight win over Oliver Ames. Brian Sandham added a 40 and Sean Connolly shot a 41 for the Panthers. Tate Hadges led Oliver Ames with a team-low round of 40.

Girls soccer = King Philip, 1 @ Franklin, 0 – Final

"The Franklin girls soccer team put on a nearly flawless defensive performance against visiting King Philip on Tuesday afternoon.

But the potent Warriors’ offense only needs one chance to punish teams.

Such was the case at Pisini Field as senior Chloe Layne scored inside the opening 10 minutes, the 100th point of her career, and the Warriors walked away with a hard-earned 1-0 decision over the Panthers.

While King Philip’s lone goal came early, the Warriors had chances throughout the game that were either thwarted by the Panthers’ defense or denied by senior goalie Bre Atwood."

With a big town election looming, local civically minded residents are gearing up to host a program aimed at giving people an insider’s look at town government.

The “How Your Town Government Works” program is set for Wednesday, Sept. 25, 7-8:30 p.m., at THE BLACK BOX, 15. W. Central St., Franklin.

While sponsored by the Franklin Democratic Town Committee (FDTC), the organizers are quick to point out the program is completely non-partisan and non-political; rather, they describe it as a public service program.

Members of the committee include Chairman Karen Landers, Herb and Paula Gross, and Colin and Sue Cass.

“We were one of several subcommittees set up by the FDTC to plan activities for the year. The idea for this forum came from Paula, who has lived in Franklin for a few years and realized that she knew very little about Franklin’s government,” said committee member Sue Cass. “We agreed that this lack of information was probably shared by many residents and, since this is an election year, we thought an educational forum about the government would be timely.”
